Chapter 1 Can We Not Get Divorced?

Lily Brown looked at the divorce agreement prepared on the table, and Edward Wellington had already signed his name on it.

She looked up again, her eyes watery. Edward, tall and handsome, stood by the window in the afternoon sunlight, resembling a god-like figure. He appeared cold, arrogant, and dominant, and even his back revealed his ruthlessness.

"I've signed, so you should sign it quickly. Before Nicole comes back, I want to go through all the legal procedures with you," Edward said, his hands behind his back, without looking back.

"Because we made a prenuptial agreement, our divorce does not involve property division. But I will give you twenty million dollars plus a villa in the suburbs as compensation. After all, if I don't give you anything, I won't be able to explain it to my grandfather."

Lily felt as if she had been struck by lightning, and her heart sank. "Does your grandfather know that you want to divorce me?"

"What does it matter if he doesn't know? Does it affect my decision?" Lily, frail and unsteady, held onto the edge of the table and tearfully asked in a soft voice, "Edward, can we not get divorced?"

Finally, Edward turned around and looked at her with a strange gaze.

His lips were thin, his eyes deep, and his eyebrows sharp, but his distinct face would still attract her.

"Why?"

"Because I love you."

Lily's eyes reddened, tears filling her eyes. "I love you, Edward. I still want to be your wife, even if you don't love me..."

"I've had enough, Lily. A marriage without love is tormenting every second for me."

Edward waved his hand, showing no patience to listen further. "It was a mistake for you to marry me back then. You knew I was at odds with my grandfather. You also knew that I had someone I liked. It's just that, for some reason, we couldn't be together. Now, the three-year period is over. Nicole has also returned from Mythorica. I'm going to marry her, so you have to give up the title of Mrs. Wellington."

Lily lowered her head. Crystal's tears fell onto the table, which she quickly wiped away.

But Edward still saw it, squinting his charming eyes.

At that moment, his phone rang. As soon as he saw the name on the screen, he quickly answered.

"Nicole, have you boarded the plane?"

Lily thought, 'What a gentle tone! Is this the same person as the cold man I know?'

"Edward, I've already arrived at Mugden Airport," Nicole Adams, the person Edward liked, said on the other end of the phone, her voice filled with delight.

"What? Weren't you supposed to...tonight?"

"Edward, I wanted to surprise you."

"Wait for me. Nicole, I'll come pick you up now!"

After speaking, Edward swiftly left Lily's side, as if a gust of wind had blown by.

The study door closed, and the atmosphere seemed especially sad.

Lily had been secretly in love with Edward for ten years, and they had been married for three years. She had worked hard to take care of their home and deeply loved him, but for him, all of this was just torment.

Now, Edward, as if being released from prison, heartlessly abandoned her and turned to marry Nicole, whom he loved deeply.

Lily was incredibly heartbroken. She had put in all her passion, but she still couldn't warm his cold heart.

She took a deep breath and shook her head with a bitter smile. Reluctantly, tears stained the beautiful name of Edward on the divorce agreement.

At night, Edward brought Nicole back to Riverside Villa.

He held the fragile woman in his arms as he walked into the mansion without any concern, drawing the onlookers' attention.

"Edward, you haven't even divorced Lily yet. We shouldn't be too affectionate. She might resent me if she sees us like this," Nicole gently whispered as she caressed his chest.

"She won't."

Edward said decisively, "Besides, I don't love her. We only had a contractual relationship. She needs to understand boundaries."

The Wellington family surrounded Nicole, caring for her like stars surrounding the moon. Only Lily prepared food alone in the dining room.

In the midst of the lively scene, Edward saw her lonely figure and couldn't help but sneer.

He thought, 'In this situation, she still cringes at the thought of pleasing the Wellington family. Does she really think I won't divorce her because of this?'

‘She's truly ridiculous.’

"Mr. Wellington! Mr. Wellington!"

Soon, the butler hurried over. "Mrs. Wellington... Mrs. Wellington has left!"

"She left? When?"

"Just... just now! Mrs. Wellington left through the back door without taking anything, and she was picked up by a black car!"

Edward quickly returned to the bedroom. The room was clean and tidy, with only a signed divorce agreement quietly placed on the bedside table, bearing traces of tears.

He frowned and walked to the window to look outside.

A Rolls-Royce sped away from Riverside Villa at an incredible speed. Edward soon couldn't even see the taillights.

He thought, 'She was reluctant to leave this afternoon, but now she escaped even faster than a rabbit!'

Edward felt manipulated and displeased; he took out his phone and called his secretary, Bart Hanks.

"Find out who the owner of the license plate KST 9999 is!"

"Yes, Mr. Wellington."

Five minutes later, Bart called Edward.

"Mr. Wellington, I found it. It's the car of the CEO of KnightSpear Group!"

Edward thought, 'KnightSpear Group... Is the eldest son of the Taylor family?'

‘Lily was a girl who came from a small village with no money or background. In the three years she was with me, she didn't even have any friends. How can she manage to hook up with someone from the Taylor family?’

‘Does she quickly move on to another man? She's really something!’

"Mr. Wellington, but did you really mention divorce to Mrs. Wellington today?" Bart asked tentatively.

"What? Can't I mention it today? Do I have to wait until next year?" Edward was furious.

"No... today is Mrs. Wellington's birthday."

Edward suddenly froze.

In the back seat of the black Rolls-Royce, Landon Taylor, the eldest son of the Taylor family, gently held Evelyn Taylor's hand and gave a warm squeeze.

"Simon heard that you're back, and he has already prepared fireworks worth millions of dollars, wanting to celebrate your birthday tonight."

"I don't really feel like watching fireworks."

Evelyn is no longer Lily. Back to being the Taylor family's heiress, she leaned on Landon's shoulder. She sighed sadly, her eyes filled with tears.

She glanced at Lily's phone. The last message wasn't from her ex-husband but from Nicole.

[As I said, you stole my place, and sooner or later, I will make you give it back. Edward is mine. Stop dreaming!]

Evelyn couldn't help but wryly smile. Her last tear brought her complete clarity.

"What? Things have come to this point, and you're still reluctant to let him go?" Landon embraced her tenderly.

"Landon, today is my birthday."

"I know. Edward purposely chose today. He really is a despicable jerk!"

"So, it's not that I'm reluctant to let him go. Lily have already been killed by Edward's own hands."

When Evelyn opened her eyes again, her gaze was persistent, and she no longer had any infatuation for Edward.

"I've fought so hard to survive. If there's any part of me that still wants to be with him, I should be damned."
