Chapter 4 Bring her back

Selena waited for a while but Britney’s silence on the other end of the line was concerning. She furrowed her eyebrows and said, "Britney, don't do anything stupid, okay?"

"Don't worry, Sel," The young woman replied. "I know what I'm doing."

After that, Britney hung up the phone abruptly.

Selena felt even more uneasy. Britney had a habit of acting rashly, and if she caused any trouble in her name, it could end up affecting her reputation in return.

Once she got home, Britney went into her large dressing room. It was bigger than most people’s bedroom but she was thinking about enlarging it. She sat on one of the puffy couches and flipped through her contacts in her phone until she found Antony’s phone number.

Antony was one of her closest friends and also the new vice-president of Higgins Hospital that she just came back from.

In fact, Britney considered Antony to be her wisest friend and the best at giving her effective advice. That’s why she needed to talk to him about the whole situation with Olivia.

Though Antony was busy, he listened patiently to everything Britney had to say, then chuckled.

Britney's worries seemed unnecessary to him, and he was surprised that she would even worry about Olivia. She was nothing but a vermin and Ethan had already divorced her. She wasn’t a problem to be solved.

"You're worrying too much, Britney. Sure, Olivia could be pregnant you’re your brother’s child now, and they'll decide together whether to keep the baby or not. Honestly, it’s none of your business. If Ethan wants to keep it, then you won’t be able to go against him, would you? And if he decides not to keep it, Olivia won’t be able to do anything about it either."

These words felt like a thorn in Britney’s throat. She couldn't help but wonder if Ethan would want to keep that child. If he did so, then Olivia would remain a part of their lives forever and perhaps Selena would never get to finally marry her brother like she so desired.

But while she bit on her nails, Britney quickly realized that this was wrong. The child was innocent, even if he was growing in Olivia’s belly. He should not be used as a tool in her personal affairs.

“…Anyway,” She sighed, relaxing into her cushion. “You’re right, as always. But Ethan will be at the clubhouse this evening. You should go and make sure to tell him about Olivia’s pregnancy so he’ll have the time to prepare for it and think about the right decision to take…I don’t think he’s aware of it as of yet.”

“Sure. I’ll do that for you Britney, don’t worry.”

Antony and Ethan were acquaintances for having gone to the same private schools and studying abroad together. Yet, despite all that, they were not very close to each other. They just maintained a formal and respectful relationship.

That evening, as Ethan emerged from one of the VIP rooms at “The Night Is Mysterious” clubhouse, he coincidentally encountered Antony Higgins in the hallway. The two of them were both strikingly handsome and peerless under the light.

Antony greeted Ethan with a wide grin, "What a coincidence."

Ethan was skeptical of such coincidence and asked, "Is there something you want to talk about?"

They have seen each other in different settings countless times but never went out of their ways to greet each other like that. Antony’s smile turned a little wider as he delivered the news:

"I just wanted to congratulate you, Ethan. You're going to be a father! Don't forget to invite us to celebrate!"

Ethan’s eyes darkened. Why would Antony say something like that?

He remembered Olivia’s words from that morning. Could it be that she was telling the truth when she said she was pregnant?

He remained expressionless as Antony continued, whispering close to his ear:

"…There’s just one thing I’m worried about, bro. I’m saying this only because I care about you. You’ve been in love with Lina Ortega for nearly a decade now. If you plan to start something with her, then you need to encourage Olivia to terminate her pregnancy. I’m sure you know that adding a child to the mix will only complicate things.”

Ethan only response to those words was to sneer in contempt and walked out of the club without a word. He wanted to stay a little longer but not anymore. Antony had put him in a bad mood, plus he couldn’t stop thinking about Olivia ever since he left her out there to deal with Mr. Willow who wanted to hurt her.

His driver took him back to the mansion. The entry door opened and he almost thought that he’d find Olivia behind it but instead, there was Ken Einstein, his assistant.

“What’re you doing here at this hour?” The young CEO asked.

