Chapter 4 A Battle of Equals

Just when I thought I had no choice but to swallow it, Jane unexpectedly walked in.

John's eyes were still on me. I swallowed a pill in front of him, which finally made him smile with relief. He then turned his attention to Jane and got up to take the tray from her.

As he stood up to take the tray, his tall frame blocked Jane's view. I quickly hid the remaining pills in the blanket covering me.

Then I swiftly brought the water cup to my mouth, pretending to swallow the pills, and feigned a pained expression as if I had just taken the medication.

In reality, I had spit the pill I had just taken back into the bowl, making it look like it was just the residue at the bottom.

Meanwhile, John had already taken the tray and turned around.

I pulled the blanket off me, piled it to the side, and handed the water cup to Jane, saying, "I'll take it myself!"

John looked at me approvingly, placed the tray on the bedside table, and didn't forget to plant a kiss on my forehead. He then picked up the bowl, intending to feed me.

I pretended to blush and pushed him away, "You should get to work!"

John smiled gracefully and pinched my gaunt face. He said gently, "Alright, I'll go to work now! Eat your meal and rest well. I'll try to come back early to be with you and Mason!"

"Okay!" I looked at him, deliberately showing a reluctant expression, advising, "You should go now! Come back early tonight!"

In truth, I was afraid he would reach out and straighten the blanket beside me.

He left without making any eye contact with Jane.

The room was now just Jane and me. "Jane, is Mason still asleep?" I subtly reminded her, hoping to send her away.

Jane replied, "I'll go check. You eat slowly, and call me if you need anything!" She turned and left.

Listening to her footsteps gradually fade, I forced myself to take a bite of food. Then, I returned to bed, pulled the blanket over me, and placed the tray on top, slowly eating.

In fact, I had no appetite at all. I was trembling with nervousness, but I still slowly put food into my mouth.

First, I had to eat to maintain my strength from now on. Second, I was being cautious, as there might be surveillance in this room.

Previously, for safety reasons, I had installed surveillance cameras in every room. After seeing too many bad things, I had to be cautious.

Unexpectedly, it now restricted my actions. John had protested about the surveillance in this room, joking that we had no privacy and that our lovemaking would be recorded and could be leaked.

But I insisted that I would only turn on the cameras when I wasn't in the room or during specific times.

Over time, the surveillance in this room was rarely turned on.

But I wasn't sure if the surveillance was on now.

After eating, I took the opportunity to tidy up the blanket and flushed the hidden pills down the toilet.

I played with Mason for a while, then pretended to be exhausted and lay back in bed, continuing to feign sleep.

I didn't notice anything unusual about them, and I couldn't let them notice anything unusual about me.

Honestly, apart from Jane's perfume, I didn't notice anything wrong. And that perfume had many reasonable explanations.

But pretending to sleep was really painful. To make it convincing, I didn't dare move, kept my eyes closed, and kept thinking about all the possibilities and my next steps.

My nerves were highly tense, and the fear that came from deep inside made me extremely alert. But maintaining this sleeping posture was truly unbearable.

At that moment, I realized that being awake was scarier than being unconscious.

Maybe it was because I hadn't slept all night or the exhaustion from being overly tense, combined with my already weak body, that caused me to eventually fall asleep.

But just as I was deeply asleep, my sensitive nerves told me that someone was approaching me.
