Chapter Six

Maria Pov

“I'm knotting ties with Maria today. The priest is already on the way.” My jaw dropped as I stared at him.

He sneered at me like he said nothing.

I wasn't the only one who was startled. His father looked like he was wanted to slaughter his son while my dad had a slight grin on. Of course, he does. After all, he longs for my marriage.

"Marriage, did you just say or did I hear you wrong?" Don Dante questioned, locking glares with his son and I could tell this won't go well.

Bastard.

“Why does he have to say that? Is he serious? He wants to marry the woman who ran away from them? A traitor? And I had a man too, nothing is more disgraceful than that but yet he wants to marry me.” I thought angrily.

“Yes Father. You heard me right,” he declared with a disdainful grimace on his face, not caring about the hard glares he was receiving from his father.

Dante was about to speak something else when my aunt Aurora grasped his hand to stop him. I was terrified that he was going to strike her for interrupting.

“Why don't you and Rico go inside and speak about it? He barely arrived back from a long trip after all.” she said and Dante moaned, but approved in the end, without laying a finger on my aunt.

What did I miss?

“Rico, meet me in the study, and with Sergio,” Dante instructed as he stepped inside. My dad heeded after him while I was left with my mama, aunt, siblings, and Rico.

“Don’t try anything stupid love. You are being watched.” He lets go of me and proceeds inside the house with Enzo behind him.

My mom and aunt rushed to me, hugging me each. I never knew I needed it after all the drama I had been through. I peeked at Emily expecting at least a warm reaction from her but all she did was roll her eyes and walk inside the house.

It seems like something never changes.

Rico's POV

My mind wasn't at ease. She was no longer far from me but it didn't change the fact that she might try something stupid again.

Maybe this time something even worse. I have a bigger issue to resolve but I can't stop thinking about how stupid it is for me to leave her alone after all the stunts she pulled especially with one person who helped her years ago.

“Tell me one reason why I shouldn't put a gun to your fucking head,” My dad asked immediately I step inside his office, Sergio stands beside him like a leech that he is.

“Simple. Because I'm your son,” I responded with a grin.

“She's a traitor! She ran away from us and most importantly, got involved with another man.”

I know my dad has spies everywhere but I was careful about the men I chose to work personally for me, yet I was shadow-blind by my dad. It pissed me off, but what makes me more upset was his reminder.

Maria was going to get married to that man. It is fair that she thinks she can escape me but what isn't fair is her giving what belongs to me to someone else, my whole body boils thinking about it.

I thought killing the bastard was a way to calm my nerves down, yet it has done no justice to how I feel.

“I must support your father on this, Maria is a traitor. She betrayed all of us, my family has to suffer the most because of her betrayal. It will only be fair if you killed her or have worked as a sex….”

“Finish that statement and I promise that will be the last thing you say,” he stared at me and clicked his tongue but said nothing.

“Rico, you are too old for rebelling. The mayor's daughter is there, if you marry her, it will add more….”

“It is Mia or no one, and I’m not asking for your support father. I can get her to marry me without your consent and I know that is going to cause you a lot.”

He glanced like he wanted to murder me, even though he wouldn’t, it was still an option. He can't go against the wedding now, not after my threats.

Unless he wants his men to pick a side, it won’t end well for either of us. I will do anything to make Mia my wife and make her suffer for even letting all this happen.

“She has a man.”

“Which I killed, and no longer matters. We are getting married tonight, whether you give me your consent or not.”

He said nothing for a while and just gulped down the cup of wine in his hand. “Fine, the wedding is going to be held then, after that I want you to get them off my estate.”

“As you wish, boss. I will leave you to go see my Bride. Enzo, let's go,” I ordered him who said nothing while his father groaned but dared not to let out a word, after all, that is their punishment for allowing my little bird to escape.

Maria's POV

“I thought I would never see you again," My mom said with tears in her eyes after they took me to one of the rooms in Don Dante's house. I pulled her in for another warm hug, needing to feel her more.

My mom has been the only true family I have. She loves me as a mom and that is what most daughters in our society don't have.

If I could, three years ago I would have run away with her, she is too good for this world.

“Oh my baby," She says cupping my cheeks. “You look so thin, it must have been hard"

I doubt I look thin. Those three years have been the happiest moments of my life, I struggled but broke through, made friends, and had someone, my eyes went to my finger where Joshua's ring was. I tried not to think about his death, for now, I will make sure Rico regrets ever killing a good man.

“Here,” My mom and aunt sat me down on a bed, as they sat beside me, they looked at me with affection, regret, pity, and fear, I knew what they were thinking.

Don Dante will never allow Rico to marry me, I know and I also want that, I never die in love with that monster as my husband but if he doesn't, I will be killed or become a sex slave.

“Tell me about the world, how was it? Did you like it?" My aunty asked and I nodded, the reason I was able to escape three years was because of her, well I’m not going to let people know about that, she could be in danger for that.

“It was nice, beautiful. Everyone has the freedom to date who they want, to get the job they want, to live their life the way they want, everyone has the right to do anything and it was amazing."

"You ruin our life just for that?" Emily says, which made me stop and look at me. She had this sore look on, just like she always does whenever she sees me. It has been years and she still can't hide that she hates me.

She looks so different, her face looks swollen and her hair color has changed from blonde to black.

What is wrong with my sister?

“Emily, can you not take your frustration out on your sister? it isn't good for the baby.”

“Baby?” I gasped as I glanced at her.

Of course, she is married. She has passed the marriage age and our father won't think twice before he sells his children but why does she look so pained by the mention of the baby?

Like she is ashamed or rather disgusted.

“Congratulations. I didn't know,” I said trying to move closer to her but she stretched out her hand stopping me.

“Don't. I don't need your congratulations. It irritates me seeing you after everything you have done. I know Mom acts like it is cool that you are back, but deep down we wish you never come back,” she said with so much hatred and regret for me.

“Emily…” Aurora and Mom called.

I don't know what I did wrong, or how running away affected her. But I won't let her talk to me like that.

“I am not at......." I was about to talk when someone knocked on the door, it opened and a lady in a maid uniform entered.

“What do you want, Susan?" My aunt asked the maid while she glared at me.

“Master Rico told me to inform you to get Miss Maria prepared for the wedding."

She continued, “The priest is here to bless them.”
