CHAPTER 5: Reunite

It felt like someone had struck me hard on the head, and my whole body suddenly became dizzy.

"You…You…Why is it…"

I couldn't even speak clearly. The reason I chose to move to this city was to avoid seeing him again. Yet now, here he was, standing right in front of me.

"You've got the wrong person! I don't know you!"

I tried to stay calm and slammed the door shut. Unfortunately, my speed and strength were no match for Alain's. He was faster than me and held the door firmly.

"Elwyn, if you don't know me, then why are you reacting so strongly?"

Alain stared into my eyes as he spoke, his expression as if he wanted to devour me alive.

Over the past five years, I had endured countless hardships alone, but I had never felt as frightened as I did now. I was terrified, truly terrified. Not because I feared he would harm me or take away my wealth, but because I feared he would take Dennis from me. Yes, Dennis is my child, but he's also Alain's son. How could I trust a despicable person like Alain not to take Dennis from me?

"Alain, there's nothing left to say between us. Everything ended five years ago, now leave."

"Is that so? Is there really nothing left to say between us? Then what about the child in the yard? Don't you think you owe me an explanation?"

As he spoke, he pointed towards Dennis. My entire body went numb; the thing I feared most was happening step by step. I knew he wouldn't let me go, but when he mentioned Dennis, I still couldn't help but tremble.

Alain and I didn't just meet yesterday; I was one of the few people who truly understood his character. There's a reason he became chairman before turning thirty. If anyone is ruthless and cunning, it's Alain. If he's determined to take Dennis away, he won't hesitate to play dirty tricks.

"Alain, I'll say it again: everything between us ended long ago. There's nothing more to discuss!"

I hadn't even finished speaking when a cold, disdainful smile appeared on his lips—one that anyone would find repulsive.

"Aren't you curious why I'm here? You know my nature; if I want answers, a few simple actions are all it takes."

Alain's presence here gave me the answer—I knew he had been investigating me. Even after five years, he still wouldn't let me go.

"You've been investigating me, I know that."

I had to grip the doorframe to keep myself standing. Alain was the worst nightmare of my life. The longer I faced him, the harder it was to breathe. Pain, humiliation, anger, fear—all the negative emotions flooded back at once. Just when I thought I couldn't breathe any longer, a soft hand gently touched mine. It was Dennis—he held my hand tightly.

"Mom, are you okay?"

Dennis's soft voice was like medicine for my heart. Yes, I couldn't show any weakness. I still had Dennis, and if I showed any weakness, that man might really take my son away.

"Thank you, my son. I'm fine. Maybe it's just the cold weather making me feel unwell."

I quickly came up with an excuse for Dennis.

"But mom, when I was playing outside, this man came up to me. He said he was your husband and my father. What's going on?"

"Dennis, don't listen to what strangers say."

I said as I pulled Dennis behind me, I would never let Alain take Dennis from me. Never! Those words, "father," "husband"—how ridiculous! They didn't move me at all; instead, they filled me with disgust and nausea. What I hated most in this world was that my son shared half of his blood with the despicable, treacherous beast in front of me.

Alain didn't bother pretending to be gentle or kind anymore. He stepped forward and pulled Dennis towards him. My small body couldn't shield Dennis. The boy cried out in pain as the stranger yanked him roughly.

"Mommy, mommy, it hurts!"

Hearing this, Alain immediately let go. He wanted to bend down and hold his son, but Dennis, frightened, ran behind me to hide.

Dennis's cries were like a sharp knife cutting into my heart. It hurt, it hurt so much. From the day he was born, I had showered Dennis with endless love, yet today, the "stranger" who met him for the first time had already caused him pain. I hated, I hated it so much. If I had the strength, I would tear him apart!

"That's enough! We really ended five years ago!"

I looked him straight in the eye and shouted. If Dennis weren't here, I would have slapped him. As an ex-wife, he deserved that slap, but as a mother, I couldn't let my son see me hit someone. I wouldn't do that.

When standing in front of me, facing my harsh words, he should have felt some sense of shame or regret for what happened years ago. But no, his face showed none of that. Instead, he yelled back at me.

"Elwyn, the one who should be yelling here is me, not you! You hid Dennis from me for five years!"

"Yes, you kept our son from me for five years! During these five years, you made Dennis live without a father, and you made me go five years without seeing my son!" He grabbed my collar and roared, his face turning visibly red.

Alain, that bastard, turned himself into the victim, placing all the blame on me. He spoke as if everything I had endured was justifiable, and even his infidelity was something I had to accept. Hiding Dennis from him was my crime, and to him, that's all that mattered!

I forcefully pushed his hand away. I was neither his employee nor his wife anymore. Now, Elwyn and Alain were just strangers. There was no reason for me to endure him any longer.

"Alain, Dennis is my child, only mine! He has nothing to do with you!"

"From the moment you did that disgusting thing, there was nothing between us anymore! We're done!" I spat out every word with venom.
