Chapter 6 Reunion After a Long Separation
Daisy was totally clueless about what was going on. Seeing James glued to the woman on the screen, she felt a stab of jealousy and pretended to be upset. "Emma's never liked strangers. If she wants to see this woman, it must be because she did something to her!"
Noticing James's weird reaction, Daisy took a closer look at the woman in the video and was shocked. She muttered, "This woman looks like Charlotte."
The more she stared, the more uneasy she got. A sense of urgency bubbled up inside her, and she tried to stir the pot. "She's doing this on purpose, trying to mess with you, James. You need to put her in her place!"
Daisy thought to herself, 'If only she could be driven away again.'
But James quickly shut down Daisy's speculation, his voice firm. "Enough. Not every woman is Charlotte. I think you're losing it. Maybe you should get your eyes checked. Get out, this is none of your business." James instinctively denied that the woman in the video was Charlotte and scolded Daisy, sending her away.
Daisy was startled by his strong reaction and felt a bit resentful, but she still apologized softly. "I'm sorry. Maybe I was mistaken. Please don't send me away."
However, James showed no sympathy, his sharp gaze fixed on Daisy as he sneered. "Don't make me say it again."
Daisy, frightened by his tone and knowing James wasn't joking, weighed her options and finally forced a smile. "Okay, don't be mad. I'm leaving." As soon as she finished speaking, she turned and left, her eyes brimming with malice and hatred for Charlotte.
Every time she mentioned Charlotte, James would get angry.
Watching Daisy leave, James turned his gaze back to the surveillance video.
He was certain that the woman was Charlotte.
Thinking of this, he clenched his fists, his eyes filled with painful restraint.
Soon, he sent a message to Dean, asking him to check the hospital's surveillance for Charlotte.
However, after waiting for three hours, Dean finally responded, "Mr. Martin, we can't find her. It seems her whereabouts are deliberately hidden."
James hung up the phone with an expressionless face, feeling a surge of frustration. He then looked at the woman in the video, his gaze growing more determined.
He thought, 'Charlotte. No matter where you are, I will find you.'
James then left his study and went to Emma's room.
Seeing him, Emma rushed over, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Daddy."
James hugged Emma tightly, his voice strained. "I'm sorry. I couldn't find out where she is."
Upon hearing this, Emma nodded sadly and then pushed James out of the room with all her strength.
Meanwhile, Charlotte had returned home with Andy and Noah. After settling in, she planned to get them back to school.
Charlotte glanced at Ava, who was sitting beside her, and asked for her assistance. "Ava, I'm not very familiar with things here yet. Could you help me find a suitable kindergarten for Andy and Noah? They're at the age where they should be in school, and they need to interact with kids their age."
Hearing this, Ava wasn't surprised by this and happily guaranteed, "Leave it to me. I'll find the best kindergarten for them."
Charlotte nodded, feeling relieved.
The next day, Charlotte received a notice to go to the Veritas Institute for Medical Innovation.
The people at Veritas had already been informed, so Charlotte had no trouble smoothly taking over.
Alex Cooper accompanied her to the handover ceremony. The Veritas Institute was full of young people.
When Brad informed Charlotte about taking over Veritas, he had Alex return early to manage things, making it easier for her to take over.
Alex was a year ahead of Charlotte in school and had been working with Brad on research since graduation. After she married James, Alex occasionally contacted her to convey Brad's messages and express his regret for her situation. When Charlotte got divorced, Alex was the first to reach out, taking her to see Brad.
Over the past six years, Alex had been a huge help, both in research and in life.
Besides, Noah and Andy often speculated whether Alex had a thing for her.
Standing side by side, Alex and Charlotte made a striking pair. A lively young woman couldn't help but tease, "Charlotte and Alex look so good together. They're a perfect match."
Another woman chimed in, "Yeah, one is reserved, the other is gentle. They're made for each other. It would be a shame if they weren't together."
Charlotte heard the teasing but brushed it off with a smile. "You guys are young and should be concentrating on your careers. Making money should bring you happiness, not gossip," she said.
Yet Alex's gaze never left Charlotte. Hearing her words, his eyes momentarily lost their brightness but quickly regained their usual clarity.
It was Charlotte's first day at work, and following tradition, a welcome party was scheduled for that evening.
Charlotte tried to decline several times but eventually had to join everyone at a bar to celebrate.
They ate and drank together, and the atmosphere was pleasant.
Charlotte watched them play around, a smile on her lips.
Midway through, she went to the restroom to freshen up.
Maybe it was the drinks, or maybe the bar was just too lively, but Charlotte didn't pay much attention to the people coming and going.
She thought, 'This bar isn't upscale, so I didn't expect to see James here.'
As she stepped into the bathroom, the bright yellow light was blinding and helped to clear some of her intoxication.
Charlotte shook her head.
Why would she think of him?
Suddenly, someone grabbed her wrist.
Charlotte's eyes widened, and she was about to shout when a familiar voice rang in her ears. "It's me; don't scream."
Charlotte's body stiffened for a moment, then she turned to see the face she once knew so well.
Pain flashed in her eyes, but her expression remained cold.
"James, let go of me. What do you want?" she said.
James had a private meeting at this bar tonight. After a few drinks, he felt dizzy and decided to go to the restroom to clear his head. As he pushed open the restroom door, he was about to wash his hands when he saw a familiar figure in the mirror. His heart skipped a beat. James had imagined countless scenarios of running into Charlotte again.
He had thought about what to say first, but hearing Charlotte's cold words in reality made him furious.
He grabbed Charlotte's shoulders, pressing her against the wall, his eyes red with anger.
He retorted, "Charlotte, you heartless woman!"
Charlotte struggled fiercely and said, "I don't know what you're talking about. We're done. Let go of me."
James refused, tightening his grip. Feeling the increased pressure, Charlotte reflexively slapped him.
Then, both of them froze in place, and time seemed to come to a standstill for a second.
The pain snapped Charlotte back to reality. She took advantage of James's momentary shock and bolted.
Back in the private room, she felt her heart still racing. Reflecting on what had just happened, she felt a sense of unease.
Grabbing her bag, she apologized quickly, "Sorry, I'm not feeling well. I need to leave. I'll treat everyone to a meal another day to make up for it."
Without waiting for a response, she hurried out.
No way was she sticking around to risk James catching up to her.
Alex quickly followed Charlotte.
Watching them leave, the team members were excited.
"Alex is so obvious. It's clear he likes Charlotte."
"Totally. They make a great couple."
Charlotte fled in a panic, looking quite disheveled.
