Chapter 6 It Can't Be That Coincidental
Virtualicious Bistro was a top-ranked private restaurant in H City, known for its impeccable service and delicious dishes. It was only open for reservation by high-end clients, and reservations had to be made at least a month in advance.
Harper had to pull some strings to get a reservation yesterday.
The restaurant's decor was also elegant, with each seat separated by a small wooden door in the front, and no ceiling covering. The hanging lights above created an atmospheric setting during dinner.
The group pushed open the door and sat down at a round table.
Soon, the waiter came over with the dishes.
Riley was afraid that the little girl next to her wouldn't feel comfortable, so she kept her attention on the little girl and occasionally helped her with the food and wiped her mouth.
Landon and Winston sat on her other side, finding the chubby cheeks of the little girl adorable. They diligently peeled the shrimp for her.
The little girl couldn't stop eating, completely focused on dealing with the growing mountain of food in front of her.
"Did you hear? The Wilder family's little princess has gone missing. The Wilder family has sent a large group of people and turned H City upside down, but they haven't found her!"
At this moment, a faint discussion came from the neighboring table.
Another voice sounded a bit cautious, "Could she have been kidnapped? That kidnapper must be really bold. The Wilder family's little princess is Donovan's apple of the eye. They treat her with extreme care. If anyone dares to harm her, they must be tired of living."
Upon hearing Donovan's name, Riley unconsciously slowed down her actions and became a bit absent-minded.
The discussion at the neighboring table continued, "That's true. Although that little princess has always been mute and never spoken a word, she can't escape her good fortune. She was born into such a good family!"
Riley paused, a hint of surprise flashing in her eyes. Donovan's little princess, who she had found, was mute. This young girl, who never spoke a word, had the perfect demeanor and attire befitting the Wilder family's status. And then, the voice of that man on the phone just now. With that thought in mind, Riley suppressed her shock and glanced at the child sitting on her left.
The young girl seemed to feel something and looked up, meeting Riley's gaze with large, questioning eyes. As their eyes locked, Riley felt as if she had been struck by lightning. 'Could this little girl be Donovan's daughter?' she thought. Harper also stopped eating, staring at the young girl for a few seconds, her heart sinking. Trying to reassure herself, she said, "It can't be that coincidental, right?"
As Riley's closest friend, Harper was well aware of what had happened six years ago. This little girl appeared to be around five or six years old, similar in age to Landon and Winston. If she really was Donovan's daughter, it could only mean that after her friend divorced him, that man had quickly started a family with the person he liked! Was he that impatient? Harper couldn't help but feel sorry for her friend even just thinking about it.
Riley didn't know what Harper was thinking, but as she contemplated the events that had unfolded since finding the young girl, she grew more and more convinced that she was indeed Donovan's daughter. Her expression turned grim, and she said, "I think it's just that coincidental."
Seeing her certainty, Harper's heart sank even further. She glanced at the bewildered young girl and lowered her voice to ask Riley, "What should we do now? Donovan should already be on his way."
Riley's face showed uncertainty. After a moment, she took out her phone and handed it to Harper, saying, "Take my phone and pretend to make the call later. I'll take Landon and Winston to the parking lot to wait for you."
Understanding, Harper nodded. Riley glanced at the still clueless young girl by her side and couldn't help but soften her heart. "I'll leave this little girl in your care," she said, before turning her gaze to the two young boys. "Let's go."
Landon and Winston didn't question further and obediently got up, following behind her. As they passed by the young girl, a small hand tugged at Riley's clothing. She turned her head, her expression filled with complex emotions.
The young girl tightly held onto Riley's clothes, panic filling her big eyes. Seeing her pitiful state, Riley couldn't bring herself to be cruel.
No matter what happened between her and Donovan, the child was innocent.
In the end, Riley reassured her, "Auntie has to go, but this auntie will take care of you. Be good and wait here. Your dad will be here soon."
After saying that, she cruelly pushed away the little girl's hand and left the compartment, not daring to look back.
At the same time, Harper hurriedly had the extra three sets of bowls and forks removed.
Not long after the waiter took away the bowls and chopsticks, the wooden door was pushed open.
A group of well-dressed black-clad bodyguards formed two rows, leaving a passage in the middle.
Harper saw this formation and instinctively straightened her posture, pretending to be calm as she looked at the entrance.
She only saw Donovan's cold face as he walked briskly from outside, his long legs striding.
