Past Encounter
[Rain’s POV]
“Hey wait man, why are you rushing?” Damein said and turned to face me. “I know you enjoy walking but still, you have to go with Celeb. You can't be late for a job interview since it's already 8: 30 am and at 10 you have to be there.” he reminded me.
“Hey mom, good morning,” Ethan, their third triplet said while hugging their aunt. He tossed his white lab coat on the sofa and sat on the table for breakfast. He ignored me just like I don't exist for him. All triplets treat me differently. Well, I don't mind that because I'm already getting what I want from two of them.
“Ok you have 5 minutes to finish your breakfast, I'm waiting for you outside in the car,” Celeb ordered me and went to his black SUV car.
“Ok,” I said as I turned around and shoved a piece of bacon in my mouth.
After I was done eating breakfast, I quickly got up, picked my file and black law coat. I hugged and kissed her on the top of her head before walking out of the door. I slid into Celeb's car, where he was waiting for me. As soon as I settled inside he started the car and drove. As we joined the bustling crowd on the streets, the morning rush was in full swing. The air was filled with the sound of cars honking and people chatting, creating a lively atmosphere. I already knew that our ride would be boring, so I Slipped my air-pods into my ears, and flipped through my music until I found something that I liked. There is a bit of a pep in my step. Today is going to be a good day. I have to get this job no matter what.
After a thirty-minute drive, he stopped the car in front of a huge law firm building. The tall glass and white walls gave off the impression that the building was an alien space station or had been abducted by aliens from another planet. I was about to exit from his car when he grabbed my wrist and made me turn to face him. I was surprised by his actions, but he seems quite calm.
“Best of luck,” he said while looking at me through his sunglasses. I must say he is breathtaking.
“Thanks,” I shrugged and grabbed my file and exited his car. Before entering the building I turned my head to look at him who was still watching me. “Why is he still here?” I thought to myself. “Earlier he was running late.” I sigh and roll my eyes. Upon entering the office, I noticed the same atmosphere, still and calm, just like outside the building. There is no hustle and bustle. Everyone seems busy with their own work. Checking through the criminal files and matching samples with their criminal data on the computer.
I studied law and always wanted to become a lawyer, but this would be my first time practicing as a professional if I get this job. I took a deep breath and plastered a fake yet warm smile on my face as I approached the receptionist and told her the purpose of my visit. She nodded with the same warm smile, but I really can’t tell whether it's fake or not. She picked up the phone and dialed a number. After waiting for a few seconds, she spoke and took my name and told them about the purpose of my visit. As the phone hung up she asked me to wait for 5 minutes in the waiting area because the senior lawyer who will take my interview is in a meeting with other lawyers. I nodded with the same warm smile and walked towards the sofa. I waited patiently for 5 minutes in the waiting area, and he still hasn't come out. I'm starting to get nervous now, and I have no idea what to do with myself. It already felt like 10 minutes, when the door opened and in came a short guy wearing a suit and tie. He smiled and said hello before heading straight towards me and shaking my hand. Then he invited me to go up to the office where the interview would be conducted.
I said thank you with a slight bow in my head and went upstairs to the referred office. The way to his office looked very modern, with big windows looking out over a city park. Suddenly, my eyes fell on the wall of the main office. I was shocked as soon as I saw it. I never expected to see it here. I saw the name plate outside the office wall which read as “Advocate Lucas Barlas, Head of the department.” My brain froze when I saw this name after 1 year. My hands went all shaky and I don't know whether it's because of anger or fear. All those memories were coming back, and I couldn't stop feeling angry now. Anger at myself, rage at Lucas who took away my family, my peace, and my pack, anger at him for ruining my life.
I can never forget how he let my parents die in the car accident that cost me everything. I'll kill that bastard. I took a deep breath and walked straight into the office. I immediately sat down in a chair facing him and tried not to look at my reflection on the window behind. This made things out of hand and even worse the guy seated next to me didn't seem bothered by anything. I guess he is showing me his good manners, as if I don't know his true nature. Ironic huh!!
We were quiet the whole 30 min until he broke the ice. “Hello Ms. Rain Jackson I’m Lucas Barlas. You can call me Lucas. How are you?” he asked politely. I knew the bastard I thought in my mind but only replied with a small bow head and then answered him.“I am fine and very well thank you." I answered with a fake smile. He smiled slightly again.“I know this will sound sudden, but since we are going to be working together in future, and you need help in this case,” He asked with plain expressions.
“I'm here for an interview, aren't you going to ask me a question?” I asked, sounding a little surprised.
“I know your talent already and Dr. Celeb recommended you here so I think you're the right choice for my law firm,” he said looking at the laptop screen. Phew!! At least he remembered me. I let out a heavy sigh. Another 5 minutes passed without any words.
“I think it is best if you start with the first question right off the bat. Is there anything specific you want from me about this?” He said, breaking the silence.
I hesitated for a second or two but decided it's better to just go straight forward. “Yeah, actually. Could you please give me a copy of the file you used for this lawsuit?” I asked politely again. He looked surprised for a second and then nodded, smiling. He took out a black leather bookbag beside his chair and handed it to me. After taking the book and starting leafing through it, I put it aside. We spent another 20 mins or so answering some irrelevant questions about the case.
