Chapter 10 I'm Allergic to Men

On the other end of the phone, I couldn't catch what Ava was saying, but I did hear a doctor said to him, "Your lover is pregnant, but you still want to marry another woman? What a jerk!"

James shot back, "You got it wrong, this isn't my kid."

"If it's not yours, why are you so worked up?" Another young voice chimed in. It was sudden, but oddly soothing.

James didn't say a word.

I stepped out from the corner and saw him rushing off. This time, he didn't even bother to say a word to me before leaving.

How was this any different from bailing on our wedding day?

When you were left speechless, sometimes all you could do was laugh.

Just as I was about to leave, a familiar voice stopped me. "Are you leaving?"

It was that pleasant male voice from earlier. I looked up and saw his handsome face.

Honestly, in all these years, he was the only guy I'd met in real life who was almost as good-looking as James.

His slightly tanned skin and chiseled features gave off a strong, sexy vibe.

I couldn't help but wonder what kind of ripped body was hiding under those clothes.

But handsome guys always attracted women and made their girlfriends jealous.

"Yeah," I said flatly, feeling like he was being a bit nosy.

Just as I was about to leave, I heard David rushing over, calling out, "Miss Johnson, sorry I'm late. Got stuck at a traffic light. Where's Mr. Smith?"

I couldn't help but laugh. It turned out James was in such a hurry, he forgot to tell David.

"David, do you know where the nearest bus stop is?" I asked.

David looked puzzled, "Miss Johnson, are you joking? We drove here today. Wherever you need to go, Mr. Smith will take you."

I chuckled, "Mr. Smith got a call and probably drove off."

David's face fell, and he stammered, "Miss Johnson, you must be joking. On such an important day, how could Mr. Smith leave you alone?"

"Nope, I saw him leave with my own eyes." I pointed to the row of glass walls by the door. They were all transparent, and I could clearly see him running out and driving away.

It made sense for there to be a square in front of the city hall, with plenty of parking spaces for people coming to register their marriages.

David couldn't cover for James this time. He awkwardly smiled at me and handed me the photos he was holding.

David went to make a phone call. Seeing him sweating bullets, I thought James was really annoying. At home, his parents cleaned up after him, and outside, David took care of everything for him.

After hanging up, David wiped the sweat from his forehead, approached respectfully, and said with a forced smile, "There's a temporary issue at the company. Mr. Smith said it won't take long. There's a hotel under the Smith Group nearby. You can rest in a suite there, and he'll be back soon."

Soon? Would Ava even let him come back to continue registering our marriage?

David's smile was strained. Before I could laugh, the handsome guy burst out laughing.

I looked at him and asked, "What's so funny?"
