Chapter 6 I Am Your Husband
After returning to the company from the County Clerk's Office, Charles immediately threw himself into his work.
The moment he got there, he called for a meeting. But oddly enough, he didn't catch a single word of what his employees were saying.
His mind was racing, filled with thoughts about Luna and the Joah she mentioned. This scam group had even targeted him. He couldn't figure out if it was all planned or just a spur-of-the-moment thing.
Charles checked his watch. The meeting had been dragging on for an hour, and by now, Max Carter, his assistant, should have finished conducting the background check.
Charles was dying to know more about Luna.
Everyone could tell Charles was distracted.
But since he was always so serious, and today he looked even sterner, no one dared to ask him anything. As soon as the meeting ended, everyone bolted out of there.
"Mr. Lee, here's what I found," Max said, handing over a file as the meeting wrapped up.
Charles opened the file and frowned at Luna's photo. "So, she really is a cop."
As the head of the Lee Group, Charles had been raised with strict discipline since he was a kid.
He had decided to dedicate his life to the Lee family, even if it meant giving up his own marriage and love.
Charles had no plans to get married and didn't want a woman messing up his life.
In the future, he only planned to pick a suitable heir from his siblings' kids.
If it weren't for Ashley's pressure, he would never have caved in, nor would he be in this mess today.
Charles said, "Get in touch with her and set up a meeting."
Max nodded and was about to contact Luna, but Charles changed his mind. "I'll do it myself. You can go."
Having his assistant handle personal stuff would blow his cover as a wealthy guy.
Even when he agreed to marry Anna at Ashley's request, he didn't let Ashley reveal his true identity.
He just said he was a coffee shop owner with a house and a car, not a rich guy.
He still needed to be careful. He was afraid that if Luna knew who he really was, she might ask for a hefty fee for the divorce.
He pulled out his phone and dialed the number Luna left.
The phone rang a few times before it was hung up.
Charles was stunned. Luna actually dared to hang up on him. Interesting, very impressive.
Luna was indeed after his money and had no intention of divorcing him.
So he called again, but it was hung up again. He called once more.
"Do you know that harassing a police officer is very unwise?" Luna sounded particularly annoyed on the other end.
"Do you remember that your husband wants to divorce you?" Charles said through gritted teeth.
Luna was just too annoying, treating his call like a harassment call.
She was swamped with a pile of documents.
After finishing her mission, she went back to the team to wait for orders and organized past documents as required.
The criminal division's documents were a mess, and it took her the whole afternoon just to sort them out.
Once she got busy, she forgot about the morning's marriage to Charles and even forgot she now had a husband.
"Sorry, I really forgot because I was busy," Luna apologized.
"Let's meet tonight and clear this up," Charles suppressed his anger and spoke calmly.
On Luna's end, Joah's call suddenly came in, and she hurriedly said, "No problem, I'll send you the time and place."
Then she hung up.
Listening to the sound of the call ending, Charles gripped his phone tighter.
He was a bit furious that she dared to hang up on him again.
