Chapter 5: Mary, Hurry Up and Sign
Did Matthew really think of her as his wife? He told her nothing, and then handed her divorce papersthat plunged her into despair!
Mary's heart ached as if it were being torn apart, and her breathing became difficult!
Seeing the tears in Mary's eyes, Matthew's gaze darkened, but his expression grew even colder. "I have my reasons. I amprotecting you from knowing it."
"Hah!" Mary sneered, holding back her tears. "I'm telling you, I won't divorce you!"
After all, they had been in love once. If it was going to end so hastily, she couldn't accept it and couldn't let it go.
Mary turned and walked away.
"You wouldn't want to lose this job, would you?" Matthew's cold voice came from behind her. "You're an orphan, and it's been hard for you to keep a foothold in this city. This job must be very important to you."
Mary looked at him in disbelief and anger. "What are you trying to do?"
Matthew said calmly, "If you sign the divorce papers, what I said before still stands."
Matthew was threatening her!
Mary's hands trembled with anger. She couldn't believe her ears. She couldn't believe that the Matthew who loved her would say such cruel things!
"Matthew, you are despicable!"
How could Matthew become like this? Or perhaps he had always been this cold-hearted, and the tenderness he had shown over the past year was just an illusion.
Matthew casually pulled out a tissue and walked over to Mary, wiping the tears from her eyes. He looked at her, his movements becoming unconsciously soft.
But Mary pushed his hand away, her eyes full of defiance. "If you have the guts, then fire me!"
You want todivorce me? No way!
Mary turned and left. By the time she left the office, her emotions had stabilized.
Matthew's hand froze in the air , and his handsome face tightened.
He reached for the phone and dialled. "Call the HR department..."
But halfway through his words, images of Mary patiently teaching him sign language and how to read flashed through his mind.
He couldn't bring himself to say what he wanted to say.
"Mr. Montagu, what do you need?" the secretary cautiously asked on the other end of the line.
"Nothing." Matthew hung up the phone, his expression growing increasingly irritated.
Mary sat at her desk, carefully contemplating what to do next.
If Matthew really pressuring her for a divorce, should she compromise? She couldn't compromise! She didn't want to end their marriage just like that! But he had changed. The person in his heart was no longer Mary. Even if she kept Matthew, what would be the point?
But Mary felt terrible. She didn't understand why Matthew's love for her had suddenly disappeared.
"Mary, come here a minute ." In the afternoon, Michael White, the President's special assistant, called her.
Mary got up and walked over. Michael said, "Here are some jewelry. You have a good eye. I need to give it to a client."
Mary was a little surprised. Why would he make her do this? There were so many stylishly dressed girls in the office.
Despite her confusion, Mary picked out a set anyway.
Michael smiled and said, "Thank you."
Then he turned and left, leaving Mary feeling a little strange, but she went back to work.
In the evening, Mary returned home to find it cold and empty. She stood in the doorway for a while, dazing, and her heart began to ache again.
Was Matthew not coming back?
Mary sat on the couch and turned on the TV. She didn't want the room to be too quiet, or she would think too much.
"The third son of the Montagu family, who had been missing for a year, has made his first public appearance. He attended a charity gala with a beautiful companion..."
Mary could no longer hear what the host was saying.
She stared intently at the TV screen, her eyes widening in shock.
The girl next to Matthew was wearing the necklace Mary had picked out earlier today! And this girl, Mary seemed to have seen her before!
