Chapter 2

Noah

“… I get this is why he paid me so much?!” I yelled. I tried getting out the car, but the doors were locked. Shit.

“Be still and don’t break Black Beaut’ you little shit.” He hissed. “I’m a redcap goblin, names Johnny. I’m a supernatural undercover officer. My shtick is that I drive ‘round in this thing so nobody suspects I watch the city.”

I was confused.

“I was invited by the Chief of Police.” I said as leverage… He was talking… so the little 3 foot monster might be reasoned with… maybe….

I was taught all things not of the light are evil, even if they’re nice or you think they’re ok…

“Yeah, the boss like I said.” He said casually. “The Secret Police Force deal with the Secret Supernatural peoples. All kinds of us are out there, from half-angel to zebra shifter. All your lil’ fairy tales are real kid. We don’t bother nobody, but since your people are kept in the dark, it’s our job to keep it that way, and keep the peace. If one of ours gets out of line, most of the time we deal with it.” He said offering me a cigar.

I took it even though I don’t smoke….

“…Why don’t you all just come out?” I asked. Johnny rolled his eyes.

“…Really?” He scoffed. “The economy is JUST getting back right from the last spit-spat of your own people killin’ each other. Humans don’t even accept themselves ruling over each other. What good would it do to let them know how shit really works?” He lit his cigar and took a puff.

“How does it really work then?” I asked.

“I won’t sugar coat it mortal. You’re meat.” He said bluntly. “Literal meat for the pantry. The moment your people leave your little houses and venture into the wild, you’re surrounded by hungry fae. Hells, some are even dangers in town.”

“Lovely.” I mumbled.

“It ain’t all bad.” He took another puff, then took my cigar and lit it for me. “There’s the Treaty of 1605. The Church and the Kings of our peoples all agreed that humans essentially stay to themselves, and we stay to ours. If we’re caught hurting humans on human turf, we belong to the Church to be laid on the Ring, and vice-versa.”

“So with a name like ‘Equestos’…? Is he a horse?” I asked confused. This was too much.

“A unicorn. The most trusted creature by all walks of life.” He corrected with a clawed finger pointing up. “His people are vegan. Of all the peoples on Urth, those guys are literally made of the same stuff as puppies and baby giggles. He paid me in gold to get you situated. There’s going to be a learning curve, but your reaction says a lot about you. I think you got the Moxy.”

“For my family I have to.” I said and Johnny grinned.

“That’s the spirit. Let’s go meet everyone. Then you can settle in the gated community, and Monday starts the first day of training.” He beamed. “You’re one of us now. That badge is your permission slip to a world you would have never learned about.”

I looked at the badge pinned to my suit. I hadn’t taken any oaths, and this was a bit much, but I wasn’t in danger…. Not yet… I had a feeling that I won’t have to worry about the men who wore a badge with me… but everyone else.

There’s a whole world I didn’t know about, and I was thrown into it headfirst, and expected to run with it.

----Jerold an hour later---

The Chief’s office was messy today. A dragon was seen flying over Bison, and now we had to silence the witnesses with magic, and reprimand the dragon. He was lucky that this was done outside the Church’s jurisdiction. Had he been a few feet over, that wouldn’t be the case.

“I’m not taking in a human.” I hissed, sliding the folder back to him. He put it in his desk, and crossed his arms.

“You have to have someone as your partner King Aeschylus.” He called me my true name, and I hated it. He does it to piss me off. “I won’t let you deny this one.” Said Chief Equestos, tussling his two-toned white rooted, black tipped hair.

He stopped dying his hair black now that the Church became more relaxed… Originally hair that wasn’t some shade of blonde, ginger, black, gray, or brown was ‘of the Devil.’

There were previous attempts to put that stigma in the past, but they’d failed until now. People nowadays are more open to such unconventional ideas, since the world was literally rocked with their fighting.

Equestos’s fur color was a glittery white since he’s a unicorn; mine was a rich brown, being a minotaur. It’d been a long time since I’d seen his true form, and a longer time since I’d had to shift myself…

As the Battle Bull, I have to keep my temper under wraps… The angrier I get, the less control I have. Right now, Equestos was a buzzing fly in my ear.

“You know my secret. You know I can’t die. And I Don’t understand why you gave me a Human partner...” I hissed. “And of all things, one so green he doesn’t know we’re real.”

That was the thing that actually pissed me off. Not only do I get a greenhorn, one that doesn’t know a thing about law enforcement, but one who will likely fear or hate me too.

It won’t be a surprise.

“You confuse me…. You want to be on the force, but you want to play by your own rules. You’ll take who I give you. That’s what you agreed to.” He hissed. He was right, but I didn’t want to hear it. The Chief was asking too much.

“I agreed to aid this section of the country since no one else does. And I don’t want a fucking mortal partner.” I stood. I’m seven feet tall… There are few who look me in my dark, slightly redish-brown eyes. Most humans don’t even notice unless I’m pissed.

“I Gave My Blood Word.” He stood too. “You above all people know how important that is… Do this favor for me.”

“Um, I’m here.” Said a light, sweet voice. The young man sounded in his 20’s, and when I got up, all I could see was red. “Hi, I met your other officers. I’m Noa-”

“Fuck off.” I growled, letting him hear the rumble of The Minotaur King.

I rattled the large shoppe windows up front…. I stopped so I didn’t break them again.

The fear in his eyes confirmed my suspicion too. A fearful weak greenhorn!

I was so pissed that Equestos would do this against my will that I picked him up from under his armpits, and put him in the closest trashcan by the door. I made sure not to hurt him… but fuck this had my temper a 15 on a 10 point scale.

I was so pissed, my hands buzzed, which made me angrier. How dare he give me this boy…. I don’t want to see another die in my fucking hands.

I can’t die… I come back; he won’t… The Champion Blessing bestowed upon me was more like a fucking curse.

I left out. I left before my horns sprouted, then I’d probably just end up screaming at everyone.

I made it home and just stripped. Maybe a shower will help. I was so fucking pissed that I didn’t remember how. Did I drive or walk?

I can’t rightly say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to that request either. We’re supernatural. If I did, it’d be like I signed on the that damn unicorn’s plans. His life was saved by the young man’s father years ago. Unicorns are the most trustworthy of all peoples, but as a minotaur, I cannot trust so easily.

I scrubbed my hair roughly so I could start to get the musk off me.

My first partner, Diana used me as a sex toy… I thought she loved me… We were together well over three thousand years…Honestly, I forget. It’s probably longer than that…. All for me to be gone a few weeks and come back to her having a threesome.

Then there was the Vampire Prince. He did the same thing… Since he was a prince, his master, King Victor tried to force him to kill me… He didn’t want us together because of what I am, and that a minotaur was in the bed of a man he claimed as his son.

After waking up to him trying to remove my heart, I was, and still am, done with everyone.

It didn’t matter that it was the 10th century.

My existence brings real shame to their houses because of what I am… Even some supernaturals detest me, but who can blame them?
