Chapter 6 I'm Just in It for the Money
Seeing Katherine stay quiet, Dorothy got even more fired up. "We all know the Wilson family is about to go under. You're just marrying Howard to get your hands on the Martinez family's money!"
Dorothy's eyes sparkled with spite, looking every bit like someone enjoying their moment of victory.
Drew chimed in, making things worse. "Katherine, the Martinez family doesn't want you and won't help the Wilson family. If you have any pride, you'd leave now."
The two of them were like a tag team.
"Yeah! The Martinez family's money didn't just fall from the sky. Who do you think you are to go after it?"
"That's how regular families are, always chasing after money."
"Why are you still here? You're a nuisance!"
Voices of curses kept buzzing in Katherine's ears, each accusation more grating than the last. These so-called relatives, hiding behind their fake smiles, masking judgmental scowls—who were they to cast stones?
Katherine smirked. "If you can, find a woman who doesn't care about money to marry into the family."
Dorothy was taken aback. She didn't expect Katherine to admit she was there for the money so boldly.
Drew's face turned pale, his angry eyes fixed on Katherine. "You think you can shamelessly stay here? Dream on. Howard already has someone he likes. Once she comes back, you won't stand a chance!"
Katherine had heard about it before she came. It wasn't exactly a secret in high society.
Katherine glanced at Drew, her eyes calm and steady. "Really?"
"Of course!" Dorothy's eyebrows shot up in triumph. "Howard only has her in his heart. You're just taking advantage of Howard's condition to sneak in!"
A cold glint flashed in Katherine's eyes as she stared at Dorothy. "If Howard likes that woman so much, why didn't you let her marry him?"
Dorothy looked at Drew, panicking. Drew frowned, stepping in front of Dorothy protectively. "If it weren't for the Wilson family's scheming to marry you in, she would have married into the Martinez family long ago. How could it be your turn?"
The contempt in his voice and the disdainful look made it seem like Katherine was some discarded trash.
Katherine sneered, standing up and walking towards Drew. Stopping a foot and a half away, she smiled. "I remember the woman Howard likes disappeared without a trace after learning he became a vegetable. Can you still contact her?"
Drew was shocked, turning to look at Dorothy, speaking in a low voice, "How does she know?"
Dorothy shook her head, clutching Drew's sleeve tightly, her eyes filled with malice. "What do we do?"
Drew pursed his lips, his eyes darting around.
Katherine had been watching them, finding their whispering amusing. Looking at the other relatives, she asked, "Does anyone else not know that the woman Howard likes ran away faster than anyone? If you want to bring her back to marry Howard, I have no objection, but can you find her?"
Everyone was speechless.
When Howard's beloved heard the news, she bolted immediately, deleting and blocking all contact information of anyone associated with Howard. Not to mention contacting her, they didn't even know where she was now.
Bringing up the woman Howard liked was just a ploy, but Katherine had flipped it on them, leaving everyone with mixed reactions.
Seeing no one could respond, Katherine snorted and sat back down. "What a shame. Looks like I'll have to keep being Mrs. Martinez."
The room went ice-cold. Everyone exchanged glances, but no one could argue with Katherine.
Drew's face twisted with disgust and anger. "Shameless!"
With Drew leading, the other relatives started to hurl insults.
"Exactly! What kind of lady talks like that?"
"Howard can't marry someone like her. Get her out of here!"
Katherine had initially wanted to reason with them, but now it seemed pointless.
"What's all the racket?" A strong voice cut through the relatives' curses. Gloria, leaning on a cane, stormed in with an imposing presence. "I'm not dead yet! What are you all arguing about?"
With Gloria's arrival, the relatives immediately quieted down.
Her cold gaze swept over everyone, finally landing on Katherine. "Katherine, come here."
Katherine walked over and held her hand.
"Did they bully you?" Gloria asked.
Katherine glanced at the now-silent relatives, smirking sarcastically.
"Grandma, they said Howard has someone he likes, and I only married him because of money. They said I took advantage of him."
"Nonsense!" Gloria's cloudy eyes became clear, staring directly at everyone present. "Who said this nonsense?"
No one dared to admit it, all the relatives lowered their heads, not even daring to meet Gloria's eyes.
Katherine unceremoniously laughed, helping Gloria to sit down. "Grandma, can you contact the woman Howard likes? They implied she would come back to Howard one day. Please, give a call to the person Howard fancied and ask if she was only in it for the good times and not the bad, and if she ran away alone the moment Howard fell ill!"
Gloria glanced at Katherine, her eyes full of appreciation. She had initially worried Katherine would be bullied by these distant relatives, but now it seemed she had underestimated Katherine. "Carol, call that person."
The person who came with Gloria was Carol Porter, Gloria's long-time housekeeper.
Carol put the call on speaker, and a weak female voice came through. "Hello, what is it?"
Carol's face remained expressionless. "Miss, are you willing to marry our Mr. Martinez?"
There was a moment of silence on the other end before a guilty voice responded. "Carol, hasn't Howard already married? You want me to marry a vegetative person? No way!"
Carol didn't waste words, hanging up and looking at Gloria. Gloria's cane hit the floor with a crisp sound. "Did you all hear that?"
The relatives lowered their heads even more.
Gloria snorted coldly, sternly scolding, "Today, I'll make it clear, Katherine is Howard's wife. Whether it's inheriting our wealth or using our money, it's all justified!"
"Mrs. Martinez!" Drew hurried over, unable to hide the urgency in his tone. "She's an outsider! You can't just say things like that!"
Katherine frowned, pushing away Drew who was trying to approach.
"My marriage certificate with Howard is right there. If I'm not family, then are you, someone with no real connection?"
