Chapter 2 His Mouth Made Him Hard to Like

Hearing her shout, the convoy of Mercedes-Benz cars sped up and boxed in the van from all sides.

The folks who got out of the cars were all dressed the same, making it clear they weren't your average Joes. They moved in and pinned Daniel and his crew against the van.

Daniel snarled, "You idiots wanna die messing with me here?"

They ignored him and turned their attention to Quinn.

She was just as stunned. The bodyguards lined up on either side, all eyes on the car at the back.

The guy who finally stepped out left her speechless. It was Carl Ward, the guy she'd just married that morning!

Carl adjusted his suit, gave her a quick glance, and walked up to Daniel. "You've got one minute to explain what's going on."

Daniel got all riled up. "Around here, you should know who I am. I'm..."

Before he could finish, the bodyguard holding him kneed him in the waist.

The bodyguard snapped, "Answer the question."

Daniel had no choice but to spill the whole story.

After listening, Carl waved his hand, and the bodyguards shoved Daniel and his crew into the van like they were packing boxes. Then they drove the van away.

Carl pulled a handkerchief from his sleeve and handed it to Quinn.

"Thanks!" Taking the handkerchief, Quinn felt a bit moved.

This was only the second time she'd met Carl. Compared to the awkwardness of their morning marriage registration, things felt a bit more relaxed now.

It all started half a year ago when she saved an old man, Steven Ward, during her morning run in the park.

As they got to know each other during their runs, Quinn confided in Steven about Jake's plan to use her to pay off debts.

Steven introduced his grandson, saying he had a good temper, didn't gamble, had a stable job, a house, and a car. He'd only been in one long-distance relationship but had never met the person. He was currently of marriageable age.

Quinn and Carl ended up getting married in a whirlwind.

"How much money do you want? Say it all at once. The offer won't last." Just as she was feeling touched, Carl suddenly spoke up.

Quinn looked up at him. In both looks and demeanor, he definitely stood out. But his mouth made him hard to like.

Carl continued, "My time is limited. If you don't have any plans, then follow mine."

What Daniel had said earlier didn't matter.

And so, for the first time in her life, Quinn sat in a luxury car. The convoy turned around and drove off.

Curious onlookers came out.

"Isn't that Jake's daughter?"

"How could a jerk have such a beautiful daughter? She must be adopted! That car looks expensive; she must've found a good husband."

The convoy pulled up in front of a villa.

Two rows of maids and butlers stood at the entrance. A man at the end ran up, opened the car door, and respectfully said, "Mrs. Ward, please step out of the car!"

Quinn pointed at herself and looked at Carl, wondering if she heard right.

Carl was about to step out of the car when his phone buzzed. He said coolly, "Those guys are already at the police station. The cops will take it from here. You better cut the tricks."

He then pushed the door open and got out.

"Mr. Ward!" The crowd greeted him respectfully as he walked towards the villa.

The guy who opened the door saw her hesitation and smiled. "Mrs. Ward, you're still getting used to things. Mr. Ward might seem cold, but he's a good guy once you know him."

Quinn nodded and jogged to catch up with Carl.

She walked half a step behind him, eyeing his perfect profile. Seeing his chiseled jawline, she suppressed her excitement and asked, "Who are you really?"

Carl turned his head, his eyes almost mesmerizing.

"Your husband!"

At that moment, Quinn couldn't just walk away like usual. "Can I ask you for a favor?"

"I already helped you once downstairs at your home."

"Can you help me one more time?"

As they exchanged words, Carl turned to see the determination and hope in her eyes.

Quinn realized their eye contact was getting a bit too intimate and looked down, speaking sincerely, "Please help me save my mom. Without her, I might have been sold off by my heartless stepfather! You can even consider this my request for marrying you."

Her eyes sparkled with tears, but Carl didn't give her the answer she wanted.

"My grandpa's been waiting all morning. Let's go see him first."

He had already spent a lot of time today and couldn't delay any longer.

As they crossed a bridge, Carl suddenly said, "My grandpa likes you a lot. If you make him happy, I can help you."

Quinn couldn't believe it. Maybe he wasn't so bad after all.

"Thank you!"

They walked through a bamboo grove.

"Grandpa!" Carl called out first.

The elderly man fishing by the bamboo grove turned around, seeing the two of them, a perfect match.

Steven's face lit up with joy.

"Ah! Good! I never thought my wish would come true. Seeing you get married before I die. Where's the marriage certificate?"

For the first time, Carl smiled bitterly. "Don't we have any trust between us? Here you go!"

He pulled out the marriage certificate from his pocket and stood by his grandpa, supporting him, completely different from his earlier cold demeanor.

Steven looked at the marriage certificate over and over.

While Quinn was in a daze, Steven suddenly placed her hand and Carl's hand together with the marriage certificate on top.

Quinn tried to pull her hand away but couldn't, starting to feel nervous. This was the first time she had such close contact with a guy.

"Since you are legally married and a family, you must help each other and grow together."
