Chapter 5 Resignation
Lewis's face turned dark in an instant. He set Daphne down on the sofa and stormed out, slamming the door behind him.
As he left, another offer popped up on his phone screen.
In the early morning light, Daphne slowly opened her eyes, still groggy.
She felt like she'd been hit by a truck, her whole body aching.
As memories of the previous night's madness came flooding back, her cheeks turned a deep shade of red.
Daphne patted her face, trying to clear her head. She looked around and realized she was at home.
She glanced down and noticed she was on the sofa, not in bed.
A wave of bitterness washed over her. Daphne clutched the blanket tightly, and a tear slipped from the corner of her eye.
She wiped the tear away gently, as if trying to comfort herself, "Don't cry, you two were never meant to be, and besides, Lewis already has a fiancée."
Daphne closed her eyes for a moment, then took a deep breath and stood up from the sofa.
Her legs wobbled, and she almost fell, but she managed to grab the sofa for support.
An hour later, Daphne arrived at the office.
Walking down the hallway, she had a bad feeling.
"Ms. Sullivan, you're finally here." A female colleague, Lally Hall, rushed up to her.
Daphne noticed the sweat on her forehead and asked, confused, "What's wrong, Lally?"
Lally hesitated, then whispered something in her ear.
Daphne's eyes widened, and her hands clenched at her sides.
She bit her lip, trying to stay calm, "Okay, I get it."
Daphne quickly walked to Lewis's office. Just as she was about to open the door, she took a deep breath, calmed herself, and walked in with a blank expression.
Lewis heard the sound of her heels, paused his typing, then continued.
Daphne walked up to him and asked slowly, "Mr. Anderson, I heard you canceled the collaboration?" Her voice shook slightly, finding it hard to believe.
Lewis finally stopped what he was doing. He folded his hands and looked up at her, "So what if I did? Got a problem with that?" His voice was cold and unyielding.
Hearing his confirmation, Daphne's nails dug into her palms. She spoke with a hint of anger, "Mr. Anderson! Why? Do you know how much this collaboration means to us?"
The collaboration she had worked so hard to secure was canceled just like that. What did he think her efforts were worth?
Lewis didn't get angry. He crossed his legs, rested his chin on one hand, and looked at her with an air of superiority. He spoke casually.
"I don't see how it could be of much help to us!" He stretched out his words, "But it might be for you. Pick a better one, not this kind of trash."
Daphne frowned, confused, "What do you mean by that?"
Lewis bit his lip and gave her a playful look, "You really don't know, Ms. Sullivan?"
They stood there in silence, neither speaking, the office so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
Daphne's mind was racing, but she couldn't make sense of it. "I don't get what you mean, Mr. Anderson. This collaboration was tough to secure! Do you know..."
"Tough to secure? Daphne, let me ask you, how did you secure it?" Lewis's face, usually so composed, showed a rare flash of anger.
Then, just as quickly, his expression shifted back to normal, a sly smile playing on his lips. "I never thought Ms. Sullivan would still go for that kind of person after being with me!" If she listened closely, she could catch the sarcasm in his voice.
He stood up, turned around, and stepped closer to her. "Ms. Sullivan, you're really not picky! Better keep it under wraps! Don't let it get out and embarrass me!" He said, leaning in.
With his words out in the open, if Daphne still didn't get it, she'd be a fool.
She never imagined Lewis would see her this way, thinking she secured the collaboration with her body!
At that moment, Daphne felt a rush of blood, glaring at Lewis with indignation.
It felt like her heart was being squeezed by a giant hand, making it hard to breathe.
"Mr. Anderson! How can you think of me like that?" Daphne shot back, her eyes locked on his.
Lewis sneered, his eyes filled with undisguised mockery. "It's the truth! Ms. Sullivan, are you anxious because you've been exposed?"
Faced with his disdain and insult, Daphne's eyes reddened slightly, and a wave of grievance surged.
She lowered her head, biting her lower lip tightly, her mind racing.
The more Daphne acted this way, the more certain Lewis was that there was something unspeakable between her and Patrick.
with a loud snap, the pen in his hand broke in two, his dark eyes colder than the night.
Daphne's thoughts drifted back to when they first met. It felt like a lifetime ago.
She never thought such hurtful words could come from Lewis's mouth.
What was she hoping for? The more she thought about it, the more ironic it seemed.
"Nothing to say? If that's the case, then you can leave now." Lewis said coldly, not looking at her.
Instantly, the sound of typing resumed in the office.
Daphne took a deep breath and thought about going abroad. Maybe now was a good time to leave.
She looked up, her expression calm as she gazed at Lewis. "Mr. Anderson, since the collaboration is over, I don't think I need to stay any longer."
Saying those words, claiming not to be hurt was a lie. But more than anything, she felt disappointed in Lewis.
After being by his side for years, in the end...
She felt like her sincere heart had been wasted.
'Is it worth it?' Daphne asked herself, but no one answered. Since she was leaving, she had to leave cleanly to avoid disputes. Suddenly, she remembered the resignation letter tucked in the file she was holding.
Composing herself, she took it out and walked heavily to the desk.
Under Lewis's cold gaze, she placed the resignation letter on the desk.
"Mr. Anderson, please approve my resignation." Daphne straightened her back and said firmly.
