Chapter 3: Did He Really Love Her?

For three years since they engaged, everyone thought Alexander was head over heels for Ava. He'd come home early every day, ignored other women, and folks praised Ava for keeping him in line.

Even Scarlett, the former chairwoman of SK Group, said, "Ava's got Alexander wrapped around her finger. He seems calm, but he's actually pretty obsessive. I was worried he'd never get over that other woman, but now everything's fine."

Back then, Ava's heart ached hearing that. She knew the truth: he didn't love her. He felt responsible for her, maybe had a bit of affection from growing up together, but his self-discipline was all for the woman overseas.

He didn't love her, not one bit.

Ava finished the last sip of milk, even though it made her feel sick. She drank it for the baby. Soon, she'd be on her own and needed to be strong for her child.

She stood up, pulled out her chair, and felt dizzy. As she got up too quickly, she stumbled and almost hit the table corner. Instinctively, she protected her belly, falling to her knees in pain. Just as she was about to get up, a pair of strong hands lifted her.

Ava thought it was inappropriate for two people discussing divorce to be so close. She tried to break free from Alexander's arms.

Feeling her struggle, Alexander tightened his grip and carried her back to the bedroom, placing her on the bed. He carefully checked her for any injuries.

After confirming she was fine, he scolded her, "You're an adult. Can't you watch where you're going?"

He adjusted her clothes, his hand brushing against her belly, making her heart skip a beat. She quickly pushed his hand away. Even though she was only a few weeks pregnant and her belly was still flat, she felt a wave of guilt, afraid he would find out about the pregnancy.

They were getting divorced; she didn't want to use the child to bind him. She didn't want her child to be resented for being an obstacle between Alexander and his first love.

Alexander, surprised by her sudden push, asked, "What's wrong? Is it because we're getting divorced that you don't want me to touch you?"

"It's nothing. You're overthinking it. I didn't sleep well, and I'm in a bad mood," Ava replied indifferently.

Alexander could tell she was lying. Sensing something was off, he reached to lift her shirt, but she pushed his hand away again.

"Ava, what's going on? Tell me the truth, or I'll call a doctor."

Ava smirked. "It's been a while since we had sex, and I'm about to start my period. You know how it is."

Alexander, looking embarrassed, said, "You have painful periods. I'll have the maid make you some warm water every day. The painkillers are in the second drawer of the nightstand. Take them if it gets too bad."

Hearing his words, Ava felt a pang of sadness. He had just mentioned divorce, yet now he was so caring. What was wrong with him? Why could he talk about divorce so casually and still be so gentle with her, while she couldn’t get over it as smoothly?

"Mr. Mitchell, if there's nothing else, you can leave now. I need to rest," Ava said, turning her back to him.

"Mr. Mitchell? Is that how you call me now?" Alexander was clearly angered by the formal address, his tone rising.
