Chapter 2
I was surprised by what I just heard. I expected it to be a company owned by billionaires, and I didn't know that an Alpha was the one who…
Oh no. Goddess, let this not be a company owned by a pack.
Lost in deep thoughts, I heard a little growl, and I raised my head instantly, freezing on the spot.
"You heard it clearly, right?" The young guy named Jace said.
I nodded, clearing my throat a little, trying to shake off the anxiety that was already building up in me. My body was beginning to heat up, and I didn't expect that just realizing the deadly truth of an Alpha owning the company would make me anxious. I didn't like this.
I looked at the receptionist. Her eyes seemed dull, though a little bit wider than it was earlier, and I was sure she was terrified.
"But, Jace, she isn't the first person to come," she said. "Look, there are many other people here for the job before her." It seemed like she understood the assignment. Her eyes rolled at the other ladies and gentlemen on the bench at the extreme end of the floor.
"I don't care. The Alpha says that I should call the first person I see. Come, now, or forget the job," he said, rolling his eyes at me. He didn't seem to look at the other people, and his attitude just made me a bit more nervous.
He turned around, heading towards a door that seemed like the so-called Alpha's, and I quickly did my hair with my palms, and wiped my face. I took a deep breath, before walking behind him.
He entered the office, and no one needed to tell me to stop at the door, else I'd face a death glare. Better to not do what you're not told. I waited for a few seconds. I could see a little bit of his figure through the widely open door.
"Alpha, she is the first one," I could hear him say.
He walked out of the office, and as his eyes met mine, I stood up straight.
"Come in," he said, almost sounding like a command. Well, maybe it was. I let out a breath and nodded.
I walked into the office, and he walked behind me to the door. He wasn't gone totally, but it felt like he had just escaped, leaving me alone with the Alpha, and I stared as he walked to the door of the office, before turning around to see the Alpha.
That was when it hit me. I could feel the aura in the air, domineering and presiding, I could feel it wrapping around me and I didn't know why my mind was interpreting it the way it was. Something made me feel anxious, as a sudden cold enveloped me. I knew that it was his Alpha power taking control. Then, I could confirm that he was truly an Alpha.
He was going through some documents on the table, not seeming to regard my presence, or maybe he didn't even notice I was there. He had dark brown hair that ran to the back of his head in a sleek manner, and some falling on his forehead, almost extending to his brows. I could see the sharp jawlines, complementing his seemingly perfect face.
What was going on here, I asked myself.
He raised his head, and I froze. I stared into his deep hazel eyes. A strong scent emitted from him. I couldn't tell if it was cologne or a normal wolf scent, but this was something different - a scent more pungent I could already tell he was a strong Alpha. I wondered what pack he presided over.
His eyes turned murky the moment his gaze fell on me, and it rapidly ignited the fear in me again. I didn't look for long, but I saw his eyes flicker amber, before returning to normal. My gaze fell to the ground, as I was unable to stand looking him in the eye. I could detect weird motions, and he growled a little bit. I couldn't tell what was happening, but it all died down into quietness several seconds after.
"Sit," he said, nodding towards the chair beside me. It took a while before I got the confidence to sit. I don't really understand what happened. Today was full of surprises. I realized an Alpha owned the company, and then, when I met him, he was behaving strangely. I hope he didn't want to devour me. It was some strange intense atmosphere, and the tough vibe he was giving off, and it was enough to make it an oddly sensational moment.
"Thanks," I said with a low tone. I managed to raise my head, and I watched him gazing closely.
"Your name?" He asked.
"Serena," I replied almost instantly, as if I was expecting the question, when it was really the fear that was acting in me. "Serena Carlton," I added.
He cleared his throat. “How old are you?” He asked.
“Twenty-two,” I instantly replied. It was weird staring at him straight in the eye, and it felt worse every time he gazed at me after going through the documents momentarily. It somehow made my skin crawl.
This was hell of an experience.
“Pretty young,” he mouthed out. I didn't know what that was supposed to mean, but I'd take it as a compliment.
“Yeah.” I muttered. I didn't know what to say at that point, and it just felt a little bit awkward. I didn't know if it was his weird aura, or his strange behavior or his suspicious facial expressions, everything just weaved and streaked together to make it feel weird around the Alpha.
“Can I have your CV?” He asked, staring at me deeply, his gaze almost making me crumple to the ground.
“Yes,” I replied, dipping my hands into my bag, and retrieving it. Thank goodness the file was able to fit in it without shrinking. I didn't want to be seen carrying a sack on my shoulders.
He took it, and checked every paper in it. I lowered my head, praying that he would be pleased, and then, when I raised it up to look at him, he put it aside.
What was he doing? Was he going to send me away? My heart beat faster. He didn't even read anything, but he just put it away. It was as if he wasn't impressed at all.
He looked at me, a strong connection between us, as I dared not to look away.
“I'm done with that. I assume that's not all I need to check,” he stated. “I need more information about you,” he said.
What else? He had all the formal information about me? Did he want to delve deeper?
“Eh?” I found the word coming out not as I intended.
“I need to know about your personal life, and of course, your background. So, tell me, what work experience do you have?” He asked.
Wait. It was written in my details that I didn't have any. What was he trying to prove? Making me feel bitter?
“I just got out of college,” I replied without delay. “It's actually my first job, and I want to put everything I have and dedicate it to this job,” I said.
A smile crossed his lips. “Okay. How about…” he paused, cocking a brow. “Your background?”
“I come from a small family. My guardian's are my parents, my father and a stepmother,” I answered.
His expression suddenly darkened. Did I give an unsatisfactory answer?
“I don't care about that, girl. I am an Alpha, and I need to know who I employ here. This is a bloody city, and I won't let a spy come in here,” he said.
What was he implying? That I was a spy? I tried to say something in defense, but the next question he asked triggered my anxiety.
“Tell me, young lady,” he said, looking intensely at me. I assumed he was using his Alpha power to be able to make me not look away. “What pack are you from?”
Oh my! My pack! Alpha Pedro was a bloody bastard who had so many rivals. What would I say my pack is? Definitely, I can't lie to him.
Goddess, help me.
