Twins....?

[Vivian's POV]

He obeyed, but his gaze was enquiring. "Is everything okay?"

"All right, that's correct. I'm just heading to breakfast with Dr. David." It wasn't false. Before David went to medical school, we had been friends in college. He belonged to the Emberclaw Pack as an Alpha as well. David was quite handsome, especially with his tall, athletic frame, chiselled features, and soft blonde hair split to the side. He also had greenish-blue eyes and a thin build. He came to ask me to marry him when he got back from his medical studies, but I was already engaged to my partner, Liam.

I turned him down for the first time, but he never held me responsible. He always believed that his proposition was made too late. He never mated again after that, and here I was, carrying my mate's child.

We got to the hospital soon after, and I told Alex to wait for me after thanking him. I was relieved to feel the warmth of the hospital when the wind buffeted me outside.

"Do you have another appointment, Mrs. Liam?" Asked the receptionist. I'd been to the hospital twice in a row, so rumours would fly high and fast.

"Oh no," I answered.

Dr. David stood there with his arms crossed in his white coat and murmured, "She has come to see me," with a sense of relief. My heart was racing. Why did this feel so palpable and real? Even though Dr. David was the greatest physician I had ever seen, my uneasiness persisted. He seemed indifferent despite his black eyes being locked on mine. On the other hand, Dr. David's presence may induce nearly any behaviour in others. I was unable to talk, even though I wanted to say anything at all. I was stuck inside, unable to express myself in words.

He brought me to the bed in his office, where I laid down and he asked to check my stomach for a few minutes. I was unable to view the scan for myself because there was not a screen across from us. However, as his scowl grew, I decided not to disturb him while he took measurements and examined the screen. When he finally wiped the cold gel off my stomach and I stood up, he said, "Tell me, David, what is it? So I knew it was really over."

Though it was too soon to be relieved, he began, "I think you shouldn’t be too concerned because there’s nothing wrong with the pregnancy itself, but…" He took a moment to think. "Come, take a seat."

I followed through. He sighed as he sat behind his desk. He opened a file on his desk, tilted his head, and moaned, "but?"

"On the other hand, your health is not terrific. I'm taken aback. You appear to be in good health and have an uncommon family history. But from reading your reports, I notice that you're not very strong, which could be detrimental to the infants' growth." As he put down the paperwork, I grimaced.

My eyes grew larger.

"The babies?"

"Yes, Vivian, you are expecting twins_fraternal twins, and that makes me even more concerned about this pregnancy and your health."

Fraternal twins. I could have been happier if the divorce hadn't affected me, but it was obvious that the doctor didn't think the same of me. It worried him. "Will I lose them?" With some hesitation, I asked.

"I would say you need to rest as much as possible until you are past your first trimester because the chances of miscarrying are very high. Perhaps it was best to wait to share the good news about the pregnancy." I had no doubt that the pack members would want to see me if they heard that an Alpha heir was going to born soon.

I took the file and looked over it, nodding in agreement. Despite not being a medical professional, I had studied business and medicine in college. "How is it possible for my health to be so weak?" I asked.

He gave a head shake. "It’s beyond me, but I will give you some multivitamins, and we will keep an eye on you."

"Thanks very much, David. Could I ask you a weird question? Does rejection affect an unborn child?" I enquired in a low voice.

His gaze was sarcastic, so I lifted my chin in the hopes that he wouldn't see right through me.

He sat back and thought for a bit before glaring at me with a cold, calculated look. His facial expressions conveyed his emotions, and I could also see that he was perplexed by what I had said. "No, Vivian, this will not harm the baby, but it is certain to harm the mother, and if the mother is already fragile, like yourself, she might never be able to bear a baby again."

That remark made the corners of my lips twitch. I covered my fear with a smile. "What if my condition improves?" I sounded a little desperate in my voice.

Once more, he shook his head. My spine tingled with cold. It had to have been cold outside because I hadn't noticed it before. I ought to have departed earlier. "The circumstances will determine that, as you are aware. We must be fully aware of your current circumstances. You will still have issues, but you should feel better overall," he said.

I sighed, understanding, and shook my head. "Thank you for telling me, David."

Upon saying goodbye to David, I chose not to return home. My mind was clouded by worry and restlessness. I didn't know what to do after what he had said. I had spent the last hour considering what to do. I resolved to walk home regardless of the weather, so I excused Alex. My heart ached from a memory from long ago, and my mind was still a mess. My heart continued to hurt as I strolled across the park, the breeze stroking my face and allowing the clean air to fill my lungs.
