Chapter 7 Disgusted by Her
There were only two people in the compartment.
Donovan's gaze swept through the compartment and finally landed on his daughter.
The little girl had just felt aggrieved by Riley's sudden departure, but now upon seeing her father, she not only showed no fear, but even turned her head away in a huff.
Donovan's eyes slightly darkened.
"Finley, are you alright?"
Both the father and daughter were not ones to talk, so Paxton, the assistant, came in handy.
The little girl glanced at him, turned her head away in a huff, ignoring him.
Paxton carefully looked her over and breathed a sigh of relief when he saw that she was unharmed. He turned to report to Donovan.
Donovan nodded, his eyes narrowing as he looked at the person sitting next to his daughter.
Meeting his gaze, Harper's heart tightened. She forcefully pinched her palm to barely maintain her composure.
"Where is Riley?"
Donovan's gaze swept over Harper's face, clearly recognizing her appearance, his face darkening.
He actually recognized Riley!
Harper was both shocked for her friend and relieved that she escaped in time.
The man's imposing presence almost left her breathless.
Who knows what would have happened if Riley was present!
"I don't know what you're talking about! Who are you people? Why did you come in without knocking?"
Harper collected her thoughts and put on her best acting, holding the little girl protectively in her arms, vigilantly looking at the person in front of her.
Donovan furrowed his eyebrows, "The one in your arms is my daughter. Did you call me just now?"
Harper hesitated for a moment but bravely said, "Yes, it was me."
Donovan stared at her expressionlessly, his gaze slowly scanning every detail in the compartment.
The tone of this woman in front of him was indeed somewhat similar to the voice on the phone.
However, he couldn't be fooled.
And, the disguise in the booth seemed too hasty.
There were indeed only bowls and forks for two people on the table, but the three seats next to it were crooked.
The waiters at Virtualicious Bistro would not make such mistakes, they must have been deliberately moved.
A table full of dishes is not just for one woman and a child, it should be more.
Donovan's gaze swept around the booth and then returned to Harper.
When their eyes met, Harper inexplicably felt a sinking feeling in her heart.
The next second, she only saw the man asking his assistant for a phone, his distinct knuckles swiping the screen twice, and then he looked up at her.
On the table, the phone that Riley left her when he left rang.
Harper was unprepared and trembled when she heard the sound. She lowered her head and pretended to check the caller ID, hesitated for a few seconds, and then hung up the phone as if nothing had happened, meeting the man's gaze. "Since you are the child's father, take her away."
After speaking, she touched the little girl's head, put her on the ground, and pushed her in Donovan's direction.
Donovan raised an eyebrow and took two steps towards the dining table.
Harper thought he was coming to pick up the little girl, and just as she was about to breathe a sigh of relief, she heard the man's voice with suspicion ringing in her ear.
"Miss, you have quite the appetite, ordering a table full of food for just one person and a little girl."
Donovan casually stopped beside the table, his tone implying something.
Harper was speechless.
She had barely let out a breath when she sucked it back in. She looked up and forced a smile. "You don't have to worry about my appetite. The reason why I ordered so much food is because I made plans with my friends who haven't arrived yet."
Donovan raised an eyebrow, "You started eating without your friends being here yet?"
Just as he finished speaking, his gaze swept over the dishes that had been touched.
Harper almost choked.
She lowered her eyes and remained silent for a while before adjusting her expression and putting on a distant smile. "The friends I made plans with are very close to me. They are used to this kind of thing."
After speaking, without waiting for Donovan to ask further, Harper took a deep breath. "Sir, I found your daughter and kindly called you during this time. I also fed your daughter a meal. If you don't want to thank me, it's fine, but why are you interrogating me as if I'm a criminal? What did I do to offend you?"
Her tone was filled with offended dissatisfaction, but in her heart she felt like crying.
Could he please stop asking?
If he asked again, she would have to tell the truth.
Who could handle this kind of pressure?
Parking lot.
Riley held a child with each hand, occasionally glancing at the time, feeling restless.
Donovan's personality was well known to her, and if there were any signs, it would be enough for that man to notice something was off.
She wondered how long Harper could hold on.
If she revealed her situation...
What would happen?
Riley pondered for a while but couldn't come up with an answer.
For a moment, she self-deprecatingly nibbled at her lip.
What was she really afraid of?
Back in the day, the way she treated Donovan, that man probably never wanted to see her again in his life.
Even if they did meet, he might pretend not to recognize her, disgusted by her presence.
It was funny how she scared herself before they even met.
