Unsual Proposal
Charlotte
Upon returning to the office after the business trip, I feel a new confidence in myself. The trip with Richard was intense, but it also showed me that I can handle the pressure and earn his respect. However, I know there is still much to prove and many challenges ahead.
I arrive at the office on Monday morning to find a stack of documents waiting for me. I take a deep breath and begin organizing my day, prioritizing the most urgent tasks. Sarah passes by my desk and gives me an encouraging smile.
"You're doing very well, Charlotte. Keep it up," she says.
"Thank you, Sarah," I reply, appreciating her support.
Shortly after, Richard enters the office. He gives me a brief look and nods his head, a subtle gesture of acknowledgment. It's a small step forward, but it means a lot to me.
A few days pass, and the office routine remains intense. Richard is as demanding as ever, but I notice that he starts to trust me more. He gives me more responsibilities and involves me in important meetings. Gradually, I feel like I am making progress.
One afternoon, Richard calls me into his office. He is standing, looking out the window, with a pensive expression.
"Charlotte, come in," he says without turning around.
I close the door behind me and wait for him to continue.
"We are working on a new project that could change the direction of the company. I need you to be my main assistant on this. It will be a big challenge, but I believe you are ready for it."
My heart races. It's an incredible opportunity, but also a huge responsibility. "Of course, Richard. I'm ready for the challenge."
He turns to face me, his eyes evaluating my reaction. "Great. We'll start with a planning meeting tomorrow morning. I want you to prepare all the materials and be ready to take detailed notes."
"Understood," I say, trying to hide my excitement.
In the following days, I work diligently to ensure everything is ready for the new project. Richard and I spend hours in meetings, discussing strategies and outlining the next steps. The pressure is immense, but I feel that I am growing every day.
During one of these meetings, Richard pauses and looks at me with a look that mixes exhaustion and something else I can't identify.
"Charlotte, you have been a great help. I couldn't do this without you," he says, his voice softer than usual.
I feel warmth spread through my chest. "Thank you, Richard. That means a lot to me."
He hesitates for a moment, as if struggling to find the right words. "Sometimes I wonder how you manage to handle all of this. The pressure, the expectations... It's admirable."
I smile timidly. "I think it's a combination of determination and support. And, of course, the desire to prove that I am capable."
He nods slowly, as if processing my words. "Well, you are doing an excellent job. Keep it up."
Weeks pass, and the project progresses. Richard and I work together more harmoniously, and the tension between us gradually diminishes. Collaboration becomes easier, and I feel that we are beginning to form an effective team.
One night, after a long day of work, Richard suggests we have dinner again to discuss the next steps of the project. I accept, eager to show my dedication and willingness.
Sitting at the restaurant table, the atmosphere is initially formal, but soon becomes more relaxed. Richard shares more stories about his career, and I realize that he is starting to trust me not only as an assistant but also as a confidant.
"Charlotte, tell me more about your life outside of work. What do you like to do?" he asks, with a genuinely curious look.
I take a moment to think before responding. "Well, I love fashion, of course, but I also enjoy reading and cooking. It's a way to relax and unwind."
Richard smiles. "Interesting. I also enjoy cooking, although I don't have much time for it. Maybe one day we can share some recipes."
I smile back, surprised by the offer. "I would love that."
The conversation flows naturally, and for the first time, I feel like we are really getting to know each other. Richard shares more about his personal life, his ambitions, and even some regrets. It's a rare and vulnerable side of him that I never imagined seeing.
Then, as the conversation continues, Richard pauses, seeming to gather courage for something.
"Charlotte, there's something I need to discuss with you," he says, his voice serious but gentle.
My heart races. "Of course, Richard. What is it?"
He hesitates for a moment, choosing his words carefully. "I've always wanted to have children, but with my schedule and professional life, I've never found the right person or the right time. And recently, I've received news that has made me reconsider my priorities."
I am surprised by the revelation and a bit unsettled by the direction the conversation is taking. "I understand. That's something very important and personal."
He nods, looking directly into my eyes. "I know this may seem strange, but I would like to make an unusual proposal to you."
My heart quickens, a mix of curiosity and apprehension. "What kind of proposal, Richard?"
He takes a deep breath before continuing. "Charlotte, I would like to propose a contract marriage and surrogacy. Recently, I was diagnosed with a medical condition that may make it difficult to have children in the future. I know it's a big decision, but I'm willing to pay off all your debts and ensure that you and the child are financially secure."
I am stunned, speechless for a moment. "This is... a very unexpected proposal, Richard."
He continues, his voice calm and steady. "I understand that this is a lot to take in, and I don't expect an immediate answer. Just think about it. I believe you would be an incredible mother, and I want to be present in my child's life, even with my responsibilities."
I feel torn between gratitude for the trust he places in me and the enormity of what he is asking.
"I... don't know what to say," I finally respond. "It's a very big decision, Richard. I need time to think."
"Of course," he says with a small smile. "Take all the time you need. Just know that my offer is serious and that I'm here to answer any questions you may have."
As we return to the hotel, the silence between us is thick with unspoken thoughts. I feel that we are on the brink of a significant change, something that could redefine not only our professional lives but also our personal lives.
As I climb to my room, my mind is filled with doubts and possibilities. Richard's proposal is tempting and frightening at the same time. I know I need to carefully consider all the implications before making any decision.
Lying in bed, I stare at the ceiling, trying to process everything that happened. The mutual trust and respect we have developed could withstand such a drastic change? And more importantly, am I ready for such a big responsibility?
I close my eyes, knowing that the answer will not come easily. But one thing is certain: my life will never be the same, regardless of the decision I make.
