Chapter 4 Cooling-Off Period for Divorce

The two of them walked up to the service window, and the staff there looked pretty indifferent, no stranger to such situation. Usually, folks coming in for a divorce were crying, arguing, or even fighting. Seeing a couple as calm as these two was a rare sight.

They were both good-looking and dressed to the nines, hinting they had some serious cash. How did it come to this?

The staff, though curious, didn't dig into their business and got the paperwork done quickly. Signing, stamping—the whole thing took less than ten minutes.

But for Sophia, it felt like forever. Her heartbeat pounded in her ears, each second a reminder of what she was about to lose.

She thought she'd be divorced today, but then...

"According to the new rules, there's a cooling-off period for divorces now. If either of you changes your mind during this time, you can come back with the documents to cancel the divorce," the staff said, handing them each a copy of the divorce application.

"Good things never come easy," Sophia muttered as she skimmed through the terms, feeling a bit ironic. "There's a cooling-off period for divorce, but why isn't there one for marriage?"

"If there was a cooling-off period for marriage, you wouldn't have married me?" David's face turned grim, a cold smile on his lips.

"Not at all!" Sophia shot back, raising an eyebrow. "I got four hundred million dollars from you. Four hundred million! Most people couldn't make that in a lifetime. I'd say I came out ahead!"

David's face darkened even more, clearly pissed, his fingers clenching in his pocket. Sophia had a feeling he wanted to strangle her.

Thinking about it, Sophia got even more annoyed. David was the one who wanted the divorce in the first place, so why was he acting all hurt now? Hypocrite!

David, on the other hand, was genuinely frustrated. He couldn't figure out why Sophia seemed like a different person after the divorce. Had she been faking it all along? Or was she just putting on a brave face?

Truth was, David didn't want to divorce her, but it was Michael's dying wish, and he couldn't ignore it.

David sighed, feeling a bit resentful. But he knew there was nothing he could do now. They both had their own thoughts as they parted ways at the door.

Just as Sophia was about to leave, she heard a familiar, weak voice.

"David, are the procedures done?"

Emily!

Wait, something was off! Today's Emily seemed different. She was wearing a loose white dress, looking all sad, a far cry from the arrogant woman Sophia had seen before.

Most importantly, her dress had a slight cinch at the waist, making her belly look particularly prominent.

Gained weight?

Then David's words shattered Sophia's last bit of hope.

"Didn't I tell you to wait in the car? Why did you come out? It's cold outside, and the baby is very important to the Jones Family. You can't catch a cold." David's words were caring, but they sounded distant.

Sophia suddenly felt like she'd been played. "Mr. Jones, don't you owe me an explanation?"

David looked at Sophia, his handsome face calm and unruffled. "You don't need to know."

The last bit of sadness in Sophia's heart vanished completely. She hadn't expected David to be a playboy, not only cheating during their marriage but also having a child now!

David often ignored her desire, making Sophia suspect that he had erectile dysfunction.

Now it seemed he did not!

Sophia said, "You..."

Emily said, "Ms. Brown, don't blame David. It's all my fault. If you want to hit or scold someone, take it out on me."

"Really?" Sophia raised her hand high, on the verge of slapping Emily. Sophia moved too suddenly and too quickly for David to stop her, and Emily, caught off guard, could only close her eyes in fear.
