Chapter 3 Be My Secretary

Ophelia's legs were trembling, and she didn't dare to look up at all.

All she wanted was to turn around and flee away.

She thought, 'Please! Can someone come to get me out of here?'

'Gosh!'

'I'm done for.'

'Finnegan has recognized me, hasn't he?'

Utterly nervous, she started at Finnegan's shiny leather shoes. As he stepped forward, she instinctively stepped back.

Smelling her faint scent of mint, Finnegan couldn't help but come closer to her. Meanwhile, the memory from last night came back to him.

It was a fascinating, joyful memory.

Suddenly, Finnegan reached for her chest. Startled, she looked up abruptly, put her hands over her chest, and glared at him with a wary look in her eyes. "Mr. Abbott..."

Though she was stammering, she looked like a bristling wildcat with her claws out, ready to bite if Finnegan took another step closer.

Finnegan sized her up from head to toe. Her heavy bangs and black-framed glasses obscured most of her face, and her jeans and shirt were the utmost old-fashioned, not to mention that she had a cheap hair tie on her wrist.

His first impression of her was that she was old-fashioned.

He didn't recognize that Ophelia was the woman last, and the faint sense of familiarity vanished completely the second he saw her.

He pointed to the badge on Ophelia's chest, his expression icy. "Ophelia? An intern? Which school did you graduate from? How long have you worked here?"

Ophelia didn't know why he asked her all those questions. She instinctively answered, "I graduated from Stargate University and have been here for three months."

"Stargate University?" Finnegan seemed to recall something. Then he instructed Atticus beside him, "Have her report to the secretarial department."

Atticus replied respectfully, "Yes, Mr. Abbott."

Confused, Ophelia thought, 'Why did Finnegan want me to report to the secretarial department? Does he already know who I am? Is he planning on humiliating me there?'

'Gosh, please don't. How am I gonna face my work and life ahead?'

Before she could ask anything, Finnegan had already walked away with his long legs.

Seeing that, she continued to think, 'He's not here to settle accounts with me?'

'Then why did he assign me to the secretarial department?'

'I don't get it.'

'Well, I'm just glad that he's not giving me a hard time.'

Relieved, she turned to Atticus. "Mr. Montgomery, may I ask what did Mr. Abbott mean? Why did he put me in the secretarial department?"

Atticus smiled, "Ophelia, congratulations. You're promoted. You're the first to go straight from an intern to a secretary, not to mention that it's coming from Mr. Abbott directly."

"Why me?" Ophelia was very perplexed and depressed. She thought, 'Did Finnegan recognize me? He wanted to torture me slowly by having me working next to him?'

Atticus sized her up and said, "Perhaps because you seem honest and have a fiancé. Mr. Abbott happens to be short of a secretary, and you seem like a safe choice."

After all, if Finnegan chose a single and beautiful female secretary, she would probably spend all her time trying to figure out a way to seduce him.

Hearing Atticus' words, Ophelia felt very speechless.

In fact, she was very beautiful, practically a star-level beauty back at university. She deliberately chose outdated clothes and used heavy bangs and glasses to hide her beauty so that she wouldn't be harassed by men.

She was just an intern here without power or influence, and dressing up would bring her unnecessary trouble.

Noticing Ophelia's silence, Atticus thought he had hurt her feelings and apologized, "Ophelia, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to insult you. Go report to the secretarial department."

Ophelia snapped out of it and smiled, "Thank you, Mr. Montgomery. I'll treat you to dinner when you're free."

Being promoted and transferred to the secretarial department out of the blue, Ophelia felt very uneasy, especially afraid of seeing Finnegan. Her mind was occupied by one thought only. Did Finnegan know it was her last night?

Their encounter lasted for just several minutes, yet she already felt tortured. If she had to face him every day, she probably would collapse.

Realizing that, while being tortured, she tried to be as invisible as possible, avoiding places where Finnegan might appear.

Leaving the office at the end of the day, Ophelia took a deep breath. Working as his secretary felt no different from being in prison.

Abbott's Corporation was a super-large company with high pay and good benefits. Otherwise, she would have resigned.

Now that she had been promoted and received a raise, she felt like she was selling her body for money.

Rather then going back by subway, she decided to splurge and take a taxi home today.

In the taxi, she texted Seraphina.

Ophelia: [Seraphina, I've become a regular worker and got a pay raise. My treat tonight. What would you like to eat?]

At the same time, Seraphina was at Crystal Meadows.

Ophelia had no idea that right now, Seraphina was sitting anxiously on the living room sofa, sitting across from Finnegan.
