Chapter 6

Abigail, being a woman, instinctively reached out and grabbed Susan's hand when she saw James's fierce demeanor.

Susan glanced at the panicked Abigail, then at the gravely ill David. She glared at James and snapped, "If you mess around again, I'll call the cops and tell them you caused Grandpa Wilson's death! Then I'll call the newspapers and tell them, 'Retired Military Man Angered to Death by His Son Over Inheritance.' That'll definitely get some attention!"

James had no authority over Susan. He'd never been a real father to her. When the family was struggling, Susan once asked him for money, and he not only refused but slapped her.

But James had always spoiled Amelia. Susan had long sworn she'd never acknowledge him as her father again.

Susan's words left James and his group stunned.

James's eyes shifted to David lying on the hospital bed, and he hesitated.

Seeing this, Sophia chimed in , "Susan, stop scaring us! James, teach her a lesson!"

Susan's eyes flickered, and she quickly pulled out her phone, pretending to dial. "Hello, police?"

"Give me that phone!" James lunged at her in a rage.

Susan dodged and ran to the other side of the bed. Abigail quickly stepped in to block James.

"James, if you don't leave now, I'll tell the newspapers you're insurance agents. Let's see who buys insurance from you then!" Abigail threatened.

James and Sophia exchanged glances. They knew staying would only bring more trouble.

Sophia, trying to save face, said, "I'm tired today. I'll deal with you another day!"

With that empty threat, she hurried out.

James and Amelia followed her out.

Once they were gone, Susan finally exhaled in relief. If a fight had broken out, she and Abigail would have been at a disadvantage.

Abigail squeezed Susan's hand. "Thank goodness you came today. Charles and I would've been bullied by them."

Susan opened her mouth to respond, but a sudden pain in her lower abdomen made her gasp, her face turning pale.

"Susan, what's wrong?"

"Nothing, just feeling a bit unwell." Sweat was already forming on Susan's forehead.

"You should go rest. Charles and I can stay here," Abigail urged.

"Alright, I'll go." Susan left the ward.

As soon as she stepped out, she had to support herself against the wall. The pain in her lower abdomen was excruciating.

'Did I hurt myself when my stomach hit the bed rail earlier?' she wondered.

Susan thought resting would help, but the pain persisted. Realizing something was wrong, she struggled to walk to the emergency department.

After a series of tests, Susan lay on a hospital bed, her face pale. She looked at the female doctor and urgently asked, "Doctor, I got hit earlier. Did I hurt something?"

The doctor, while writing in her notes, replied, "You're fine, but the baby has some issues and needs to be hospitalized for observation."

"What baby?" Susan was stunned. She didn't even know she was pregnant.
