Chapter 5 Making a Deal with the Devil
Dominic Voss's POV:
Sitting in the car, I watched Chloe walk out of the Morgan Villa, my grip tightening on the steering wheel.
Chloe's face was worn and sorrowful, yet her beauty shone through. She looked so hurt that I almost wanted to jump out and take her away.
I remembered the shock in my assistant Lucas Brown's voice when he reported to me this afternoon.
"Boss, it seems Miss Morgan's family doesn't care much about her. When I went to gather information today, their servant revealed some family secrets."
"What did they say?" I asked.
Lucas replied, "The servant said Miss Morgan's mother passed away years ago, and her father married the housemaid, Mary, with whom he had a son, Henry Morgan. Miss Morgan's fiancé, Liam, has always been in love with her stepsister, Grace Dawson. It was only after Grace went abroad that Liam got together with Miss Morgan."
Lucas added, "Boss, Miss Morgan doesn't seem to be favored by her father. Grace seems more like his biological daughter than Miss Morgan."
Chloe's beautiful eyes turned red, and I saw tears falling.
I couldn't wait any longer. I opened the car door and stopped her from walking onto the road.
But she seemed not to hear me and turned to walk into the dark night.
"Chloe!" I grabbed her wrist forcefully, stopping her.
My heart was pounding.
I had never worried about someone like this before. Chloe looked so fragile now that I had no doubt if a damn car suddenly appeared, she would run right into it.
Chloe Morgan's POV:
I turned around, my swollen eyes recognizing the person in front of me, and I was surprised.
"Don't worry about me. I just want to be alone for a while," I said.
My voice sounded eerily calm, but I could feel Dominic's gaze locked on me, as if he could see through all my disguises.
He was silent for a moment, then walked around to face me and sighed. "Chloe, look at me."
I was forced to lift my head. His worried eyes made me instinctively want to avoid them.
I had only known Dominic for a short time, yet he was so concerned about me, as if I were someone very important to him.
But the moment my so-called family saw me appear at home, they all blamed me.
"What happened?" Dominic asked.
I turned my head, trying not to let the tears fall.
"Nothing. I just..." I couldn't finish my sentence.
"Just what?" Dominic pressed.
"I just..." I took a deep breath, holding back the sobs to make myself look less miserable.
Then I continued, "I just suddenly felt very tired and wanted to take a walk."
Dominic clearly didn't believe me. He glanced at my thin clothes and draped the coat he had been holding over my shoulders.
He said softly, "Get in the car."
"Sorry, Mr. Voss, I want to be alone for a while," I said, turning to leave, but my wrist was grabbed again. Dominic didn't give me a chance to refuse.
He forcefully led me to a black Maybach and directly pushed me into the car.
The sadness I felt earlier seemed to be forgotten. I asked loudly, "Dominic! What are you doing?"
Even if he was a big shot or a desperado, I didn't fear him now.
Even if he killed me, I wouldn't find it hard to accept right now.
"Tell me, where are you planning to go this late?" Dominic asked.
He turned around, placing his hands on either side of me, trapping me between the seat and him.
I could even feel his breath on my face.
"Or have you forgotten our agreement when I let you go?" he asked, leaning closer.
His sudden action startled me, and I instinctively wanted to retreat, but I was trapped in the car, only able to watch his face come closer.
His eyes were locked on me.
His warm breath, with a faint hint of tobacco, wasn't unpleasant but had a strange intensity that made my heart race.
"I just want to clear my mind alone. Please let me go," I said, turning my head, not daring to look at Dominic, my tone filled with panic and pleading.
But even with my head turned, I could feel Dominic's gaze on my flushed ears.
"Are you shy?" he asked in a teasing voice.
The car was eerily quiet, and I could almost hear my rapid heartbeat.
I tried to suppress my panic and asked, "Mr. Voss, what do you want? Thank you for your help, but—"
"But what?" Dominic interrupted me, his deep eyes boring into mine.
His gaze made me uncomfortable, and I avoided his eyes.
I said, "But there's nothing between us. I can't accept your help with a clear conscience."
"Nothing between us?" Dominic repeated, a mysterious smile appearing on his face. "Chloe, are you sure there's nothing between us? Who saved your life?"
When he spoke, he was very close, his breath on my neck, bringing a tingling sensation.
I couldn't help but shrink my neck, even more afraid to look into his eyes.
"Or," Dominic said, lifting my chin, forcing me to look at him. "Do you think my help is so cheap that it's not worth your repayment?"
His action startled me, and I instinctively wanted to retreat, but his strong arms held me firmly.
I struggled, but it was like a butterfly caught in a spider's web; the more I struggled, the weaker I became.
"Dominic, let me go!" I shouted.
Dominic sneered, "Let you go? Chloe, do you know that you look like a homeless person right now? It's so sad. You're no longer the socialite you once were."
I was trembling with anger. How could Dominic say that?
He was so cruel and arrogant!
Dominic continued, "Did I say anything wrong? Miss Morgan, think carefully. What do you have now?"
"I..." My words stopped as I was unable to answer his question.
Yes, I had nothing now.
My family kicked me out, and Liam was going to marry Grace.
The pain almost froze my heart. I bit my lip, unable to speak.
Maybe my expression was too heartbreaking, and Dominic released his hold on me, leaning back in his seat, his tone calm. "Chloe, I fell in love with you at first sight."
"What?" I was stunned, looking at Dominic in disbelief. What did he say?
Dominic ignored my surprise and continued speaking, "Chloe, be my lover, and I can help you get revenge on those who hurt you. Are you really going to let them off so easily? Remember, we can't survive on kindness alone."
I looked at him, shocked, unable to believe what I was hearing.
Be his lover?
"Why do you want to help me?" I asked, my voice trembling.
I didn't understand why Dominic wanted to help me. What was his purpose?
I had nothing and no worth.
"You're interesting. As for why I'm helping you, maybe I just don't want to see you being bullied like that?" Dominic said, looking at me. "Be my lover, and you'll be the only mistress of the Night."
The air in the car seemed to freeze, and I could only hear my deafening heartbeat.
I looked at Dominic, and an image of a devil suddenly appeared in my mind.
He was handsome, powerful, yet dangerous.
Making a deal with him was undoubtedly pushing myself into a more terrifying abyss.
However, I have nothing left, right?
I lifted my head, meeting his gaze. "Okay, I agree."
Dominic looked at me. "Good. From now on, only I have the right to decide your fate."
He reached out, pulled me into his embrace, and leaned down to kiss my lips.
