THE PRICE TO PAY.
Chapter 4
KAYA’s POV.
“Can I keep my parents’ house?” I asked again, this time my voice louder and clearer.
“What audacity! You want to keep your father’s house? Who are you to question the traditions of the pack!” A male wolf, who I presumed was the alpha’s beta, snarled at me.
“Please remain calm and keep your anger in check, do not try to yell at her. She made a request and that too, to the alpha. So only he has the right to grant or deny her request.” Lucian said, in a calm but firm tone.
My heart swelled as this is the first time, someone who was not my parents stood up for me. A drop of year fell from my eyes to my cheeks, and I quickly wiped it, hoping no one would see it.
The Alpha looked at me for some time, as if he was lost in deep thoughts.
“What did you say?” He asked, breaking the uncomfortable silence in the room.
“I said, can I please keep the house? It is the only thing I have in memory of them. I was born and raised in that house. Please my alpha.” I said, my tears rushing down my cheeks and my voice got choked with emotion.
“I will think about your request, but I will make you a promise little one. Until the day I have arrived at a decision, you are free to live in your father’s house. And anyone who threatens you, come report him or her to me.” The alpha said.
I felt a sense of relief wash over me; the alpha gave me his word. I knew it was not a yes, but it was enough for me at this moment.
“Thank you, my alpha. May the moon goddess grant you long life and your reign be fruitful and peaceful.” I said, falling at his feet.
“Thank you, thank you.” I mumbled repeatedly.
“You are welcome little one. I have to end our conversation here, but I think you need rest and I need to think of a way to end this war.” The alpha said and I got the hint.
I quickly rose to my feet and dusted my dress.
“Go with Lucian, he will help you if you need anything. “The alpha said and dismissed me.
“Thank you, my alpha.” I said and left the throne room, with Lucian behind me.
“You are very brave.” Lucian said, as soon as we stepped out of the throne room.
I turned around to look at him, my heart pounding in my chest and I smiled at him. “I took a big risk by making that request. I did not expect the alpha would be so kind to me.”
Lucian smiled, a wide smile that revealed a set of sharp white teeth. “I love what you did in there, your confidence and bravery is impressive. One day I hope to be like you.” Lucian said and we both burst into laughter.
“No I am serious Kaya, I would love to be a brave and courageous wolf like you.” Lucian said.
As my name came out of his mouth, I felt my heart stop beating. The whole world stopped moving and it seemed like even time has stopped.
I looked at him, my heart beating like crazy.
I loved the way he called my name, he set off fireworks in my body, just by calling my name.
Lucian’s voice brought me out of my delusion.
“Kaya..Kaya are you there?” He said, while snapping his fingers to bring me back to earth.
“Yes, I am still here.” I said.
“Looks like you were lost somewhere. Mind sharing with me?” Lucian asked.
I looked at him, my heart racing.
How can I tell you that I am lost in thoughts, not just my thoughts, your thoughts.
“Just missing my parents and thinking of how life would be without them by my side.” I said.
Lucian’s expression changed from a curious one to a sad one. “I am sorry for your loss. Your parents are heroes, and they will always be remembered. We will always be grateful to them.”
I smiled, a sense of pride feeling me. I was proud of my parents, everyone in the pack would see them as heroes.
“Kaya, I am sure you are going through pain. I have no idea what this pain feels like, but I am here for you. Anytime and any day, if you want to talk, or you need a shoulder to lean on and cry, I am always here for you. Please do not hold back cause of fear, I am not saying this as the alpha’s son. I am saying this as a friend.” Lucian said, his voice filled with concern.
My eyes threatened to give way to the dam of tears, threatening to burst open any minute soon.
“Thank you, Lucian, but you are a very busy man. I will not burden you with my little problems. You have other important things to do I am sure of it.”
“Stop saying that, Kaya. I will always be here for you and all you must do is say the word.” Lucian said and pulled me into a hug.
“Really Kaya? Is this what you parents have thought you? Trap the son of the alpha using the damsel in distress act? Common Kaya, your parents just died, and you are already in a young man’s arms.” The Luna of the pack, Freya, said in a mocking tone.
“I thought you were sad, and disturbed. I thought you were in so much pain, hence you begged to be allowed to keep the house! But here you are, seeking for the prince’s pity and care. Attention seeker.” She spat at the side and stood in front of me.
My blood ran cold, and my stomach clenched. Luna Freya was not the one who I would want to look in her eye, she was ruthless and cold.
“About the house.” she said, and her lips curled up into a sneer.
My heart stopped beating...” why did she need the house?”
