Chapter 3 I Accidentally Got Married
The staff looked at Charles as though he were an idiot. "You're taking marriage too lightly!"
"I mistook the person! The one I'm supposed to marry isn't her!" Charles's voice grew increasingly low and tense.
Luna stared at his perfectly sculpted profile for a moment before laughing in exasperation. "Sir, do you even know who you're marrying?" she scoffed.
Luna couldn’t believe him and thought, 'Isn’t he just messing with me?'
It dawned on her that he wasn’t a colleague sent by her superiors to assist her. She’d been too eager to shake off the suspect and had made a rash decision.
Charles took a deep breath, trying to suppress his anger as he looked at Luna. "And what about you?"
At this point, Charles saw Luna as a gold-digger who knew his identity. 'Otherwise, how could it be such a coincidence that she was dressed exactly as Mother described?' he thought.
Luna couldn't reveal her mission, which only confirmed Charles's suspicions. He decided that no matter the cost, he had to extricate himself from her as soon as possible. He never wanted to see this woman again.
"Get me the divorce papers!" he demanded.
The staff, caught in an awkward position, replied, "Sir, there's a one-month cooling-off period for divorces."
Charles, wrapped in anger, gritted his teeth and said, "But I'm a VIP."
The staff said, "VIPs only skip the line when getting a marriage certificate, not for divorces. The system can't be changed."
Luna was astounded. 'A month? Does this mean I’m now a married woman?' she thought in shock.
Just as Luna grappled with this revelation, she spotted the suspect walking toward them. Quickly grabbing Charles's arm and whispering under his warning gaze, she said, "I'm on a mission. The target is at your eight o'clock. Please cooperate."
Charles tried to pull his arm away, but Luna, with her training from the police academy, managed to hold on. For the first time, he couldn’t break free. By the time he tried again, the suspect had already left.
Luna let out a long breath and released Charles.
"Luna! Do you copy? What's your status? The colleague sent to assist you is already at the Civil Affairs Office entrance," her superior's voice came through the earpiece.
Luna covered her ear and said in a low voice, "Joah Hotch, the suspect just left. Have the colleague follow him directly; no need to wait for me!"
"Copy that! You should leave as soon as possible."
"I can't leave right now."
"What's wrong? Are you injured?" Joah's voice turned tense.
Luna looked frustrated as she replied, "I accidentally got married just now."
Joah Hotch fell silent before yelling from the other side. "Luna Brown! Are you kidding me? Get back here in five minutes!"
Joah naturally didn't believe Luna, and Luna needed time to explain to him, so she had to agree for now.
While she spoke into the earpiece, Charles’s patience was wearing thin. "Are you done with your act?" he asked, looming over her like a tall, imposing wall.
Luna pulled out her police badge and held it up to him. "I really am a cop!" she said, briefly explaining how she had mistaken him for a colleague.
Charles looked at the badge, still skeptical, but she didn’t seem the type to impersonate an officer. "You..."
"I need to go back and explain! You can keep the marriage certificate for now. Give me your phone number, and I'll contact you later to sort this out!" Luna said, urgency in her voice.
Charles hesitated but realized he needed her cooperation for the divorce. He handed her a private number.
Luna noted it down and ran off, leaving Charles alone in the VIP area to digest the day's unexpected events.
