“Mom!” I grumbled.

I can't believe she said yes to that idiot Kayler driving me to school. I honestly can't believe it. She just shrugged and went to open the door. I stood there, arms crossed, glaring. The front door opened, revealing a smiling Kayler, as always, with that air of arrogance.

“Kayler, dear, come in.” I shot my mom a dirty look when she called him "dear." Oh, God.

“Good morning, ma'am,” he smiled slightly.

He was wearing black jeans, a shirt that clung nicely to his body, and a black leather jacket. His hair was, as always, messy, making him look even sexier than usual. How could he be so good-looking?

“I'm not going to school with him,” I replied, not taking my eyes off Kayler.

He just looked at me playfully and winked.

“Come on, Carolina, you don't want to walk, do you?” he questioned. “We don't know what kind of animals are in the forest. Besides, I feel safer if you go with Kaylersito.”

I almost laughed at "Kaylersito." Kayler looked amused too. And yes, there are animals... wild ones, to be exact. Thinking about how I almost died last night, but thanks to that wolf that took pity on my poor life, I'm still alive. Although, honestly, I wouldn't want to see it again.

I thought it over a bit. If I arrive at school with Kayler, all eyes will be on us, and honestly, I don't like drawing attention. I can't imagine how Paige will react if she sees us together. I don't want more problems. But I don't want to go alone either, maybe I'll ask him to drop me off a bit before we get to school. Yes, I think that will help.

The two people in front of me were waiting for my response.

“Okay.”

Mom smiled, and so did Kayler.

I adjusted my backpack on my shoulder and headed toward the car. I sat in the passenger seat while Kayler sat next to me, starting the car.

“First and last time I'm going with you to school,” I snapped.

He began to accelerate.

“If you say so...” he murmured.

I looked at him.

“I only agreed to go with you because I didn't want to go alone. I'm afraid the...,” I stopped abruptly.

I can't tell him that yesterday I was almost killed by four wolves and that one let me go. Yes, it sounds crazy. He'll think I'm nuts.

He frowned.

“The what?” he questioned.

I shook my head.

“Nothing. Forget it.”

I turned my gaze forward, but I felt Kayler's eyes on me. Then he stopped the car and turned it off.

I glared at him.

“Hey, what...?”

“Tell me. There's something you've seen... You can trust me.” He looked at me with those honey-colored eyes.

I realized he had leaned toward me, and we were very close. I could feel his breath on my face. And damn, it felt good.

“I almost died yesterday.”

I confessed. At first, he clenched his jaw tightly as if angry, but then he calmed down.

“What are you talking about?” he inquired with a frown.

Kayler has lived here all his life, and I don't think he hasn't seen a single wolf. Not even heard a howl, at least.

“There are wolves in this forest, and yesterday four almost killed me. If it wasn't for another wolf, I wouldn't be alive. I can't say I thank it because I don't know if it was just preserving me and will come after me later,” I said all at once.

Kayler just stayed thoughtful and... angry? He looked at me with... pity?

I crossed my arms, frustrated. He didn't respond, but then he laughed in my face.

“What are you laughing at?”

I know Kayler is arrogant, a bit superficial, but come on! I don't think he'd be happy about someone else's misfortune.

His smile faded a bit.

“I'm sorry... But wolves? And one let you go?” he questioned mockingly. “Stop watching so many movies, will you?”

He started the car and drove off.

“By the way, we're having a party at my house tomorrow. You're invited.”

I looked at him, puzzled. Did he invite me to his party? If so, I'm not going. I'd rather stay home watching movies. After what happened last night, I don't plan to leave my house... for a long time.

“Oh, my God, the great Kayler Brown invited me to his party,” I mocked, amused. Then I laughed, and he just looked at me, bored. “I don't think I can go,” I said finally.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw him look at me again.

“Of course, you'll go,” he murmured confidently.

Who does he think he is?

“Why are you having a party? Any special reason?” I questioned, raising an eyebrow.

“No. We have a party almost every weekend,” he winked. “For fun.”

I rolled my eyes. How could I not have guessed?

Minutes later, we were arriving in town, almost at the school. I need to get out before we get there.

“Drop me off before we get there. I want to arrive alone,” I emphasized.

He gave me a quick glance.

“No way. You're arriving with me, period,” he snapped.

“Kayler!”

He shook his head.

Damn it.

“Why are you doing this?” I inquired.

He stopped the car again and got out, leaving his door open. He opened mine and made me look into his eyes, very close. His touch on my cheeks was warm, very warm, but I liked it.

“Because you’re mine.”
