Chapter One
EVE'S POV.
Tonight was the full moon. Everyone was in a festive mood and everywhere was beautifully decorated. Tonight was the night where unmated wolves get to find their mate and all.
My best friend, Rita, and I made our way into the open field where the festival was taking place. I let out a gasp, my lips parting and my brows widening at how splendid and pretty everything looked.
Balloons and ribbons were made to float in the air; in the middle of the stage was a statue of the moon goddess, and some of my fellow pack members moved towards it to pay their respects and drop their offerings.
Children could be seen running and chasing after one another, smiles beaming on their faces as they all enjoyed themselves.
" Finally think you will get your mate tonight?" Rita turned to question me, after grabbing a glass of wine from one of the servants scurrying around.
I took a deep breath. Well, it's no secret that I have not found my mate yet, and I doubt anyone was willing to be mated to me due to my low status as an omega.
" Not sure" I drawled, the smile on my face disappearing, turning my expression gloomy. I felt Rita pat me gently on my back as she cajoled me.
" Don't worry, everything will soon be alright my love".
" Who knows, you might get to find him tonight," She added, and I brightened up immediately, having hope.
" So, how about you, what if you find your mate tonight?" I inquired and she shrugged.
" Good for him" she commented nonchalantly, making me raise my eyebrows at her in question.
" You don't sound very excited, " I told her, and she scowled.
" Well, that's because I am not, and I sure hope I don't find him," she told me, and I gasped, my eyes growing so wide.
" No, you don't wish that for yourself, Rita. Why would you even say something like this?" I questioned her, not finding it pleasant.
" Because I already have someone I love and he loves me too, so there is no way in hell I am going to allow a mate out of nowhere to come ruin what I already have. I would rather reject him instead " she explained and then stormed off furiously, not waiting to hear my reply.
I understood her and couldn't blame her. We werewolves don't have much of a choice when it comes to the matter of love. We all have destined mates given to us by the moon goddess, and only a few lucky ones get mated to whosoever they love.
" I sure hope Rita is one of the lucky ones" I murmured to myself, looking at the moon goddess stature and praying slowly in my heart for my best friend.
A few minutes later, the festival started with the blow of the mighty trumpet, music started playing and everyone started dancing, either with their partners or their friends and since I didn't have either, with my best friend nowhere in sight, I decided to just stroll to where the foods were displayed and have my fill.
As I hurried joyfully to feed the worms in my tummy when I heard evil cackles and mockery giggles from behind me.
" Isn't it the glutton omega? I wonder what she is good for," one of them commented, and I froze, the shrimp I was about to put in my mouth, freezing as well.
" Oh please! Don't ruin my night with talks of her. Just sighting her peasant face is enough to make me want to puke" Another responded before they all snorted and walked away.
Tears gathered at the corner of my eyes and I shook, suddenly feeling the weather was not friendly. My joyful mood disappeared and my appetite vanished as well. I slowly dropped the shrimp back on the tray and made my way out of the festival to God knows where.
Probably to find Rita since she has always been my hero. Ever since my parents died, I have always been the subject of mockery and laughter. It became even worse when I was discovered to be an omega.
No one wanted to mingle with me, they all pushed me aside like I was some sort of virus that might infect them. Only Rita requested to be my friend and treated me kindly. As I was often bullied, she was always there to protect and fight for me.
I could never bear to lose her. I was still looking around for her but didn't find her.
' Didn't she walk towards this direction or had she turned back into the party when I wasn't looking?' I pondered and decided to go back to the festival to find her.
I was about to turn when the most alluring, delicious, and tempting scent hit me. My body immediately went rigid, my senses screaming at me to find out who had the scent.
I started to feel the heat and just needed whosoever had that scent to warm me. My weak wolf, Shirley, came alive in my head and growled while flipping around happily in my head.
" Mate, mate, that's mate, find a mate," She ordered, nudging me forward, and my feet began to move on their own as I sniffled the air, trying to figure out where the scent was coming from.
Meanwhile, bubbles rumbled in my tummy, a feeling of excitement running through me. Finally, I found him. I couldn't wait. I increased my pace and got to a corner but then froze when I heard a familiar giggle followed by a moan.
" Yes, Bryan. Yes". My wolf kept nudging me to move on, probably wondering why I stopped. I moved and saw two figures in the dark, kissing and pleasuring one another.
A male and a female. The female was Rita, my best friend, and the male was no one other than.
" MATE" Shirley screamed happily in my head. The realization drowned in me, and I let out a low gasp as I discovered the guy my best friend was so much in love with was my mate
I reared backward from too much shock, tripped, and fell with a loud thud to the ground. This noise distracted both my mate and Rita, who immediately tried covering themselves once they saw me.
" Eve" Rita called out, the thin lines of her brows jumping up in surprise, her hands shaking as she tried to zip up her skirt before hurrying over towards me
" Are you alright? What are you doing? Why on earth couldn't you stay at the damn party and just had to look for me? Can't you get a life?" All the questions she was asking got drained out as I wasn't paying attention to her.
I was just staring at him, looking at him and so he was. His fists clenched, his eyes had rage brewing and I knew he knew. Veins bulged out of his heavy arms and forehead, and it seemed like he was battling with his wolf who probably wanted to come to me.
I knew because mine was urging me to go to him. Tears streamed out of my eyes and rolled down my cheeks to my lips. I could taste the salt in them.
Why, of all men in the world it had to be my friend's lover? I couldn't see him clearly as he was still in the dark, but then he came into the light, and I almost screamed from shock, my legs wobbling, at who I was seeing.
' Moon goddess, why must you be so unfair?' I screamed in my heart, feeling it sneeze in pain.
