Chapter 2

"The Demon King would be getting a new pet in a few days," Luella announced. "And I heard he wants a werewolf with no mate."

As the news sank into my mind, my heart began to beat fast and my hands shook profusely.

I was one of the few werewolves with no mate.

"A-are you serious about this?" My voice cracked so many times.

Luella nodded. "I heard the news from my dad. I hope you get your mate today, Karen."

"I told you not to tell her the news, Luella," Emma said.

She could sense the fear in my eyes; she must feel sorry for me.

"I am sure you will find your mate today," Emma assured me.

I nodded slightly. I could tell that Emma was trying to make me feel less worried; I was also trying my best to feel assured that I would not end up as a pet to the Demon King, but I couldn't.

If I don't find my mate, I might become a pet to the Demon King. How am I supposed to feel assured?

The ringing of the bell jolted me out of my thoughts and I blinked slightly.

"We should head to class," Emma said. "Happy birthday, Karen. We almost forgot to tell you that."

"Happy eighteenth birthday, Karen," Luella said with a smile.

"Thank you, girls," I answered.

As we found our way to the class, I was lost in my thoughts. My steps slowed down, and I couldn't stop thinking about the Demon King. I have heard a lot about him but haven't seen or met with him before.

We walked past some groups of girls heading to their classes. They were talking about the Demon King getting a new pet, which made my heart skip a beat.

What if I become the Demon King's pet? I thought. What would living with him be like?

I wished there was someone I knew who had met with him before; I don't think anyone from my pack has, but they all know the story of how ruthless he is. There was also news that he was cursed and turned into a monster at every full moon.

I have also heard the story of how his pets never last a day with him. There was never news of anyone who became his pet, and a lot of people assumed he always killed them.

My heart began to beat very fast.

Who is this Demon King, and how ruthless can he be?

I wiped the sweat that had gathered in my temple and quickly said a short prayer to the moon goddess, hoping she would give me a mate and change my fate of becoming a pet to the Demon King.

Someone bumped into me, bringing me to a stop. In front of me stood a young boy about my age. He had beautiful blue eyes that sparkled with excitement. I got lost staring at him as I felt a surge of excitement run down my spine; I could feel an intense tingling sensation; the one associated with meeting a mate.

My wolf, who was usually quiet, jumped in joy, feeling so excited.

"Mate!" My wolf growled.

"Mate?!" He mumbled too, and that made me blink slightly.

He had just confirmed being my mate. The thought of being free from being a pet candidate for the Demon King anymore, made me smile.

I waited for him to speak but when he said nothing. I decided to speak up.

"You're my mate," I said, blushing slightly.

"I..."

"Damien, can we go now?" A boy called after him.

"I am so sorry, I have to leave now," he answered.

"Can we..."

He left before I could finish up my sentence; I groaned.

How am I supposed to see him again?

"Karen, hasten your steps," Luella called after me.

I nodded quickly and quickened my steps. We got to our homeroom and I found my way to my seat. The class was noisy; everyone had a thing or two to say. They were all talking about the Demon King and who would be unfortunate enough to be his pet.

I wasn't bothered about the conversation since it no longer had anything to do with me. I brought out my headphones and decided to listen to music. I was lost in my music until Luella tapped me slightly. I pulled off my headphones and stared at her.

"Is there a problem?"

"Look?" She pointed.

In front of the class was our homeroom teacher, Mr. Spooner, and a boy. I blinked. It was Damien, my mate. I could feel my wolf jumping up in joy and screaming mate; I smiled.

"Why are you smiling?" Luella whispered.

"It's nothing," I whispered back.

"Silence, Karen!" Mr. Spooner said almost in a yell.

"I am so sorry, sir," I said quickly.

He gave me a warning look before going on to introduce the boy in front of us.

"This is Damien Austin. He is the son of the new Lycan King..."

Lycan King? Would I become the Lycan Queen?

I could hardly listen to the rest of Mr. Spooner's introduction because I had a lot going on in my mind. I did not know when he left either.

Luella hit me slightly, jolting me out of my thoughts. "What?" I mumbled.

"Are you not leaving for biology class?"

I furrowed my brows. Is it over already?

I noticed the class was almost empty. I stood up quickly.

"I am so sorry."

"What have you been thinking about? You seem lost in thought."

I wasn't ready to tell Luella that the new boy was my mate; we hadn't spoken about it yet.

"Where is Emma?"

"She left already."

I sighed. "Then we had better leave too."

"Are you trying to avoid my question?"

I ignored Luella's question and headed out quickly. A hand pulled me to the side and I almost lost my balance.

"Who the hell is..."

Damien stared at me; I did not realize he was the one holding me.

"I am so sorry. I did not mean to pull you that way."

He seems to be a nice guy. I thought. I am lucky to have him as my mate.

"You don't have to be sorry. I..."

He sighed. "You know who I am right?"

I furrowed my brows. Am I not supposed to know him?

"Of course I do. You are the new student Mr. Spooner..."

He shook his head. "Not that."

"Am I supposed to know you differently?"

He groaned. "You don't know I am your mate?"

I blushed slightly. "I know."

"Well, I am rejecting you," he said and my heart skipped a beat.

W-what?
