Chapter 8

Flashback at the Hospital…

The office was dead silent as they waited for his response. Alexander Kane finally looked up, his expression impassive. "Excuse us," he said.

Lily Evans nodded and left the office, sitting outside to wait.

"Why not run a test on her first? Isn't there a quicker way to know if she could conceive with IVF or the normal method?" asked Alexander.

"We have to proceed with IVF to determine that. Medical research and technology haven't advanced to that level yet," the doctor replied.

"Why not just go through with the normal method? I know how much you never wanted to get married or be with a woman, but you've used them to satisfy your carnal desires before. Just regard this as another such instance," suggested Alexander, his tone serious.

Alexander's face darkened. "Just do what needs to be done," he said curtly.

Seeing this, the doctor raised his hand in defeat. Alexander stood up and headed out, with the doctor following closely behind. Lily stood up as she saw Alexander come out of the office.

"It was nice meeting you, Miss Evans. It's unfortunate we can't go on that date anymore, but we can still have casual outings as friends," the doctor said with a smile.

Lily returned the smile. "Nice meeting you too. You can just call me Lily."

Alexander walked away, heading to the elevator. "Have a nice day, Lily," the doctor said.

Lily nodded before following Alexander. Alexander was ahead, so she couldn’t catch up and only met him in the garage, already sitting in the back seat of the car waiting for her. She walked to him, making him raise his head and look at her. "What are you standing there for? Get in; I do not have all day."

"I will get to work from here; you can leave without me," Lily said.

"I will drop you off," Alexander replied.

He was really going to drop her off? Lily was surprised. "You don't have to drop me off; I will—"

"I thought I told you earlier that I don't like repeating myself. Now get in," Alexander said, his tone authoritative.

As much as she hated his domineering attitude, now was not the time to argue with him. Things would change between them as time went by, and she would make sure of that. She got into the car and was silent as it rode to the other side of the city. She had wondered how the driver knew where her coffee shop was until she remembered that Alexander had all her basic information.

Halfway on the road, he suddenly spoke, which took her by surprise. "So you really wanted to go out on a date?"

"Huh?" She did not know what he was talking about.

Alexander gave her a cold look. "Miss Evans, I didn't know you had a bad memory. I also didn't know you loved to smile wide at cheap compliments and easily got wooed like other cheap women out there."

Lily frowned at his insult and clenched her fists. "I don't—"

"Save it!" he shushed her before she could say a complete sentence.

When she saw the look on his face, she didn’t dare say a word but tried to think about what he meant. When she remembered the doctor’s compliment, which she knew was a joke, she understood that was what he was referring to. He just called her cheap, which made her heart sour.

The moment the car stopped in front of her coffee shop, she stepped out immediately and walked to her shop, sighing in relief for escaping a man with such a vile tongue. Alexander watched as she walked away and looked at the coffee shop she owned. He then looked at the environment the shop was in.

"Where to next, boss?" the driver asked.

"Head to the company," Alexander replied.

"Right away, boss."

Lily watched from the window as the car drove away. "Woooo, who was that?" Maria, who was standing at her back, asked.

Lily turned to her and smiled. "Guess."

"I know you are hiding from your family for now, and you are keeping it low, so I can't guess who this is," Maria said.

Maria was the close friend and family Lily made after running away from those who wanted her dead, and she was the only person apart from Jacob who knew her real identity. "It's Alexander Kane," Lily said.

Maria’s mouth was wide open. "That is a joke, right? You mean to tell me that the almighty cold-hearted youngest billionaire, whom you had said you liked and who dislikes women, dropped you off? I can't believe this!"

"It's the truth," Lily said.

Maria was too surprised. "How come?"

Lily told her everything, and by the time she was done, Maria could not believe her ears. "No way, I can't believe this; you have to show me some kind of proof."

Lily brought out her phone and showed her photos of the wedding certificate. She knew Maria would ask for evidence, which was why she came with evidence. "It's really true; this is just too crazy, Lily. What if he doesn't end up loving you and your kid ends up not having a complete family?" Maria went on and on with worry.

Lily smiled and said, "When I set my mind on something, I will achieve it."

Maria sighed and held her hand. "Won't this marriage and having a baby distract you from seeking justice for the deaths of your sisters?"

"Never. My primary focus is still to find evidence for my sister's death and make sure the people involved all spend the rest of their lives in prison," Lily said.

Maria nodded and didn't say anything more after seeing her determination. Lily returned to the mansion that evening after working all day in the coffee shop. When she got inside the house, she was about to head upstairs to her room when Clara approached her.

"Welcome back, ma'am," Clara said.

Ma'am? Lily was surprised by the new honorifics. Just yesterday she was called Miss Evans by everyone in the house, so what changed?

"Thank you, Clara."

"What will you be having for dinner, ma'am?" Clara asked.

"I already had dinner, so I will be retiring for the night," Lily replied.

"Okay, ma'am. Oh, before I forget, ma'am."

"What is it?" Lily asked.

"Mr. Kane had instructed us to move your things to his bedroom."

"His bedroom?" Lily was shocked.

"Yes, ma'am, he had called earlier in the day, and now we have already moved your things to his bedroom," Clara said.
