Chapter 34 That Person Woke Up

For a second, Emily was at a loss for words. The next morning, Robert woke her up to head to work together.

"Robert, isn't this outfit a bit too much?" Emily glanced at her designer clothes, feeling a bit helpless.

She wanted to keep things low-key, but Mia had picked out her clothes early in the morning. Seeing Mia's effort, she couldn't say no and had to wear what was laid out.

As Emily stepped out of Robert's car, everyone at the office noticed and started whispering about her, trying to figure out who she was to get a personal escort from Robert.

"Who else could it be? It's obviously David's daughter," someone in the know spilled the beans.

When Emily got to her department, she felt everyone's eyes on her. She did her best to ignore it, introduced herself, and then headed into her office.

She was suddenly placed in the company, probably taking someone else's spot. She figured the only way to win everyone over was to do her job really well.

After busting her butt for a few days, Emily's work started to get some recognition, and people were less resistant.

Seeing Emily working so hard, Robert felt a twinge of heartache and said, "I wanted you to have something to do by coming to work, not to work yourself to death."

Emily, munching on the healthy meal Robert brought, joked, "If Dad had given me some random small position, I might not have to work so hard. But this is a department manager gig, so I gotta do it right. Can't embarrass Dad and you, right?" Hearing Emily's sensible words, Robert smiled with relief.

After finishing her meal, Emily dove back into work. If Harper hadn't come to drag her out, she might have worked until she lost track of time.

Harper whispered mysteriously in Emily's ear, "Inside scoop: Nicholas has gotten hooked on gambling, and he's betting big. If Abigail hadn't personally stopped him, the Jackson family might have lost half their fortune."

"Where'd you hear that?" Emily's eyes flickered. No wonder Abigail hadn't contacted her; she was busy dealing with Nicholas.

"It's all over high society. You're just too buried in work to know." Harper laughed, but then got serious. "Your body hasn't fully recovered. You can't work this hard. You need to sleep early and eat well."

Emily felt a headache coming on. She'd been hearing this every day lately. She handed a pack of cookies to Harper. "Here, eat this and stop nagging."

Harper pouted, opened the cookies, and started munching, silently agreeing. Just as Emily was about to take Harper to a bar to listen to some music, her phone rang.

After the last incident, Emily was hesitant to take Harper out recklessly. Seeing it was Robert calling, Emily answered.

"Emily, that person has woken up," Robert said.

Emily's desire to go out vanished instantly. She grabbed Harper and headed to the address Robert gave.

Robert had arranged for the person to be in the Johnson family's nursing home, where everyone was tight-lipped.

"Emily, who are we going to see?" Harper asked, puzzled. "Why all the mystery?"Emily didn't say a word, her face cold and intimidating. When they got to the designated floor, someone was already there to meet them. The doctor saw Emily and immediately approached. "Please follow me."

Emily glanced at Harper, pursed her lips, and decided to leave Harper behind. She didn't want to risk upsetting her with the truth. Even though the chances were slim, she didn't want to take any risks.

Emily followed the doctor alone, noticing that Robert's people were all over the place. The residents of the surrounding rooms were confined and not allowed to come out.

"He's inside," the doctor said.

Emily nodded and walked in. As soon as she entered, the strong, pungent smell of disinfectant hit her, making her frown slightly.

A man lay on the hospital bed, hooked up to various machines, looking like he was on the brink of death. When the man saw Emily, he got agitated, trying to say something but unable to form complete sentences.

The machines started beeping like crazy, and soon, a group of doctors rushed in to calm him down with a sedative. The man settled down a bit, but his eyes were still bloodshot, like a wild animal.

"Emily, he shouldn't get too worked up. If anything happens, call us immediately," the doctor said. Emily nodded, and the group quickly left the room, leaving her alone with the man.

Emily carefully observed the man, who was restrained and unable to move, his bloodshot eyes following her every move. After a bit, Emily confirmed she didn't know this guy. "What's your name?"

The man stayed silent. Emily didn't get annoyed and continued, "Fine, if you don't talk, I can still find out. I can dig into your whole family if I want to. I'm giving you a chance by asking you now, got it?"

The man closed his eyes, ignoring her. Seeing his uncooperative attitude, Emily shook her head and recounted the info Robert had given her. When she mentioned the man's daughter, he finally reacted. Weakly, he said, "Don't hurt her. She's innocent."

Emily sneered, her tone cold and merciless, "Innocent? Am I not innocent?"

The man got agitated. "As long as you don't hurt her, I'll tell you whatever you want to know."

"Isn't it better to cooperate from the start?" Emily said indifferently, "Tell me, who ordered you?"

The man pursed his lips, hesitating for a long time. "You really won't hurt my daughter?"

"I'm not a monster. If you cooperate, your daughter will be safe," Emily said, not mentioning that even if he didn't cooperate, she wouldn't harm a little girl but would deal with the man himself.

The man took a deep breath and resolutely uttered a name, "Nicholas."

'It's him!' Emily's eyes instantly turned fierce.

"Nicholas paid us to teach you a lesson, preferably to make you lose the baby, making it look like an accident," the man said.

Emily stayed silent, her expression terrifyingly calm. She thought, 'How did Nicholas know I was pregnant? And the timing was just so coincidental.'

Emily narrowed her eyes, a dangerous glint flashing. "What does this have to do with James?"
