Chapter 3 Promiscuous Man and Woman
The next morning, Josephine started her rounds and opened the door to a fancy suite. She heard laughter and paused, stepping back into the hallway, her eyes downcast to hide her feelings.
Her close friend, Liam Clement, who was standing next to her, noticed her sad expression and asked, "What's up?"
Liam was tall, handsome, funny, and charming. He wore a white coat with gold-rimmed glasses, giving him a refined look.
They had grown up together, like siblings, and now worked at the same hospital.
Josephine shook her head, pointed to the room, and gave a bitter smile. "Stuart and his lover."
The door wasn't fully closed, and you could hear faint laughter from a man and woman near the entrance.
Liam had never gotten along with Stuart since they were kids, and he could easily recognize his enemy's voice. "Damn Stuart."
Liam rolled up his sleeves, ready to confront Stuart. Josephine grabbed him and pulled him to the fire escape. Despite his gentle demeanor, few knew about his fiery temper, but a look from Josephine often calmed him down.
Liam's face darkened. "Josephine, it's been three years. Haven't you had enough? Divorce Stuart. He's not worth it. We were supposed to hate Stuart since we were kids, right? You two were never meant to be married."
Josephine turned slightly, staring at the ceiling to avoid Liam's words.
In Hustalia's wealthy second-generation circle, there were two factions: one led by Josephine and Liam, and the other by Stuart.
The two factions had never gotten along, always fighting and arguing since they were kids.
If it weren't for that incident, she would never have fallen for Stuart.
So, her marriage to Stuart was met with a lot of criticism from both sides.
She had left her faction and resolutely married Stuart.
Liam didn't want Josephine to keep avoiding the issue. Why stick with something that would only lead to ruin?
He firmly turned Josephine to face him, his tone unusually serious. "Josephine, how long are you going to keep avoiding this? Stuart doesn't love you. Even after getting married, he brings women to the hospital just to provoke you. He doesn't care about your feelings at all. You're only torturing yourself. Enough is enough. It hurts to see you like this."
"Liam, it's okay. Don't worry about my affairs. Maybe I'll come to my senses soon." Josephine's tone was less firm than before, showing a hint of wavering.
Seeing this, Liam didn't dare to push her too hard.
He adjusted his expression and playfully ruffled Josephine's hair to ease the tension between them. "Alright, I hope you come to your senses soon and get rid of Stuart."
Josephine obediently nodded.
"What are you two doing behind my back?"
A sudden angry outburst caught Josephine and Liam off guard, their smiles fading as they turned towards the source of the voice.
Stuart, clad in a dark suit, stood gloomily by the fire escape, one hand supporting the frail Doris while the other pressed against the door.
Stuart said, "Mrs. Haustia, enjoying yourself, huh? In broad daylight, with a promiscuous man here..."
Stuart's icy gaze swept over Josephine and Liam, his voice chilling the air with a sharp emphasis on "promiscuous."
Liam sneered, stepping closer to Josephine and placing his hand on her shoulder.
His gaze was hostile as he provocatively said to Stuart, "Of course, we're doing what you and your promiscuous woman are doing right now! What, you can do it, but Josephine can't?"
Liam mocked Stuart's tone, saying "promiscuous woman." If Stuart could show affection to such a woman in front of Josephine, what about in private? How much humiliation had Josephine endured? Stuart didn't deserve someone as wonderful as Josephine; he belonged with a promiscuous woman.
Doris tried to speak, "You..."
She put on a pitiful expression, hoping to gain Stuart's sympathy. But the tension between the three was thick, and she knew she couldn't intervene right now.
"Take your hand off. Our family's matters are none of your business," Stuart said, his gaze darkening as he looked at Liam's hand on Josephine's shoulder.
Liam didn't move, pretending to be surprised. "I've been Josephine's close friend since we were kids. She doesn't see me as an outsider. And who are you to order me around?"
Stuart replied, "Naturally, as Josephine's husband."
Liam's tone was sharp. "Oh, the husband who flirts with promiscuous women anytime, anywhere? A womanizing husband isn't worth keeping."
Turning to Josephine, Liam earnestly advised, "Josephine, hurry up and divorce this player. There's someone better out there."
Stuart's eyes blazed with anger. He abruptly released Doris and strode wordlessly towards Josephine.
He didn't notice Doris stumbling a few steps as she lost his support.
"Stuart, what are you doing?" Liam stepped in front of Josephine, looking defensive.
Stuart sneered. "Divorce? Would Mrs. Haustia be willing to divorce me?"
Caught off guard, Liam lost his momentum; after all, Josephine loved Stuart and didn't want a divorce.
Furious, he raised his hand to start a fight. "You..."
Josephine suddenly reached out and grabbed Liam's sleeve. "Liam."
Liam looked down and saw the vulnerability in Josephine's eyes that she could no longer hide. He couldn't bear it and slowly lowered his raised hand.
Stuart gritted his teeth. "Josephine."
What did Josephine mean by this?
As Mrs. Haustia, she was openly pulling and tugging with another man in front of her husband.
Stuart thought, 'Liam, Liam? Even after marriage, she called him that so intimately. Does she think I'm dead?'
In a fit of anger, Stuart yanked Josephine behind him. Liam swiftly grabbed her other hand, and for a tense moment, the two men struggled, neither willing to let go.
Josephine felt troubled. "Don't do this, let go."
She could feel that both Stuart and Liam were being careful with their strength, not wanting to hurt her, but being caught between them was still uncomfortable.
Stuart coldly stared at Liam's hand holding Josephine's, his anger growing, and he shouted, "Let go of her hand."
Liam sneered. "What, you allow promiscuous women to touch you, but Josephine can't let anyone else touch her?"
Liam's words sparked a nameless fury in Stuart, his fist clenching with a crack. Doris, displeased by his focus on Josephine, felt his eyes should be on her alone.
"Don't do this, Josephine will get hurt." Doris pretended to intervene, reaching out to pull Liam's hand away.
Liam, with his fiery temper, showed a flash of disgust in his eyes and, without much thought, harshly pushed Doris away.
A barely noticeable smile appeared at the corner of Doris's mouth as she fell backward, landing heavily on the ground.
Sitting weakly on the floor, her expression shifted from disbelief to shock, tears welling up in her eyes.
"Doris, are you okay?" Stuart let go of Josephine and squatted down to check on Doris.
Doris's eyes reddened, her lips trembling slightly, but she forced a smile. "I'm fine!"
As she spoke, her face gradually turned pale, her brows furrowing, and her hand quietly reached to rub her ankle.
Stuart, noticing this, spoke with a tone full of affection, "You, always reluctant to trouble me."
As soon as he finished speaking, Stuart coldly said, "Liam, if this happens again, you'll regret it."
He then gently picked up Doris and said softly, "I'll take you to see a doctor."
