Chapter 6

The nurse's words were dripping with frustration and anger. "If you ain't gonna go through with the surgery, take him outta here. Leaving him in our hospital is just hogging public resources."

This nurse had just pocketed her cash.

When she took the money, she was all smiles, but in just four hours, her attitude had gone south. This was hypocrisy of human nature.

But she didn't have time to point fingers. She knew no one would help a stranger without getting something in return.

Worried Nancy might get mistreated, she had to lie smoothly. "I'll pay up by evening."

The nurse's tone got all excited. "For real?"

Margaret said, "Yeah."

She hung up and dialed Raymond, wanting him to come home to talk about the divorce.

Her only card left was negotiating the divorce terms with Raymond.

How crazy that a measly million bucks was the final nail in the coffin of their marriage.

She hit up a print shop on the street, reprinted a divorce agreement, tweaked the terms, and then drove to The Hughes Group.

Raymond was all about work. He wasn't into socializing and usually pulled overtime at the office.

She picked the time right after work. The whole building was dark, except for the light in the CEO's office.

Since her fallout with Raymond, she hadn't been to The Hughes Group. It used to take up just two floors, but under Raymond's lead, it had grown to an entire building.

On the huge electronic screen of The Hughes Group building was a big photo.

The guy in the photo was her husband, Raymond.

He had a tall frame, rocking a high-end custom suit, sitting in a chair with his legs crossed, expressionless, with sharp eyes, giving off major boss vibes.

Yeah, clothes really did make the man.

When she first met Raymond, he wore a faded white shirt and ate the cheapest food.

Who would've thought that the once insecure and introverted Raymond could become so impressive one day?

Margaret didn't have time to be sad. The urgent task was to find him and borrow money to save Marlon's life.

She pushed open the door to the CEO's office.

Raymond, in a white shirt and black vest, spoke in a gentle tone, "You can leave now; don't worry about me."

Margaret was stunned. Turns out he even treated his subordinates better than he treated her.

Raymond looked up, and the moment he saw her, his expression shifted slightly. He squinted his eyes and sneered, "Weren't you gonna die before getting a divorce? And now you're asking for it before you die?"

Margaret walked in and laid it out straight, "Raymond, give me a million bucks."

Raymond wasn't too shocked by her sudden visit.

He just looked at her with sharp eyes, mocking her with his tone. "You think you're worth a million bucks?"

No one knew that while Margaret seemed calm, the hand holding the divorce agreement was trembling slightly.

Because no one knew better than her that Raymond was just a beast.

She opened the divorce agreement and placed it on his desk. "This is the revised divorce agreement."

He didn't even glance at the divorce agreement but raised his eyes to mock her, his eyes full of contempt. "What leverage do you have to negotiate with me? Margaret, you're so confident."

She replied, "Just because you like my good friend Sarah, and you wanna marry her."

Raymond still wasn't mad, his long fingers stroking his chin. He didn't say anything.

Margaret almost couldn't keep smiling. "Raymond, just give me a million bucks, and you can get rid of me."

He looked up and sneered at her, "So you care so much about Marlon."

She said, "Raymond, you should at least show basic respect to my dad. We can renegotiate the divorce terms."

Her fingers clenched into a fist, but reason told her not to lose her cool. At this critical moment, Raymond was her last hope.

She still kept her composure, her tone gentle.

As soon as she said this, he picked up the divorce agreement.

With a tearing sound, he ripped the divorce agreement into several pieces and tossed it into the trash can.
