CHAPTER 3 Who Save Me?

Amelia's POV.

"Don't even get me started, his marriage to you was him merely following his grandfather's plan to secure his inheritance and position in the company," Rose said provocatively to me.

We were standing side by side, each holding a glass of wine in front of a large pool in a luxurious mansion. We were at the Wright's family house and it's been three whole years since the incident with Marcus.

Three years and nothing had changed between us. Unfortunately, I had to admit that Rose was right, my marriage to Marcus was still that of convenience and even though I had agreed to the marriage that day because I thought I could make him look at me the way he looked at Rose; I realized I was wrong and that nothing would change his attitude.

He wasn't kidding when he told me sternly that he would never love me on the first day.

I decided to take a break to ease my aching heart so I traveled for a few days, only for me to return back to the country to find out that Rose had returned too and moved in with Marcus under the flimsy disguise of having nowhere else to stay.

Nothing hurt more than seeing that Rose still held such influence over Marcus and that he was still head over heels in love with her but I wasn't going to let her talk down on me in my own home.

If there was one thing I had learnt over the years, it was always to stand up for myself in the Wright's household because no one would do it for me, not even my own husband.

"That doesn't change the fact that I am still his wife." I clapped back at her and was satisfied when she frowned heavily because it meant I had managed to get on her nerves.

She took a step closer, a move that brought her so close to me that I could hear her rapid breaths, "You're only his wife on a piece of document he was forced to sign. So it's just a title."

"Regardless of that title or not, I am his wife and as his wife, I would like to let you know that I do not appreciate you hanging around my husband scantily dressed. I suggest you get your own house before I order the guards to throw you out of my matrimonial home." I threatened and she scoffed.

But I knew she didn't take my threat lightly because the look on her face made it so obvious that she wasn't pleased with the words I was saying.

"This isn't your home, you don't make the decisions around here, Marcus does and we both know who owns Marcus' heart." She shot back with a grin and I stood up to her with such confidence that amazed me.

"Trust me, Rose, I am not the kind of person you go toe to toe with so I suggest you get out of here while you still can before I show you the other side of me that you definitely won't like."

The other side of me I was referring to was the part of me that was a Knight through and through. I might have lived with a fake identity all these while and cut off contact with my family but that doesn't mean I no longer know who I am. If she knew the real me, she wouldn't even be able to stand in my presence, let alone talking to me.

"Just because they bought you some expensive clothes and send you abroad, you think you can talk to me anyhow you please? You're nothing but a tramp who seduced Marcus and teamed up with his grandfather to force him into a marriage." She paused and looked me over with such hatred in her eyes.

"I have no idea what you did to win the old man over or how you managed to get him to play along but one thing I know is that he is gone now and there's no one to make Marcus continue this charade you call marriage."

She had intended to spite me with her words but she had no idea that I was about to turn the table around and it wasn't in her favor.

"But if you think about it…." My voice trailed off as I pretended to be lost in thought for a second, it made the whole thing look very dramatic, "it's been a while since I lost my father-in-law."

"So?"

"Like you said, there is no one forcing him to put up with our marriage now so why hasn't he filed for a divorce or asked me to leave yet?"

"Just think about it, does it mean that regardless of that fact, Marcus would choose to stay with me rather than the woman who took a cheque and eloped without a single glance backwards," I added.

I had expected my words to enrage her but not to the extent that she would grab my hair with such force that I yelped out in pain because it felt like she was about to rip all my hair out.

She didn't let go, she continued pulling until I slammed my foot on her leg and shoved her backwards. She stopped pulling but didn't let go so when she tumbled backwards into the pool in front of me, I went in with her.

A loud splash was all I could hear as I felt my body hit the water. Slowly, we sank into the water.

"Help!" We both yelled in unison as we slapped our hands against the water while we struggled to stay afloat until someone showed up.

"Marcus help!" Rose yelled and I saw him rush out of the main building. It was at that moment that I noticed that there was no one around, the few guests that had been here had left and it was almost dusk.

For some reason, I wanted to see who Marcus would save first. After three years with him, one would expect his heart to have softened a little towards me but to my dismay, he jumped into the water and swam towards Rose instantly.

I had no clue why it hurt this bad that my chest ached. I should be used to it by now, the blatant disrespect and his continuous disregard for my presence but no matter how many times it happened, I never got used to it.

"Oh my God Marcus, that bitch tried to kill me." Rose cried out as she coughed loudly and clung to his body. Marcus shot me a glare but made no attempt to rescue me.

Rose was a good swimmer, I noticed that earlier before the party started when she went for a swim so I wondered why she needed Marcus to save her. Oh well…she had always had a flare for the dramatics.

Unlike Rose, I wasn't faking mine. Since I was a child, I have been unable to swim and things became so much worse for me after I almost drowned at a lake where my family had visited during the summer.

I was helplessly drowning and my husband was in the arms of another after three years of being married to him. Three years of being dedicated and devoted to him, three years of giving up on my family just to be with him and this is all I get.

The pain tore through my chest and it stung far greater than the rest. The water coupled with the scene before me made it so difficult for me to breathe. I wanted to call out his name, to at least say something with my dying breath because my entire life was now flashing before me and it is said that you're close to death when things like that happen.

But the words wouldn't come out. I felt myself going under, giving up to the pressure and giving in to the pull to sink to the bottom.

As I struggled to stay afloat, a task that had now proven a failure, I caught sight of Rose as she pressed her lips against Marcus and he didn't push her away; instead, he pulled her closer and kissed her deeply.

I am thrashing around wildly and stretching out my hand for him to take it but he doesn't and no one else does.

How was he not aware that a woman he had been married to for three years now couldn't swim? I wondered if his negligence was intentional or if he really didn't know.

I knew I was just trying to bring up excuses for him but it didn't matter to me. I had always known that Marcus despised me but I didn't think he would watch me die while he made out with his woman.

Tired of fighting and since my muscles had begun to ache, I gave up and allowed myself to go under. With a deep breath, I squeezed my eyes shut as I felt the water swallow me whole.

Darkness and water are the only things that surround me. I was waiting for the light that would signify it had ended when I felt someone grab onto my still outstretched hand and with one swift pull, I was out of the water.

I gasped as I gulped in a large amount of air. My chest heaved heavily and I struggled to adjust to the oxygen when I noticed that the hand that pulled me out of the water wasn't Marcus because he was still in the pool with Rose in his arms.

So if he didn't save me, then who did?
