Chapter 3 Let's Get a Divorce
When Elisa walked in with her suitcase, Flora was just about to order some takeout. She handed her phone to Elisa. "Hey, check this out. What do you feel like eating?"
Seeing Flora still looking pretty sick, Elisa frowned. "Your cold is really bad. Maybe you should skip the takeout."
She took off her coat and rolled up her sleeves. "Hang tight, I'll whip something up for you."
Since neither of them had much of an appetite, Elisa just made two dishes and a soup.
Flora was touched as she ate. "Elisa, your cooking is incredible! I can't believe that idiot Howard doesn't appreciate a wife as awesome as you. He's such a fool!"
Elisa handed her a bowl of soup. "Take it easy."
Flora downed the soup in one go, set the bowl down, and asked, "So, how long are you planning to give him the silent treatment this time?"
Elisa looked serious. "It's not a silent treatment. I'm divorcing him."
Flora was stunned. "Are you finally letting go?"
Elisa lowered her head a bit and gave a bitter smile. "What else can I do? Victoria's back."
Lately, Howard had been spending almost all his time with Victoria, and it was just too much.
Since his heart was untouchable, Elisa let go of her attempts. There was little reason to remain in the role of Howard's wife.
At the mention of Victoria, Flora got angry and started ranting, "Victoria was the one who turned down Howard's proposal back then, too scared to stand up to the Brown Family, and ran off abroad. Now she comes back to mess things up between you and Howard. She's just a homewrecker! Why should you give up being Howard's wife just because she's back? Why don't we expose these two jerks and show everyone what they're really like?"
Elisa shook her head. "Howard's PR team is too strong. In the end, they'd come out fine, and I'd be the one looking like a fool."
Besides, she didn't want everyone knowing about her failed marriage.
Flora was really upset. "Are you just going to let it go? It's so unfair!"
Elisa was pretty calm. "At least I had three years of a luxurious life, never had to worry about money, and had tons of designer bags and jewelry. It's not a total loss."
Howard might not have loved her, but he never treated her badly when it came to material things.
Hearing this, Flora scoffed.
Elisa had top grades when she got into the acting department at Harmony City Film Academy, and she's always been the top student there.
She was famous throughout the school for her beauty and amazing acting skills. Even the department teachers thought she was born to be an actress.
If she hadn't given up acting to be a full-time housewife for Howard right after graduation, she would have made a name for herself in the entertainment industry long ago, easily surpassing Victoria, and she could get all the designer bags and jewelry she wanted on her own.
Thinking about it, Flora sighed and asked, "So, what's your plan now?"
Elisa replied, "Rest for a few days, find a place to live, and finish writing the script for 'Restart'."
Flora asked, "Don't you want to go back to acting?"
Elisa was taken aback. "I haven't acted in so long, I probably don't have the skills anymore."
"Come on, how do you know if you don't try?" Flora kept pushing. "The two scripts you wrote were both hits and made several actors famous. You have a great understanding of characters and can really bring them to life. Nowadays, a lot of actors don't even bother to study their roles, and their acting is terrible, but they still get famous. You're way better than them, so why not give it a shot?"
Flora had a point. Even if Elisa couldn't make it as an actress, she could still be a top-notch screenwriter. With her talent, she'd always be able to support herself.
Elisa had a wild imagination and loved diving into different roles.
During those three years as a full-time housewife, she got bored and wrote a script, which surprisingly became a hit and earned her a ton of fans.
Some fans even dug up her old college acting videos, and they were blown away, begging her to make her acting debut.
Elisa loved acting. Giving up her dream career for Howard was the dumbest thing she ever did.
Now that her failed marriage was almost over, it was time to start fresh.
The two of them chatted for a long time before heading to their rooms to rest.
Just as Elisa was about to fall asleep, she got a call from Angus.
"Mrs. Brown, Mr. Brown has a headache again. Where did you put his special medicine?" Angus asked.
Elisa didn't react right away and answered on autopilot, "In the left bedside table in the master bedroom."
There was some rummaging, and then Angus said, "It's not here, Mrs. Brown. Mr. Brown's headache is really bad, and I'm worried. Could you come back? My eyes aren't what they used to be, and I don't know how long it'll take to find it."
Elisa was silent for a few seconds, then it hit her. "Let him suffer! It's just a headache, it won't kill him!"
Angus was usually sharp and resourceful. Even if he couldn't find the original medicine, he could call the family doctor or get new meds. Plus, he wouldn't call her in the middle of the night for this.
It had to be Howard making Angus do it. The headache was just an excuse.
Elisa didn't want to argue and was about to hang up.
Angus quickly said, "Mrs. Brown, wait a minute..."
Before he could finish, Elisa cut him off, "Angus, are you on speakerphone?"
Angus hesitated, glanced at Howard's grim face, and after Howard nodded, he cautiously admitted, "Yes, Mrs. Brown."
Elisa chuckled, "Alright, let me talk to him. Howard, are you listening?"
There was no response, so Elisa continued, "If you're sick, get treated. If you can't find the medicine, ask Angus. Why call me? Don't forget, we're getting divorced. I don't have to take care of you."
Howard's expression turned icy. His tone was sharp, but his voice was still hoarse and pained, "You used to rush to take care of me, and now it's too much trouble? So much for your so-called feelings."
She suddenly felt a bit dazed. Could he really be sick?
Even though they were about to divorce, Elisa couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy for him.
But then she thought of Victoria and regained her resolve.
Howard was right. Whenever he got sick before, Elisa insisted on taking care of him herself, even doing little things like pouring water and handing over medicine.
She had done these things for so long that Howard had gotten used to her humble dedication.
Even now, when she had asked for a divorce, he still assumed these things were her responsibility.
After a long pause, Elisa slowly asked, "Howard, have I been too kind to you?"
