Chapter 6: She Tells Him About the Pregnancy

Before Felix could say anything, Ava's phone rang. The caller ID read "Honey," and a wave of anger washed over her. Damn it! Why hadn't she changed that name?

She answered, "Hello?"

"You didn't reply to my text today," Alexander's voice was sharp, almost accusing.

Ava felt her own irritation rising. She was waiting for Felix to come over and sign the divorce papers. What did Alexander expect her to say? Did he think signing divorce papers was like submitting a work report? Did everything need to be accounted for and every matter responded to?

Was he really in such a rush to divorce her that he couldn't wait for Felix's original documents and needed her to report it personally?

"What do you want me to reply? Felix is here. Once I sign, he'll hand the documents over to you." She paused, then added, "Felix just said the contract can't be signed right now. Once you sort out the details, bring me the new one, and I'll sign it immediately. No need to worry."

She didn't want him thinking she was dragging things out on purpose.

"I know," Alexander said, "The divorce agreement needs some adjustments. There are issues with the property paperwork, so it might take a few more days. But those properties will still be yours. Once everything is sorted, you won't have any future troubles with them."

Ava felt a pang of sadness. Should she be grateful for his sense of responsibility, ensuring she wouldn't be left with nothing after the divorce? Or should she be sad that he thought she only cared about money?

"Are you happy we're getting divorced?" Alexander asked. "Felix said he rarely sees you this happy."

Felix, ever the diligent assistant, must have been updating Alexander on the signing process in real time. Even though it was his job, Felix still glanced at Ava guiltily, wishing he should have left before the call came.

"Why aren't you saying anything?" Alexander pressed.

Even though his voice was calm, Ava felt he was being aggressive.

"Alexander, how could I not be happy getting so much money from the divorce? I didn't expect you to be so generous," she said, trying to come up with some reason.

Alexander continued, "If there's anything else you want—work, a house, jewelry, anything—just let me know. Besides money, I don't have much else to offer. We were married for a year, and I can't let you leave empty-handed."

Ava listened silently to his voice on the other end of the line. She looked down at her belly, and a sudden surge of strength welled up inside her. She could try a little harder; Alexander should know about the baby.

"Where are you now?" Ava asked.

Alexander didn't have time to answer. Ava heard a sweet female voice on the other end of the line. "Alexander... Alexander, aren't you done yet? I've been waiting for you in bed for a long time."

All of Ava's thoughts exploded into chaos, leaving her mind blank.

Felix stood there, stunned and clearly at a loss. How did he end up in this situation? It was incredibly awkward.
