Chapter 3: Divorce Agreement
Mary looked at Matthew, her voice hoarse, "Tell mesomething."
Matthew didn't respond and just said plainly, "Eat first."
Matthew pushed Mary aside and walked to the dining table, placing breakfast on it.
Mary's heart sank even further. She stared at Matthew's back, her eyes filled with pain.
She had stopped Matthew from saying the word "divorce." However, Matthew's attitude clearly showed that he was distancing himself from Mary. He wouldn't even want to give her a single false promise.
The Matthew was different from this before!
In the beginning, Matthew just followed Mary around and stuck to her like glue.
Later, Mary decided to take Matthew in. She started teaching him to read and they learned sign language together. Matthew's gaze towards Mary became increasingly tender and focused.
No matter what Mary did, Matthew's eyes were always on her. It was as if she was his whole world.
"Matthew, you didn't give me a good morning kiss," Mary said as she walked over. It was a promise they had made after getting together.
Matthew pushed the milk in front of her, "Eat first; I have something to tell you later."
Mary clenched her fist, "If I don't eat, does that mean you won't tell me?"
Matthew stared at Mary. After a moment of silence, he slowly spoke, "You must have heard what I said yesterday."
Matthew was referring to what he had said in the room yesterday about the divorce.
Mary closed her eyes and asked, "Why?"
At this point, she could no longer pretend.
Matthew said, "That girl is very important to me. I have to take responsibility for her."
"What about me?" Mary looked at Matthew with a bitter smile, "What does it mean for us to have been together for one year?"
As if something had occurred to her, she walked over to Matthew, "Have you regained your memory? Do you remember who you are now?"
"Yes." Matthew nodded, "Mary, I'm grateful for the year you have been with me. I'll repay you. You can ask for anything, and I'll fulfill it."
"I don't want a divorce," Mary said word by word, looking at him. Mary just wanted to go back to the way things were, to live a simple life together.
A few traces of coldness appeared on Matthew's handsome and sharp face, "We have to get divorced."
At this moment, a cold air suddenly surrounded him, making him distanced.
Mary had never seen him like this before. Her nails dug into her palm as she stared at him, "I'm not getting divorced !"
Compensation? How could Matthew compensate for Mary's year of love and devotion? He couldn't just casually bring up divorce now that she was deeply in love with him.
Matthew frowned, seemingly a bit impatient, "Mary, if you go on like this, neither of us will be happy."
Mary sat down and began to eat her breakfast without saying one more word.
She would never agree to a divorce anyway. She couldn't accept this kind of divorce!
Matthew looked at Mary with a complicated expression. The memories of the past year still lingered in his mind. He didn't want to recall them, but every time he saw her, those beautiful memories came back and made him anxious.
Matthew stood up and said coldly, "I'll have someone send over the divorce papers later. You can ask for any conditions."
With that, Matthew walked straight out.
Mary kicked over a chair beside her, biting her lower lip hard. Tears welled up in her eyes.
They were so deep in love! How could he treat her like this? How could he?
Mary tried hard to control her emotions. She took several deep breaths, her eyes becoming more determined.
The divorce papers came quickly. Mary had just finished breakfast and was about to leave for work when a man in a suit came to her door and handed her the papers.
Mary didn't even look at them. She took them and quickly tore them up.
"Divorce, no way!" she said through gritted teeth, her body trembling.
