CHAPTER FOUR

I didn't have the best of luck, I knew that already but the community being attacked the very day I got here was unthinkable.

Panic gripped me, I was a human among these beasts, how will I survive? I guess that's why he came for me even though he had been accusing me of not being a human.

The handsome but scary man that has been calling me took my hand as I was struggling to keep up with his pace. The sparks were still there but it was mixed with danger signals as I heard growls and snarls from the other side of the pack.

We ran out of the house and he took me down the road that span through the beautiful pack that seemed to be going up in smoke.

He didn't say a word to me and I didn't blame him. His people were in trouble and he was here looking after me because I saw what I was not supposed to see.

It also made me realize that I might actually be more important to him than he let on. He could have let me be killed or at least sent someone else to take me to safety but he decided to come by himself. The action woke all the butterflies in my stomach but the situation we were in didn't let them fly.

When he got to the end of the path, there was a wall covered with green shrubs, he pushed it, his muscles flexing with sweat and power. I couldn't help but blush but when he turned to me, all the feelings disappeared, replaced by dread. He was angry.

“Now, if you want to survive, I suggest you show your true nature as I'll need to go back into the battle to save my pack. There's no more time for games, you hear me? What are you?” he demanded as the wall began to move.

“I swear to you, I'm human," I said as I fought back tears. "I've been working for your company for years, I didn't even know about your type of people until today."

I wondered what he would do to me if he didn't believe me and as his warmth disappeared from my arm, I feared the worst.

“Fine, get in there and don't come out till I call for you” he said as he deposited me into a dark room that seemed to emerge out of nowhere.

I have never been this terrified in the twenty-one years of my existence; but hey, at least everywhere was finally quiet.

*"Ares' POV”

We had planned this battle for three good years.

We had licked our wounds, healed our injured and felt the hurt on our pride after the DarkMoon Pack attacked us in the middle of the night and murdered our father. Our mom has been a shadow of herself and most times, I fear she might join our father at the abode of Selene, the moon goddess.

But we wanted to have revenge for her before she gave up the fight and thus, we planted spies, we trained harder than ever and tonight, we came with the full force of the NightShade Pack.

“Alpha, we are losing on the east side, please send help” my pack member told me in the mindlink.

I turned to my better half, the twin brother that completed my life and who, together, we make an enviable duo, and I watched him in his black wolf form, wiping out other wolves who dared dream of killing him.

“Brother, I'm needed at the eastern side of the pack. I can see you've got this covered” I told him and once he nodded, I set off.

I ran towards the East side of the pack, tearing into wolves as I went, blood coating my fur.

But as my path cleared more and more, so did my sense of smell. Instead of the tick, coppery scent of the blood I had shed, I smelt the scent of a fresh rainfall mixed with a citrus scent. I was mesmerized.

I had always marveled at the bond between my father and mother and even when everything was rough around the pack, their love blossomed. But after he died, she became a shell of herself, unable to eat except we forced her to. She barely left her house and we always made sure to check on and surrounded her with the pack's children.

This made me terrified of the mate bond and even though my wolf pushed me towards that direction, I ignored the pull and continued on my way.

I definitely was not going to accept a mate from this accursed pack even if I changed my mind about the topic.

When I got to the east side of the territory, I saw my members getting decimated but I couldn't see who was doing it.

I howled in anger and they all cleared the path for me to see the son of the beast that had laid my pack to ruins and I saw red.

I ran with speed to him, anger powering my four legs as my wolf form decided to take revenge.

Our heads clashed, my claws sinking into his stomach as he drove his through my thighs and immediately, I heard the scream from the direction my mate was in.

But a strange thing happened. My rival, the only Alpha in the continent who could go head to head with me pushed me away and began running towards the same direction.

I righted myself and chased after him.

I may not want a mate but I definitely didn't want her dead.

If he found out she was mine, he would kill her, which was what every smart Alpha would do in that situation so I ran faster, my heart pounding from fear.

This was the particular reason I avoided the fever of searching for a mate; your entire existence could be turned upside down because of her.

As I chased after my nemesis, I noticed my brother clearing his path with his paws, his fangs tearing into anyone who dared cross his path. He was running towards me as though he was being chased by a hellhound

“What is the problem, Axel?” I pushed the question into his direction through our bond as I continued chasing the Dark Moon Alpha through his Pack. I had to give it to him, he was definitely fit and fast.

“I have been smelling that scent but I wasn't so sure of it until I heard her voice. My mate is in this pack and she's in danger. I have already called for our army to retreat” my twin brother said and I quickly turned to look at him, shocked.

“Brother, you mean to tell me you are giving up when we are so close to victory over your mate? And you didn't even think to discuss this with me!”

“Common brother, you won't understand the feeling, okay? I'm so scared we may have killed a friend or relative of hers, or worse, her parents. I'll spend the rest of my life in misery. But you won't understand, you have not inhaled that scent before, it'll change your life” he replied, pushing himself farther.

“Well, just so you know, I actually have. I simply ignored it. I'm not like you that is consumed by unnecessary, meager emotions. In fact, the only reason I'm going to rescue her from the murderous Alpha in front of us is to ensure I don't get plunged into depression like Mom if he succeeds in killing her. I mistakenly hinted at her direction and he has been running in her direction” I replied as we all got to a wall and halted, looking at the Alpha as he stood there, almost as if he was guarding something.

I looked at him as he quickly shifted into his human form, to talk to us I presume

“Look, I understand we have had our differences but I am willing to negotiate with you if you can please spare her life. I've just met her and even though some things are not adding up, I want to keep her, I already feel a connection to her. Just say what you want in exchange, I'll give you” he said, panting.

I looked at my brother in confusion. We shifted to our human forms as well.

“Alpha Kane, we are a little bit confused here. You see, my mate is actually somewhere in the direction you stand. I can't figure out how but that is what I'm here for.”

“Mine too. Maybe they are all in the same place. Weird” I commented.

“No, that is not possible. My mate is the only person here. I didn't put her with the rest of the pack. Here” he said and pushed the strange door open and a beautiful woman came out.

Together, I and my twin uttered a word that shocked the hell out of us all

“Mate”

"You guys and that damned word," she grumbled from her hiding place and I couldn't help the smile that spread across my face.
