Chapter Five: Shadows and Secrets

Olivia POV

Emily was engrossed in a book, when I entered her room, I felt a sense of relief at the sight of being around her. When she looked up and saw me she smiled which made my heart melt. I needed to stay focused, for her sake and mine.

“Olivia, look at what I drew” Emily exclaimed, holding up a drawing she has been working on.

I forced a smile. “Wow, It’s beautiful, Emily. You’re so talented.”

She smiled at the praise, and for a moment, the weight of my mission felt lighter.

I felt someone watching me from a distance and when I looked up, I noticed a shadow outside the window. I was tensed for a moment, but i quickly composed myself, not wanting to alarm Emily.

“Emily, how about we go to the garden to play for a moment” I suggested.

When she agreed, she followed me to the garden, As we played, I couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched. I kept a vigilant eye on our surroundings. But most importantly I needed to speak with Marcus again, to figure out our next move.

Davis POV

Rebecca’s findings were disturbing. The funds that was transferred to an unknown account was sophisticated, but what stood out was the timing. And it seems connected to Olivia’s arrival.

This time around I decided to take matters into my hands, by activating a hidden CCTV system in the mansion, that even Rebecca wasn’t aware of. If Olivia was hiding something, this would definitely reveal it.

As I monitored the feeds, I saw Olivia leading Emily into the garden. She was calm for a moment, but her eyes were constantly scanning the area. She was restless and that confirmed my suspicions. I have to confront her but needed the right time to do so.

Olivia POV

In the evening, after reading Emily's bed time story and putting her to bed, I slipped carefully out of the mansion to meet Marcus. We decided to use, an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city.

Marcus was already there, his face filled with worry. “Olivia, I’ve been digging into the offshore account breach, and It’s worse than what we imagined”

“What do you mean, worse than what we imagined” I asked, as my heart almost skipped a beat.

“Whoever is framing us, did this and left a trail. A deliberate one. It’s like they want us to find them” Marcus explained, his voice grim.

My mind raced. “What if it’s a trap, Someone’s trying to set us up.”

Marcus nodded. “That was what I was thinking. We need to find out who really is behind all of this as fast as possible”

Almost immediately, we heard a sound of footsteps echoing through the warehouse. We both turned, and Marcus removed his gun pointing to the direction and to our greatest surprise, Davis stepped out of the shadows, his expression cold and determined.

“Marcus, Olivia. I should’ve known,” Davis said, his voice low but menacing.

My heart sank and all I could pray for was that the ground should open and swallow Marcus and I. “Davis, it’s not what you think”

“Isn’t it, what do you want me to think” he asked, moving closer. “I trusted you, Olivia. And you must be Marcus. You and Olivia have been working against me this whole time.”

“Davis, listen to me,” I pleaded. “We’re being set up. Someone’s trying to frame us”

He laughed bitterly. “Do you really think I will believe you just like that"

“ Davis, think about it” Marcus interjected. “Why would we leave such an obvious trail, We’re being framed, we know nothing about your funds”

Davis’s eyes narrowed, but a flicker of doubt crossed his face. “Prove it.”

Davis POV

As I listened to Olivia and Marcus desperate explanation. As much as I wanted to dismiss their claims, something about their story sounds true. But I needed more than words.

“Fine” I said, my voice hard. “You have one chance to prove your innocence. Find the real culprit, and I might consider trusting you again.”

Olivia nodded, determination in her eyes. “We’ll find them, Davis. I promise.”

I left the warehouse, with a whirlwind of emotions. Trust was a fragile thing, and Olivia had shattered it. But even if there was a chance that they were telling the truth, I have to know.

Olivia POV

The next few days was full of covert meetings and frantic investigations. Marcus and I followed every lead, uncovering a web of deceit that pointed to a single name, Vincent Black, a former associate of Davis’s who had a grudge against him.

Vincent had been stealing funds for years, covering his tracks with meticulous care. But now, he had made a fatal mistake. In his quest for revenge, he had underestimated us.

With the evidence in hand, Marcus and I presented our findings to Davis. He listened in silence, his expression unreadable.

When we finished, he sat back, his gaze fixed on us. “You’ve done well. But this isn’t over. We need to bring Vincent down.”

I nodded, relief flooding through me. “We will”

In a dim lit office, Vincent Black is seen watching the events unfold through a hidden camera feed. A sinister smile spread across his face, as he continued scratching the leather chair.

Vincent POV

“They think they’ve won” I muttered to myself. “But the real game is just about to begin”

He reached for his phone, dialing a number. “It’s time to execute the final phase. Make sure there are no loose ends, are we clear?”

As I ended the call, his smile widened. The pieces were moving into place, and soon, I would have my revenge.

The next morning, chaos erupted at Steele Corporation. An anonymous tip had brought the authorities, and Vincent’s crimes was exposed. But as Davis, Olivia, and Marcus celebrated their victory, a new threat emerged from the shadows.

Vincent’s plan had only just begun, and the true extent of his machinations would soon be revealed.
