Chapter 6
"Simeon Ortiz and another were the brothers to Jack. Simeon is the youngest of the brothers and not the smarter. I'm pretty sure of that. He was too inquisitive of his good and discovered some secrets he wouldn't have wished himself to have discovered." D grimaced and then relented as though being completely vague would be too hard. "Simeon confronted his mother, and that wasn't well received. To guarantee her safety and to make sure that the young man stayed quiet, she was forced into..." He hesitated and swallowed saliva.
"Servitude, and in a sense, Someone dragged his brother into it as well. Every week their mother threw up expensive parties and her sons were subjected to work in the parties and were more than servants."
I immediately felt a mixture of relief and disappointment, my whole body became warm. So much for the earth's shuttering reveals. "So the Man I was to get married to was a robber or some other kind of gang?"
A partial Lough escaped his tight lips. "He didn't tell you anything. Just from your statements. Did he? No, it wasn't a robbery gang. I believe the word that will suit that best would be, a Coven."
"You mean? A coven? Do you want to tell me it's something to do with JuJu's magic and some witchcraft? Some free cults and more staff of sought?" That was a surprise to me. Although at that point, it started to make sense in my head. Jack at some point held some kind of weird ideas and often had paranoid, haunted looks in his eyes. I had no idea that there could be some sought cults around our place until maybe on the arrival of the new coven.
"Not a cult but mh, that definable term will work for now"
D waved me to silence before I could ask what he meant. "At one of the expensive parties, Someone started to talk about some things he shouldn't specifically do, to people he should never have said, he started to mention people he shouldn't have mentioned. His mother liked to control people through fear, and the fear of destruction and harm befalling your loved ones is a very, I guess very good motivator. Now, Simeon Ortiz mentioned to the wrong people that Jack had found a friend from the Beur family.
"Excuse me, when did that happen?" Why would Jack and his entire family discuss me, and my family? I could recall how Jack became my good friend before things hooked us up. The two of us were casuals, we had met and agreed time and again that our closeness meant nothing at that time. No commitment, no feelings, and no attachments.
Anytime I felt close to him, I had to remind myself that he wasn't the kind of a guy I could love. He had too much past and a little future. More ways he was going was down: he was a good friend, but at first I couldn't see him as a boyfriend material.
At the time, he was meant for casual affairs, but he was about to be my husband.
"Husband? Coven?" My brain stuttered as I repeated D's words. He had just said that Jack loved me, I don't know how he knew it more than I did. But the expression on his face seemed to ask if I was okay with his words. It was an answer that I wasn't sure about, it then forced me to look away and throw my phone into my pocket for something else to be done. "And?"
D seemed so uncertain about how to continue. "I am sorry. I assumed, since you were lovers that such an attachment could lead to marriage. Obviously, some amount of feelings were evident" I opened my mount softly in an attempt to correct him and then decided to let it go. I was wondering how he knew I was about to get married to Jack, this was kept a secret between our families and no one from outside knew about this, even members of the Moon Stone pack knew nothing about this. But this guy seemed to know the whole thing.
With a look of concern, he continued. "The mother of the coven- maybe I should use the word, knew that you existed, and she started using you as a weapon to threaten Ortiz. Jack, on the other hand, had no knowledge of whether his brother had mentioned you, and he believed that your existence was a secret to the covens.
That was their mother's weapon, to control Ortiz. You can imagine when their mother could decide to hurt you and put the blame on Ortiz. Or maybe she tells Jack that she got to know you through Ortiz's indiscretion." When I blinked, he sighed and specified, " I a sure that man would have wanted blood, he couldn't imagine whether it was his brother's or not. Now, Ortiz knew it and because of that, the schema worked for a while but Ortiz ended up telling his brother about the mistakes he had made and the threats he had received from their mother. Jack..." D paused for a while again.
"Your man didn't take it well"
" Together with his brother, the two worked together to steal something that their mother had always wanted to have in her territories. Something he was ready to kill for, the two hoped to use it as a bargaining weapon, but as you can guess. It didn't work with her."
