Scorned

Chapter Three

Faelen’s POV

Settling into my new role was both thrilling and terrifying. I recalled the tense moment with the senior maid, the change of events and unexpected outcome that placed me right where I needed to be… in the Alpha’s quarters, the palace, and even during events.

I couldn’t believe I would be under the alpha’s nose, close enough to gather the crucial information I was sent for. The weight of my mission pressed down on me even as I thought about it. I knew that one mistake could lead to my immediate death.

Despite my closeness to the Alpha, I had yet to set eyes on him. I had not yet had the opportunity to serve him directly, but I knew it was only a matter of time for that.

Until then, I focused on my tasks, making sure that I blended in with the other servants. My duties included cleaning the Alpha’s quarters to serving food and drinks. The whole experience was unbelievable.

After a long day’s work, I returned to the servants’ quarters, a small space shared by at least fifteen girls. Exhausted, I set up my bed, ready to collapse into sleep.

As I was arranging my blanket, I noticed a familiar face approaching me, and I realized immediately that it was the girl who had been sent to the gutters at the last minute instead of me.

The expression on her face was hostile, her eyes burning with anger as she approached. “You,” she hissed, stopping right in front of me. “You’re a bitch. You offered to work in the gutters and then stole my job.”

I sighed, trying to keep my voice calm. “No You don’t understand, I only mentioned the gutters to be noticed. I didn’t mean it. And I never intended to take your place.” I said to her.

She didn’t care. “You think you’re clever, don’t you? Well, I’ll make sure your life here is miserable. You!” She exclaimed, not interested in anything I had to say.

Her words pierced me, but I couldn’t let her see my pain. “I understand you’re angry. But we’re all just trying to survive here. I never meant to hurt you.” I stated firmly with a straight face.

She leaned closer, her face inches from mine. “Survive? You don’t know the meaning of the word. But you will. I’ll make sure of that.”

With that, she turned and walked away, leaving me with a bitter feeling in my stomach. I finished setting my bed, her threats echoing in my mind.

Lying down, I stared at the ceiling, my thoughts racing. I had to remain focused on my mission despite the challenges I faced.

The following day was challenging as well. I kept my head down, doing my best to avoid further conflict with the girl or anyone else. Trouble meant attention and that would certainly bring suspicion, and I didn’t want any of that.

Each task I did, to me was an opportunity to observe and learn, taking notes of the estate and the routines of those living in it. My patience was very important, and I knew the moment would come when I’d be in the Alpha’s presence or get my hands on crucial information.

That evening, while cleaning the alpha’s outer chambers with one of the girls I worked with, I overheard whispers of conversation between two people. I guessed it was the alpha and one of his advisors perhaps.

I smartly drew closer, careful not to be caught by anyone or even the girl I was working with. When I was sure I was close enough, I listened and heard them talking about troop movements in the pack’s borders.

I was not able to grasp everything they said, just snippets of their talks that may or may not be of aby importance . My heart pounded as I secretly listened, careful not to give away my eavesdropping.

After we finished at the room and everywhere else we were assigned, I returned to the servants’ quarters that night, feeling both tired from the day’s work and a little hopeful.

I had tested my chance of listening for any information and I was glad I was getting somewhere, even though I hadn’t put together any tangible info.

I knew though that I was making progress, slowly but surely I was. Despite the hostility from the girl frustrated about her job, and the constant fear of being caught, I remained determined and focused on my mission.

I whispered a silent prayer before falling asleep, vowing to continue with carefulness. Each day would come with new challenges and opportunities, which I intend to utilize.

The next day, the senior maid gathered all the girls who worked in the alpha’s estate, responsible for caring for the residents. We stood in a line as she addressed us, her sharp eyes scanning the group.

“Listen up, girls,” she began, her voice commanding our attention. “This evening, there will be a pack gathering. You will be serving drinks and food to the members in the palace . I expect you all to be on your best behavior. Do not do anything stupid. Be fast and efficient with your tasks.”

She turned her gaze specifically to the new girls, including me. “For those of you new here, pay close attention. This is your chance to prove yourselves. Do not disappoint me.” She stated.

Her words settled in my mind and I was determined to do as she said. This would be my first time participating in such an important event, and I knew I couldn’t afford any mistakes.

The woman’s expectations were clear, and the consequences of failing in them were unthinkable. As we dispersed to prepare for the evening, I felt a bit of excitement but anxiety.

This gathering would be an opportunity for me to observe and gather more information, especially since they would be discussing the packs wellbeing I was sure. It was important that I blend in and execute my tasks well.

The hours passed quickly as we busied ourselves with preparations. The kitchen buzzed with activity, the aroma of cooking food filling the air. I joined the others in arranging plates and polishing glasses, my mind focused on the tasks ahead.

Finally, the time came for the gathering. We lined up, trays in hand, and made our way to the grand hall where the event was being held.

The room was filled with pack members, their laughter and conversations creating a lively atmosphere around. The Alpha’s presence was obvious, even though I had yet to see him.

As the evening went on, I went through the crowded hall, carefully balancing a tray of drinks. My mind was still preoccupied with what to do.

Suddenly, I collided with a solid figure, and the tray slipped from my hands. Drinks splashed all over a man in front of me.

The man’s rage was immediate. His eyes blazed with anger as he turned to face me, dripping with wine. The room fell silent, all eyes on us.

“Watch where you’re going, you clumsy idiot!” he snarled, his voice cutting through the air.

“I-I’m sorry,” I stammered, embarrassed by the attention and the mess I had caused.

“Sorry isn’t good enough,” he growled, his anger scary. “Do you have any idea who you’re dealing with?”

I glanced up, my heart pounding. The man was a striking figure, unbelievably handsome and strong looking, his presence commanding and intense. I soon realized he was the alpha.

Despite his harsh treatment, I couldn’t ignore the magnetic pull I felt towards him that moment. His piercing gaze seemed to see right through me, and for a brief moment, I thought I saw a hint of something in him, something softer, masked all the anger though

But my confusion was huge. Why was this happening? Why was I so affected by him, the Alpha of all people, and why did he seem so furious over a simple accident?

“I really am sorry,” I managed to say, my voice trembling.

“Get out of my sight before you cause any more trouble,” he snapped, turning away from me with a look of disgust.

I quickly retreated, my cheeks burning with humiliation. How could I have been so careless? I found a quiet corner to catch my breath and gather my thoughts.

I was still recovering from the encounter, my mind racing with all sorts of thoughts. Hunter’s reaction had been more than just anger. It felt personal, and that puzzled me.

As I tried to make sense of what had happened, the senior maid approached me, her expression stern. “What are you doing here, girl? You should be working, not standing like a statue!”

“I’m sorry, ma’am,” I said quickly. “It won’t happen again.”

“See that it doesn’t,” she replied curtly. “Get back to work now!”

I nodded and hurried back to my duties, determined to avoid any more trouble. I moved through the crowd, careful not to spill any more drinks.

I tried to stay away from the Alpha too, but I could feel his gaze following me everywhere I went, constantly reminding me of my blunder.
