Chapter 2 Give Me an Explanation

The next day, Daphne showed up at the company right on time. After knocking out her tasks, she stared at her computer for a bit before finally printing out a resignation letter.

When she handed it to HR, the guy looked pretty stressed.

"Ms. Sullivan, does Mr. Anderson know you're quitting?"

Daphne replied, "I'll let him know later."

HR shook his head, "Sorry, I can't approve this. Any changes in the president's office need Mr. Anderson's okay first."

Yeah, that was the rule.

Daphne didn't push it. She took the resignation letter back to her office, and soon enough, a bunch of company execs were around her, "Ms. Sullivan, where's Mr. Anderson? We need him to sign some urgent documents."

"Mr. Anderson isn't here?" Daphne was surprised.

She hadn't had a chance to check in with Lewis that morning. She told them to hang tight and tried calling him, but no luck after several tries.

Thinking about how he'd been MIA since last night, Daphne started to worry.

She grabbed the documents from the execs and headed straight to Lewis's place.

Upon arrival, without hesitation, she entered the password to gain access. Glancing around, she noticed the absence of anyone, assuming he might still be asleep.

Daphne pushed open the bedroom door, "Mr. Anderson..."

At the sound of her voice, her gaze fixated on the intertwined figures on the bed. She didn't know if she was too early or too late, but the two were a mess and very close.

Daphne's mind went blank, and she instinctively backed out of the room.

The scene was burned into her brain, replaying over and over, making her heart ache.

"Come in." After a while, Lewis's deep voice came from inside.

Daphne hesitated, then opened the door. She saw him standing by the bed with a cold look, his dark shirt unbuttoned, showing off his sexy Adam's apple and collarbone.

"What are you doing here?" he asked, looking at her indifferently.

Did he think she was interrupting?

Daphne's hand trembled slightly at her side. She lowered her eyes and said softly, "There are important documents at the company that need your signature. I tried calling you but couldn't get through, so I had to come over."

"I'm sorry, I meant well but messed up." Emily had finished dressing. She wore a light blue Chanel suit, her golden curls draped over her shoulders, and a mole at the corner of her eye added a touch of allure to her innocent look.

Seeing this, Daphne was reminded of the countless nights she and Lewis had been close, how he would always caress the corner of her eye and kiss her faint mole.

Because of this, Daphne sometimes thought he had feelings for her.

But now, seeing the almost identical mole at the corner of Emily's eye, she realized she had been fooling herself all along.

Emily apologized, "It was too late last night. I wanted Lewis to get a good sleep, so I turned off his phone. Sorry."

As she spoke, she glanced at Daphne, then turned to Lewis and said playfully, "You should tell your secretary not to be mad."Lewis's face showed clear impatience, "Get out."

Emily didn't seem bothered. Just then, her phone rang, and she turned to leave.

As she passed by Daphne, she gave her a knowing smile.

Daphne lowered her eyes. After Emily left, she handed the documents to Lewis, "These are the papers for the suburban project development. I've reviewed them, and everything looks good."

Lewis grabbed a pen to sign the documents. As he reached the final one, his eyes suddenly halted.

Then, his cold gaze fell on her, making Daphne feel a heavy sense of pressure, "Ms. Sullivan, what is this?"

Daphne's eyes fell on her resignation letter, and she said softly, "As you can see, I'm resigning."

"Resigning?" Lewis echoed, his demeanor growing even more frigid, "Why?"

The question was short, but the anger in his words was clear, making Daphne instinctively shiver. She took a deep breath, steadied her emotions, and said, "I want a change of scenery."

Lewis said, "The Anderson Group's environment isn't good?"

"It's fine," Daphne replied.

As Lewis's secretary, she had a lot of freedom, and her salary and bonuses were more than enough to support her plans to move abroad.

"Then why change?" Lewis pressed.

Daphne felt a bit flustered. After a moment of thought, she smiled and looked up, "Because I've been here too long, it's getting boring, so I want a new lifestyle."

She paused and added, "I also want some personal space after work."

Following Lewis over the years, Daphne had to be on call 24/7. Whenever he needed her, she had to be ready to leave immediately. She believed he understood what she meant.

Sure enough, Lewis's expression turned completely cold.

His gaze was sharp. After a moment of silence, he spoke coldly, "Finish the current project before you leave."

Hearing his response, Daphne felt a mix of relief and disappointment. She had thought that after all these years, Lewis might try to persuade her to stay.

She quickly dismissed this ridiculous idea and nodded, "Okay."

Lewis signed the documents swiftly, not looking at her again. But his furrowed brows indicated his bad mood.

At this moment, Emily returned after her call and smiled at Lewis, "Lewis, Gloria invited us to dinner at the Golden Crown Hotel later."

She then looked at Daphne, "Ms. Sullivan, why don't you join us?"

It didn't make sense for her to join their family dinner. Daphne politely declined, "I have a meeting with a client today. Miss Garcia and Mr. Anderson should go ahead."

Hearing this, Lewis's eyes darkened. Was she so eager to leave?

A strange sense of irritation settled in his chest. He didn't want to look at Daphne anymore and walked out.

Emily looked regretful, "Alright then, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you. After all, you've taken good care of Lewis all these years."

Daphne smiled, "It's my duty."

"Not at all," Emily said with a smile, "A secretary has their own responsibilities. The stuff you've been handling goes above and beyond. I hope you don't get any ideas. Lewis is just like that—once he gets used to working with someone, he's too lazy to look for someone else. He doesn't mean anything by it."
