Chapter 6 Suspicion

As soon as she said it, Lewis shot Daphne a look with those deep, unreadable eyes of his.

The office air felt like it froze, and the two of them were at a loss for words.

Who knew how long they stayed like that, but then the door creaked open, breaking the silence.

Emily walked in, her eyes sparkling as she glanced around. "Sorry to interrupt," she said softly, but she didn't move an inch after stepping inside.

Daphne's eyes landed on the thermos box Emily was holding, and her expression darkened.

Emily, acting like she just noticed the tension, furrowed her brows with a hint of worry. "Ms. Sullivan, Lewis, what's going on? Are you two fighting?"

Her voice got softer, and she nervously clutched her collar, looking so helpless it almost made you feel sorry for her.

Lewis stared at Emily with a blank expression, his eyes now cold as ice, making her shiver.

But Emily didn't back down. She gave Lewis a gentle smile, her eyes full of affection.

After a moment, Lewis looked down and asked coldly, "What do you want?"

Emily placed the thermos box on the desk with a sweet smile. "Lewis, I made this food just for you. Hope you like it."

She opened the thermos box and laid out the dishes, each one smelling amazing, showing how much effort she put into them.

While Emily busied herself, Daphne stood off to the side, feeling like she was invisible.

Watching this, a wave of bitterness washed over her, and she clenched her fists without realizing it.

She thought to herself, 'Daphne, what right do you have to be jealous? You're leaving soon!' Her long eyelashes hid the unwillingness in her eyes.

Lewis glanced at the food on the table, his face showing no emotion.

"Oh, and Lewis, I have this project proposal. I want to discuss a collaboration with you."

Emily's voice was full of hope, her eyes shining like stars under the light.

Her heart raced, feeling inexplicably nervous as she waited for his response.

Based on what she overheard earlier, he should need this project proposal right now.

Lewis picked up the proposal, glanced at it, then tossed it back in front of her, giving her a cold look. "I don't need it."

Emily's breath caught, her blood turning to ice and her legs feeling heavy.

She never expected Lewis to embarrass her in public again. Her lips moved slightly, but she couldn't find the words.

Her face went pale. She held back the bitterness, her voice trembling slightly, and looked at him with hurt in her eyes. "Lewis, I worked on this for several nights..."

"Enough!" Lewis snapped, his eyes blazing with anger.

He pressed a button on the desk, and soon, hurried footsteps approached from outside.

A bodyguard in a suit walked in and respectfully greeted Lewis.

"Escort Miss Garcia out," Lewis ordered coldly.

His words hit Emily like a punch to the gut. She looked at him with tearful eyes, but Lewis didn't even glance her way. The bodyguard walked up to Emily and gestured, "Miss Garcia, please leave."

Despite not wanting to go, she knew she couldn't stay after what had been said, so she gave Lewis one last longing look, bit her lip, and left.

For some reason, seeing this, Daphne felt a bit of schadenfreude. Her dark thoughts made her feel ashamed, even ridiculous.

After everyone left, the large office was just Lewis and Daphne.

There was silence for a while.

Then, Lewis picked up the resignation agreement on the desk, tore it up in front of Daphne, crumpled it into a ball, and tossed it into the trash can.

Daphne's eyes widened, and she asked calmly, "Mr. Anderson, what do you mean?"

Lewis's gaze lingered on her for a moment, his face slightly darkened. "You can resign, but you need to wait for an investigation. After all, you have close contact with our clients, and I have enough reason to suspect you leaked company secrets!" His tone was firm.

He leaned back in his chair, his deep eyes fixed on her.

Hearing this, Daphne closed her eyes, her lips trembling, but decided it was unnecessary to explain and gradually calmed down.

All the words she wanted to say finally turned into a simple "Fine." She took a step back and looked at him with a calm expression. "I'll be going now," she said, then turned around and left.

As the door closed, Lewis punched the desk heavily, a flash of anger in his eyes.

After Daphne came out, she leaned against the wall, her whole body exuding undeniable weariness.

Suddenly, the sound of high heels clicking approached. Daphne opened her eyes slightly and looked up, meeting Lally's worried gaze.

Seeing Daphne in this state, Lally hurried over to support her, asking softly, "Ms. Sullivan, are you okay?"

Daphne pulled her hand away and waved, "I'm fine, I just didn't sleep well last night. You go ahead."

Lally looked back every few steps, only feeling relieved when Daphne's figure disappeared.

Daphne walked to the office door, grasped the handle, and gently pushed it open. As she stepped inside, she immediately saw Emily huddled in a corner, sobbing.

Daphne's brows furrowed unconsciously. She walked lightly over to Emily and saw that she was indeed crying. She pulled out a tissue and handed it to her. "Miss Garcia, why are you crying here?" she asked softly, sitting down beside Emily.

"I..." Emily seemed to think of something sad and started crying even harder, her tears falling like broken beads onto the floor.

Daphne gently wiped away her tears and spoke to her in a soothing voice, "Don't cry. You can talk to me about anything." She guessed, 'Could it be because Lewis rejected her proposal? Or perhaps...

A woman's thoughts were as elusive as a needle in a haystack, truly hard to guess, and she couldn't understand why Emily was crying in her office.

After crying for a while, Emily finally choked out, "Lewis... I suspect he has another woman by his side!"
