Chapter 6

PHOEBE'S POV:-

In the morning, the first thing I did was to call my beta. Henry was shocked the moment I gave him the news. "I thought you never wanted to do this. That the king knew exactly what you were doing and that could get your mate killed by the king?" Beta Henry asked me in a low tone and I smiled.

"Yeah! I said that. Until I knew the truth. Whenever I am with my mate, it's the Moon goddess who protects us both from the king. I know if we mark each other soon, I can finally be free." I calmly replied. The excitement was rising inside my chest. Being able to live with my man and being able to live freely, that was all I wanted.

A moment later I realized, it was too quiet in my room. As if I was left alone. I turned around and found Beta Henry standing behind me. He was staring into the space between him and I and it looked like he was lost in his own thoughts. By the looks on his face, I really couldn't read what was going on in his head but I was sure about one thing. He must be very happy for me.

I snapped my fingers in front of his eyes, pulling him out of the oceans of his thoughts. He turned his gaze to my face and smiled. "If you are sure, then it's great news. When are you planning on getting marked, alpha?" Beta Henry sounded so excited for me. I couldn't help but chuckle.

"Tonight! I don't want to delay. I want to mark him and be marked by him as soon as possible. So no one will ever come between us." I added on a low tone while staring at my reflection in the mirror. After a very long time, I had a smile on my face. And I felt that smile deep into my heart as well. There was this one fear in my heart.

I was afraid of losing everything that I was about to get. I was afraid I would lose everything again. And my worst fear was being manipulated by the king. And my manipulation being the very man I was bestowed with as my mate.

Suddenly, an arm wrapped around me from behind and I was pulled into a warm embrace that brought me some peace. "You don't have to fear anything at all. Until the day I love, I will protect you from all the harm. That's my promise." Kelvin's soft whisper brought back the peace to my heart. Smiling softly, I turned around to face him. As soon as he looked at me, his jaw dropped on the ground.

It was the first time after a very long time that I had worn a dress. Last I wore a dress, it was my parents' funeral. After that, I became a warrior and later, the alpha I was expected to become for the sake of the well being of my people.

But that day, I decided to wear a purple halter mini dress. With knee high wedge boots. I curled up my platinum hair. I dressed up just to go out with him. It would be nothing. We were going to the mall to shop for our marking ceremony. And Kelvin wanted to eat somewhere outside with me. Although I didn't need any of that from him, he still insisted on taking me on a date.

"I didn't know we were dressing up all fancy. Or I would have gotten something fancy like a tuxedo or a better looking blazer for date night." My cheeks suddenly burned and I narrowed my head. I had never felt that way before. I had always been the dominating person since I could remember. I was like my father.

I turned around to look at Beta Henry. After everything, he was still standing in my room as if he had turned into a statue. He didn't say anything. He neither looked happy, nor sad. That suddenly made me conscious about everything that I was about to do. He had been my friend since we were kids. His opinion made my life.

Henry was this one person I trusted blindly. And his sealed lips were concerning me. I pulled away from Kelvin and took a step toward Beta Henry. I placed one of my hands on his shoulder to pull him out of the daze he was lost in. "Is everything alright, Henry?" I asked in a concerned tone.

My words woke him up almost instantly. He looked into my eyes and smiled. "Forgive me, alpha. I was… lost in your smile. It has been a very long time since I have seen you smile so purely and carelessly." Beta Henry spoke in a low tone as soon as he looked into my eyes.

"I am happy for you, my friend. We shall get started with the preparations. Our alpha is about to get marked. Our beloved and brave alpha has finally found her happiness." Beta Henry exclaimed while patting my shoulder. I smiled widely and nodded my head.

"You are the only family I have left. My only friend who was not killed. It means a lot to me to hear those words from you." I whispered softly, fighting my tears. Beta or friend, I just couldn't let him see my weak side. No one could ever see my weak side.

Beta Henry gave me a curt nod then he walked away. Kelvin offered me his hand. I placed my hand on his and he pulled me outside of the room.

He took me out for lunch. At first, I thought it would be at a restaurant or a cafe. But what I got was better than all of my imaginations about my first date ever. He had set the date near the riverside. It was a picnic date. "What is all this, Kelvin?" I asked him out of curiosity, though I could see it with my own eyes.

A soft whimper broke free from my lips the moment he snaked one of his arms around my waist and pulled me closer to his tall figure. "This is the very place I figured the first time that you are my mate. It's the very place where we shared our first kiss. It's special for me. And I know it's more special to you than me. That's why, I figured it is the only place in this whole world that can be the perfect spot for our first date." He was very good with his words.

It were indeed his words that changed my heart toward him, that brought my courage back and it were his words that convinced me that the Moon Goddess was the one who wanted me to have a life with my mate.

I couldn't speak. I was totally speechless as I looked around. On the side of the river, on the grass that connected the forest with the river, was placed a rug on the ground. A food basket was placed on top. With a bouquet of hand picked flowers and a small box with chocolate bites.

Excited, I turned to look at Kelvin. Without another word, he pulled me toward the picnic spot. Turns out, he woke up early in the morning and prepared lunch for both of us. It was nothing too fancy. Just the way I liked my lunch. He made us sandwiches and chicken cheese pasta.

After lunch, Kelvin laid down on the ground, both of his hands were under his head. He was staring at me. "Why are you staring at me like this?" I couldn't help myself but ask him the reason. Not that his gaze on me was making me uncomfortable in any way. But I knew I was blushing because I could feel the tingles on my cheeks and the tip of my nose.

Kelvin pulled one of his hands out and grabbed one of my platinum locks between his fingers. He pushed that lock behind my ear. "Never in my life I would have dreamt of having a bold and smart and so stunning woman like you as my mate. In my pack and around, women are not dominating."

My heart trickled as his words reached my ears. As I said, he was way too good with words. As if he was some kind of duke who knew ways to a woman's heart. He chuckled as I turned my face away. I didn't need to see my face in the mirror to know that I was red and glowing like a tomato placed in the light of the morning sun.

A little far from where we sat, I caught the sight of a cat couple cuddling with each other. Where the male cat was sleeping soundly and the female cat had her head on his belly. My heart filled with warmth as my brain showed me a picture of myself, snuggling up with Kelvin.

I turned my head and slowly leaned over. He was watching me but didn't utter a single word. I placed my head on his chest and a moment later, he wrapped one of his arms around my body. "I like this better!" He whispered softly, followed by a soft kiss that he placed on top of my head.