“I’m here to give you this.”

Ken had a brown envelope in hand. Ethan swiftly retrieved the file from him and opened it to find the divorce agreement that he had given to Olivia earlier that day.

She had signed it neatly with her name, indicating her agreement to end their marriage.

Ethan’s jaw tightened. This is what he wanted right? Then, why was his chest so tight with concern? He turned to his assistant and asked:

“Do you know where she is right now?”

The butler came at that moment and informed him that Olivia had come back home earlier to change her clothes and then she left again.

“She chose to wear the same white-washed clothes she had on over a year ago when she first moved into this mansion, sir.”

The butler had sensed that there might be something amiss Olivia and Ethan Williams but he didn't dare to speak up.

Ethan turned to Ken again after hearing the butler’s words:

“You have to locate her now.” He said. “I need Olivia back in this home as soon as possible…She has something of mine.”

Ken nodded sharply and left.

He searched for Olivia until very late at night, not daring to stop as not to earn his boss’s wrath.

Finally, he spotted her sitting alone on the side of the road, holding a tablet of pills and mineral water.

He approached her and recognized her after staring at her for a while.

"Ehm…Miss Hansley, what are you doing out here so late?" he asked.

Olivia looked up at him, her eyes completely darkened. She wasn’t even bothered to ask how Ken had found her. His fake concern didn’t convince her at all.

"I'm taking my medicine," she replied, picking out another pill and swallowing it with the water.

Ken noticed how different she looked from the high-class woman he knew her to be.

"You look different," he commented, scowling at her rags.

"I don't need your Opinion, ken." Olivia snapped, feeling defensive.

Ken stared in silence for a while.

Olivia was someone he couldn’t truly understand. When his boss Ethan had said that he wanted her to sign those divorce papers, Ken had anticipated her refusal and had planned many strategies to deal with it.

However, Olivia had surprised him by signing the divorce papers and leaving the mansion without a fuss. Someone else in that position would have tried everything to take advantage of the situation. Why didn’t she?

"Mr. Williams wants to see you," He informed her.

"I'm done with him. I've signed the papers and there's no reason for me to see him again," Olivia replied firmly.

But Ken and the bodyguard he’d come with were determined to take her back with them.

"We cannot leave without you," he insisted.

"Listen here Ken, I said that I will not follow you, if you force me to get into that car, then it’ll be a kidnapping. I'm sure you don't want to see the headlines in town tomorrow, saying that the assistant to the president of the Williams Group kidnapped a woman under his boss’s instructions.”

Olivia had spoken with a pale face, her beautiful eyes full of resistance.

Ken replied through gritted teeth, "If Miss Hansley really refuses to cooperate, then we will definitely have to drag her to the car by pulling her hair. The medias in this town are controlled by Mr. Williams. We have nothing to fear.”

Olivia laughed at the threat, standing on her feet. She was still much smaller than Ken and the bodyguard but her eyes spat fire at them.

“I dare you to touch me, Ken. Let’s see what I won’t do to you. Come on, pull my hair and see!”

Ken was starting to get a little angry, his fists tightening. Suddenly, the bodyguard stood between them and spoke in a soft tone to Olivia:

“Please, Mrs. Hansley…”

His eyes were also kind and soft. Olivia’s anger started to fade as the bodyguard smiled at her and then opened the car door. She glared at Ken one more time before resolving to slide inside the car.

After a short drive, it arrived at the Williams residence, a villa surrounded by flowers and large fields of lavender. But Olivia wasn’t in the mood to appreciate it. Not anymore.

She followed Ken into the living room where Ethan was sitting on the sofa with his sister Britney, playing games.

They barely looked up when she came in but Ethan showed her a document proving that she was pregnant. The nurse had given her a copy earlier and she knew that Ethan must have bribed the hospital to receive a copy too. She gritted her teeth and stared back into his cold gaze:

“Turns out you were saying the truth…You’re really pregnant, Olivia, huh.”
