Regret and decision

Dimitri

As soon as we left the event, a heavy silence filled the car. I was driving quickly, my hands gripping the steering wheel tightly. Stress and anger boiled inside me, each thought taking me back to the earlier argument. Haizel, sitting in the passenger seat, looked out the window, but I could feel her tension.

Finally, I stopped the car in front of her house. The engine was still running when she turned to me, her eyes searching mine. "Dimitri, we need to talk about this. We can't just ignore what happened there."

"I don't want to talk about it now, Haizel," I said, trying to stay calm, but my voice betrayed the frustration I felt. "You made serious accusations there, and now is not the time to discuss it."

"We can't ignore it, Dimitri. You need to know the truth," she insisted, her voice firmer than before.

I turned off the car and turned to her, my patience finally running out. "The truth? The truth is that you don't trust me. You think I would ignore my own son? That I wouldn't know if he was mine or not?"

Haizel shook her head, tears beginning to form in her eyes. "It's not that, Dimitri. I just... I just want to be sure. I want you to be sure."

"I know Lowrence is my son," I said, each word coming out with effort. "Angel wouldn't lie about that. And even if she hid him for so long, I believe her. And if you can't understand that, then maybe we shouldn't be together."

Haizel was silent for a moment, clearly struggling to find the right words. "I just want what's best for you, Dimitri. I want you to be happy."

"Then why can't you just trust me?" I asked, my voice now low but filled with emotion. "Why does everything have to be a struggle, a matter of proving something?"

She looked down, her hands twisting in her lap. "I thought I was doing this for us. But maybe I was wrong."

I sighed, rubbing my temple as I tried to control the wave of anger and frustration. "Haizel, I'm tired. Tired of fighting, tired of proving things. I need someone who stands by my side, who trusts me without questioning every step."

She raised her eyes to mine, her tears finally falling down her face. "I'm sorry, Dimitri. I didn't want to make you feel like this."

I shook my head, feeling a weight on my chest. "I know. But that doesn't change what happened. It doesn't change how I feel now."

The silence that followed was suffocating. I knew I needed to be honest, to end this before it got even worse. "Haizel, I think we both need some time. We need to think about what we really want."

Her eyes widened, surprised and hurt. "You're breaking up with me?"

"I think it's best for both of us," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "We're hurting each other more than helping."

Haizel let out a sob, her tears now falling freely. "I love you, Dimitri. I didn't want this to happen."

"I didn't either," I admitted, feeling my own heart ache with each word. "But I need peace. I need to resolve my own issues before I can be with someone."

She nodded slowly, as if absorbing my words. "I understand. I just... I just wish things were different."

"I do too," I said softly. "But for now, we need to separate. We need to find our own answers. Take care, Haizel," I replied, watching as she walked towards the house.

I stayed in the car for a few minutes, letting the reality of the situation sink in. My heart was heavy, but at the same time, I felt an unexpected relief. Maybe this was the first step to finding peace.

I turned the car back on and drove back to the event. I needed to find Angel and understand what had happened.

When I got back to the event, the atmosphere had visibly changed. The festive mood had diminished, and I could see small groups of people talking in low tones. It was clear that our earlier confrontation had left its mark. I scanned the room, looking for Angel, but she was nowhere to be found.

Alpha Luke approached me, his expression a mix of concern and frustration. "Alpha Dimitri, we need to talk. Angel left with Lowrence. She'll be staying at a hotel tonight."

"She left?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. The weight of the evening's events was crushing me.

"Yes," Alpha Luke said, his tone softer. "She thought it best to leave for a while. I took her there. She's safe."

I nodded, feeling a mix of relief and disappointment. "I need to see her. I need to talk to her."

Alpha Luke put a hand on my shoulder. "Give her some time, Alpha Dimitri. She's been through a lot tonight. So have you."

I sighed, rubbing my temples as I tried to process everything. "I just want to make things right."

"I know," Alpha Luke said. "But pushing her now won't help. Let her have some space."

I reluctantly agreed, knowing he was right. "Okay. But I need to see my son."

"You will," Alpha Luke assured me. "But for now, go home. Get some rest."

I nodded, feeling the fatigue of the night settling in. "Thank you, Alpha Luke. I appreciate it."

He gave me a comforting pat on the back before walking away. I stood there for a moment, taking in the scene around me. The night had started with so much promise, but it had turned into chaos and heartache. As I made my way to the exit, I couldn't help but feel the heavy burden of my responsibilities weighing down on me.
