Chapter 5: Breathe, Just Breathe

Nadine Black's POV:

Andrew looked down at me, finally letting go of my arm as I stood on the sidewalk outside the courthouse's door. I scrunched my face when I looked down for a moment, and thought to myself that something must be wrong. He's not usually like this towards me. What could have happened while I was inside? I didn't say anything as I started to walk out in front of him.

Suddenly, Andrew reached into his inner pocket and pulled out his phone. He followed me as I looked ahead and noticed that Mathis was waiting there with the vehicle running and ready to depart as soon as we loaded up. When I reached the end of the sidewalk, Mathis stepped closer when he went for my door handle and spoke.

"I do trust your trip was a successful one?" Mathis asked when he opened the side door and waited for me to get in.

I flattened my lips, pressing them together as I stepped on the side rail and climbed into the back seat. On the other hand, Andrew walked around and took his position in the driver's seat when he climbed in and sat down next. Mathis didn't say anything else to me when I didn't respond to him, but closed the door and climbed into the front seat so we could be on our way.

I sat there and thought about everything that had just happened. No one said anything for a few minutes as we traveled down the road. At least this could leave me to my thoughts. When Mathis turned to face me, he looked at my seat belt as I sat in the middle. So, after I fastened it, Andrew placed the vehicle in drive and pulled away from the curb.

As we headed to Shane's place, I wondered about the next appointment that Andrew mentioned earlier. As we made our way down the road, I turned to the side and looked out the window, wondering what was going to happen next with the events that occurred while I was at the courthouse. Was I going to be caught up in all of this? I dismissed my thoughts as everything would happen when it was meant to.

Before too long, Andrew pulled up at the curb at Shane's place, and Mathis got out to get my door. I shook my head lightly as I thought I heard something in the distance, but dismissed it just as easily. However, everything changed when my feet landed on the curb. The sounds of the sirens were getting closer by the sound of them, which could only mean one thing. I took another step out onto the grass when I looked at Mathis.

We both shared a look before turning to look in the far-off distance. We knew what we heard, and it could only mean one thing. Mathis then walked to the open door, grabbed the side of the frame, and looked directly at Andrew, still sitting in the driver's seat.

Andrew turned around, looking fiercely at me, and commanded, "Get your business handled and get out of there! The cops are coming this way. Quickly rush in there and tell Shane to get his ass out! Hurry!"

I pushed past Mathis, ran straight through the gate, right up to the front door, and burst inside when I shouted, "The cops are coming!"

Shane was in the front room when he turned to face me, yelling, "What?!"

When I took in the scene before me, he was standing there, and lying at his feet was Kelly Anne. What the fuck was going on now?! Why was she lying there on the floor in front of him? He turned to face her with a hateful look on his face, sneering when Shane looked back at me.

"How's that possible?" Shane yelled.

"How the Hell should I know?" I yelled at him in return.

I remember what happened when they ran his name through the system, I thought to myself. I was going over everything in my mind right before Andrew walked up to me. I could not believe she tried to file for divorce from my brother. Then, when I spoke next, I looked down at Kelly Anne.

"They must have called right after she left. You do have warrants for forced entry, assault and battery, and domestic abuse, Shane. What did you expect would happen?" I yelled at him in return.

I wasn't sure what Shane would do next, but he started to pace back and forth momentarily, as Andrew was standing by the door behind me. Mathis was still by the vehicle. There was no doubt now that the cops were indeed coming here. We could all hear the sirens getting closer. There was one thing the police knew about. They would not cross Damian, but Shane was apparently fair game in their book.

I looked at her lying there, trying to curl up on the floor, as Shane walked back over to her and looked at her, full of hatred. "If I'm going to go, then I should go out in style!"

Shane told her harshly when he reared his leg back and kicked her full-on in the face. I jumped back, shocked, when suddenly, Andrew grabbed me by my shoulders and spun me around, nearly causing me to jump out of my skin again.

"We are leaving! Now!" Andrew said, picking me up and throwing me over his shoulder as he headed out the door.

He walked quickly back to the vehicle and practically threw me on the back seat as he jumped in right behind me. This time, I was shocked to see Mathis at the wheel, and he floored it even though the door was still partly open. Andrew sat up and shut the door as Mathis peeled rubber, taking off down the road just in time before the cops came to a screeching halt.

I gasped for breath as I sat up, and Andrew reached across me, fastening my seatbelt this time. He placed his hand on the back of the seat and saw we were down the road before the cops had a chance to get out of their vehicles. When I finally turned around to see where we were, we were long gone down the road and around the corner before they could get out of their vehicles.

"What the Hell were you doing in there?" Andrew harped at me sharply.

I was shocked that I couldn't speak. I didn't know what to say. Breathe, just breathe.
