Chapter 5 The Deception of a Fickle Man
After a quick freshen-up, Sienna tagged along with Kelvin to the task force meeting. Everyone was already there, waiting.
Teaming up with the local police, they found out that right before Cara's cremation, the crematorium staff claimed they saw a ghost. Cara's body was also missing.
Leroy shuddered. "A ghost? Seriously? Maybe Cara's spirit is restless because of her tragic death."
Kelvin's eyes narrowed. "Ghosts aren't real. Someone's playing tricks."
Travis sighed, frustrated. "So, what now? Are we back to square one?"
Kelvin smirked. "Relax. If we locate her body or uncover who she was in contact with before she died, we can still find more clues."
Kelvin glanced at Travis and Arnold. "You two, start digging into everything about Cara. Talk to everyone she interacted with. She probably got paid in cash, so check with her boss."
Having a lead was a big deal. It was the only thread they had to follow, and everyone was pumped.
Kelvin then turned to Arnold. "See if you can pull up surveillance from where Cara lived three years ago."
Arnold nodded and, as he was about to leave, looked at Sienna. "Sienna, wanna come with me?"
Sienna blinked, surprised. "Why me?"
"Because you can draw. You might catch details in a silhouette."
Sienna didn't expect such praise from Arnold. Instinctively, she glanced at Kelvin.
Kelvin's long fingers tapped rhythmically on the table. Sienna noticed it sounded like the beat of a song.
Kelvin noticed her stare and slowly looked at Arnold. "Can't handle it alone? She has other tasks."
Arnold's mouth twitched, not daring to argue, and he left with his computer.
Kelvin then turned to Sienna. "The victim's family is here. See if you can get any useful info from them."
Sienna followed Kelvin out. He walked slowly, and she kept a bit of distance to avoid bumping into him.
Kelvin noticed and gritted his teeth. "Are you scared of me?"
Sienna decided not to argue with the grumpy Kelvin, took a couple of steps forward, and asked, "Do you think they're hiding something?"
"Yeah, I do."
"Then why don't you ask them yourself?"
Kelvin didn't answer right away, caught off guard by her question. By this time they had already reached the reception room.
Only the families of three victims showed up. Lally's parents were furious and had cursed the police over the phone, refusing to come. They also made it clear they wouldn't claim Lally's body.
At that moment, Anna's husband, Tom Martinez, had fainted from crying twice after finding out Anna was pregnant during their divorce.
Lexine's parents hurriedly tried to wake him up by shaking him.
Tom looked at Sienna, choking up, "It's been days, and the killer's still out there. Why are you grilling us instead of catching them?"
Lexine's parents nodded in agreement. "Yeah, our daughter's face was skinned. Poor Lexine, she cared so much about her appearance. You won't let us take her body, and you keep questioning us here. Why do you keep putting us through this pain?"
Everyone was down, eyes red, looking defeated.
The oldest of the four victims was just 25, such a young age.
Sienna could see Tom's frustration. Was it for the unborn child or his wife?
Sienna asked, "Was Anna's infidelity really the reason for your breakup?"
Tom's face tightened, his eyes flickering, and he said stubbornly, "Who can tolerate a cheating wife?"
Sienna pressed on, "Tell me in detail. How did Anna cheat?"
Before, it was Leroy who had gathered info from him. Leroy was empathetic, so when Tom cried, he didn't push for details.
Plus, Tom couldn't be the killer. He had a motive but not the means.
Tom suddenly slammed the table, eyes red, gritting his teeth. "Do I have to say it in front of everyone?"
His expression was fierce.
Then Kelvin sat down next to Sienna, stretched out his long arm, and placed it on the back of her chair, looking imposing.
Tom instantly backed down and said, "She had a one-night stand."
Before he could finish, Sienna's eyes locked on his face. She and Kelvin spoke at the same time, "You're lying."
Both were stunned. After a quick glance at each other, they looked away. Kelvin clicked his tongue.
Tom's face showed a trace of embarrassment. Sienna stared at him and said, "You don't love your wife. You're just playing the victim. Tell us the truth. If we find out you're lying, you'll be charged with obstructing justice."
Tom was scared and said, "It's because she never got pregnant. I had a mistress who did, so I set Anna up to cheat. I hired a guy to seduce her, to give me a legitimate reason for divorce. As for why she was killed, I really don’t know."
He added, "When we were going to court to finalize the divorce, she suddenly changed her mind. I don't know what happened."
Lexine's parents looked at him with disdain. "You jerk!"
Sienna frowned and said, "Anna didn't want to divorce because she found out she was pregnant, and you insisted on it, right?"
Tom's image as a good husband instantly crumbled. "But she did sleep with another man. Who knows whose child it is? And she often didn't come home that month."
It was Anna who was unfaithful. Tom felt he was right.
Sienna got the contact info of Anna's affair partner from him.
Sienna then looked at Lexine's parents. "Did Lexine show any unusual behavior before the incident?"
