Chapter 5: Did Ava Only Love Money?

Ava got herself ready and headed downstairs, only to find Felix Robinson, Alexander's right-hand man, already lounging on the sofa. She walked up to him and said, "Felix, you're here."

Felix looked at Ava, surprised. He had expected her to be a mess after Alexander asked for a divorce.

Seeing Felix's stunned expression, Ava didn't get it. She just wanted to get this over with. "Give me the papers. I'll sign them right now."

Felix hesitated for a moment, then pulled the documents out of his bag and handed them to her. He couldn't help but remember a time when he and Alexander were drinking at a bar. Alexander, drunk out of his mind, had mumbled something about Ava. Thinking about it now, Felix figured Ava must have someone else she loved; otherwise, she wouldn't be so indifferent.

Felix felt bad for Alexander. Alexander clearly had feelings for her.

"Mrs. Mitchell, the divorce agreement states that after the divorce, you will receive..." Out of professional courtesy, Felix patiently explained each clause of the contract to Ava, worried she might not fully understand. After all, Alexander was giving her a lot: a villa, a car, money, jewelry, gold.

But Ava didn't hear any of it.

Alexander was indeed generous to his ex-wife, but she wanted nothing except his love.

Could she have it? Could he give it?

She remembered when Scarlett insisted they marry, he had said he had someone else in his heart and that they would divorce when the time was right. Her heart felt like it was being cut with a knife when she heard it, but she knew that if she refused to marry him, Scarlett would blame Alexander and wouldn't let it go. Scarlett might even get sick from the anger. So, despite the pain, she had nodded in agreement.

That's how they got married—helplessly and absurdly. After the wedding, he was indeed so kind and gentle that she almost forgot their marriage was just an illusion and the person in his heart was always his first love abroad.

Their marriage was just a shield. In his heart, she was always just a sister. After their divorce, he would be with his first love again. Everything was for that woman. He only felt responsible for her.

She remembered she said at that time, "No problem. I only see you as my brother, not a lover. If you want a divorce, let me know anytime. I won't cling to you."

Thinking about it now, she found it laughable. Extreme sadness was probably the reason she laughed out loud.

Felix was a bit shocked.

She was about to get divorced, but she was this happy?

"Sorry," Ava said, stopping her laughter when she saw Felix's confused expression, "After the divorce, I'll be a rich woman."

Felix was silent.

So, did Ava only love money?

"Mrs. Mitchell, I haven't finished reading it yet. According to the rules, I have to read the whole thing. Please wait a moment." Felix continued reading, but when he got to the next part, he suddenly said, "Oh no. You can't sign this agreement."

Felix closed the divorce papers, put them back in his bag, and hurried to the door.

Ava quickly followed and blocked his way. "Why?"
