Chapter Six
EVE’S POV
With each step I took to my room, a burning sensation spread across my side. A feeling that drove my determination to leave the pack. Next time it will be my head they will come for. How could I have been blinded to not see Rita’s game of pretense? Why am I realizing that now? I must be the dumb Omega.
A series of emotions swirl within me as memories of Rita and I flood my mind.
She was never nice to me, always quick to get mad at me, and I was always the one to beg her. I hated myself more, a weak wolfless Omega that was desperate for love. It will all end now, I will be leaving the pack for good.
“Then you should come with us,” Damien’s voice echoed in my head again, making me rethink my decision to refuse to follow them. I pushed back the thought into the back of my mind. It would be a shame to live in the house of the men I had a one-stand with, after being called a whore by the whole pack. It will prove Rita’s false point and I am not willing to stain my name.
I quickened my pace to my room, without looking back. With my hands on my side, I guided my steps, an aid to support my wobbling legs and heavy eyes. The air around me began to feel thinner by the minute as I walked, my eyes became blurry, unable to see these figures in front of me. My body was ready to succumb to the excruciating pain, but I wasn't ready to be the pack’s laughing stock again. I needed to reach my room before I passed out in the hallway.
I pushed and pushed further almost overwhelmed by the pain but never gave up till I got to my door. Frantically, I opened the door, and entered, shutting the door behind me.
My head began to spin as though it knew I was in the room already, the room felt like a whirlwind closing in on me, my throat constricted, and an ache threatened the back of my throat. A sudden spasm of dire pain kicked at my sides and I lost balance. Both knees hit the ground with a loud thud, but I didn't seem to care about the pain I felt but the pain crawled up my sides rapidly.
My heart pulse increased, with it threatening to rip itself out of my chest.
I clutched my chest tightly but the pain didn't stop, my head joined the train, giving me a splitting headache and I lost myself to the cold welcoming darkness. The ceiling moved as I fell, with my head hitting the floor hard and my eyes gazed at the ceiling till it disappeared out of sight.
No one came to my resume rescue nor bothered to check my room for the loud sound my head made when it met the floor.
The sun dipped down below the horizon, spreading long shadows across the face of the earth. The once powerful bright rays were now dim. It was almost time for the moon to shine her light on the earth, after the Sun’s withdrawal.
I jumped down from the fence to the other side, outside the pack house. Pain surged through my body as I landed on my sides, and I rolled down till a stone stopped my rapid movement. Low grunts escaped my lips between clenched teeth. I gathered up my last strength to stand up from the ground, it was painful but necessary. It was getting late, and the chance of encountering a rogue in the late hours of the night was high.
My heavy feet sprinted into the woods. No direction of where I was running to. Maybe to the nearest pack village. I can rest up there for the night and continue my journey. The dry twinges on the ground snapped beneath my feet as I ran, tree grazed past me in a blur.
I ran till I was losing my breath, but I wouldn't stop. My life depended on my escape. I found myself on a stranded highway, no being nor cars were on the road.
It almost killed my determination but it was stronger than I imagined.
The distant sound of an engine caught my attention. It was coming from behind me. A mixture of fear and excitement spread through my body. What if they have noticed my absence? No, it wasn't that important for them to take notice that I wasn't in the pack house anymore. If it is not them, I can beg the stranger to give me a ride to wherever.
The sound grew closer from behind and I lessened my pace, looking back to see if there was something there or just my imagination pulling tricks on me. But I was right, there was a vehicle driving on the empty road.
I pulled the hood of my cloak to cover my face as I hailed the car to stop. It was a truck bearing farm produce. The driver saw my signal and stopped.
He looked shabby and dangerous like a serial killer. His aura was ominous, creating a thick tension between us. I was scared but was ready to risk following the man. I would rather die than go back.
“How may I be of help to you, young lady and what are you doing walking all alone on this road?” He quizzed, his brows arched in a puzzled manner. The stranger’s voice sounded nothing like how I had expected it to be. It was low-laced with meekness. I had expected it to be hostile.
“I—I need…. Can you give me a ride?” I stuttered. His arch went higher, and a scowl spread across his face but was suddenly replaced with a sweet smile. His facial expressions need to be studied. I searched his eyes intently, as I waited for his response.
“Hop in,” He replied after a long moment of silence. I ran immediately and climbed onto the passenger’s seat beside him before he changed his mind. “Where are you going?”
I turned to my side to face him, his eyes were fixed on the road and his hands steadied on the steering wheel. “Anywhere you go,”
