Chapter 4
Matthew Hussey leaned back in his executive half a million dollar chair, rolling and cackling to himself. He had done well. He was sure Adam would cave in and Veronica would eventually admit to herself that he picked the right man for her.
Laughing louder, he spinned in his chair, wondering if he needed to have a degree in matchmaking if he eventually retired from business. After all, he had to have something to keep his mind off boredom when his plans eventually worked as he hoped he would.
He could already see the grandchildren from Adam and Veronica round his living room and bringing the fun he wanted into his life. He snorted at Veronica's stubbornness and anger that he had dared to bring a guy into her life.
He knew she would eventually see that he was right in the decision he made for her. He knew the types of guys he went for and Adam more than fit into her specifications. If she was wise, she should thank him instead of getting mad at him. She should thank him for choosing people better than her exes.
Matthew shuddered, gritting his teeth in a tight smile, disgust running through him as he thought of the exes of his daughter.
Veronica had always been ambitious and wasn't someone who was really serious about settling down or getting serious with a man. He guessed that was her reason for always dating guys who gave him sudden shudders whenever he thought of them and increased his blood pressure. He knew he had to do something if he wanted a son-in-law and grandkids through Veronica as he had hoped and had been glad when he saw an opportunity to make Adam family.
At thirty, Adam had a body to die for. The muscles ripping through his suits told Matthew how healthy and athletic he was and he was already praising himself on how good the genes of his future grandchildren would be. He had already pictured how Veronica's heart was going to be melted and was going to fall on her face and thank him for bringing to her an angel with cute curly brown hair, brown eyes that someone could drown in and s handsome face she would never get tired of looking at.
He hissed, that naughty and spoilt brat. She had even appreciated as he had anticipated and almost chewed his head off. He shook his head, that girl drove him crazy ar times.
His intercom rang and he picked it up. "Yes?" He said into the phone.
Sally, his secretary, smiled into the phone. "Sir, you have a visitor."
"Who is that? Send them in."
"I have not seen the person before and that is why I am informing you."
He smiled. "As usual, you are smart and always look out for me." He teased her.
She laughed. "I am being paid handsomely well to do my job."
He chuckled. "Don't tell me you are doing it for the money." He affected a hurt tone. "For a moment, I thought you were actually concerned about me."
She laughed, not oblivious to his funny remarks at times. "Not all that, sir."
"Okay, who is this person?" He asked. He could already picture the person rolling eyes at her as they chatted if the person was as impatient as him.
"He says he is Bruce."
"Bruce?" The name didn't ring a bell in his head.
"You know the man who was here some days ago? The one you tried to matchmake with Miss Hussey."
"Oh!" He cracked out loud. "You mean Adam? Let Adam in, that's one familiar face you are going to have to get used to." He chuckled. "And you said you have never seen him."
"This man is Bruce, not Adam. He says he is Adam's bodyguard." She explained.
He frowned. Bodyguard? He guessed he was not as wretched as he had thought the man was if he could still afford a bodyguard. He smiled, a pleased smile teasing the edge of his face. He was not marrying his daughter off to a complete gold digger. Adam would still have enough change with him to impress and woo her without him feeling the need to help him out or him having to hear a sob story of how he was completely broke and couldn't afford much in wooing his daughter as he had instructed because he had no money and she had incredibly expensive taste.
He smiled. Money wouldn't be a problem. Adam just had to up his game and lay the charms thickly on his daughter which he was sure he should be able to do. He had heard stories of how he used to melt the hearts of girls in his college days and even high school. Even if Veronica was a woman with a cold heart, which he knew his daughter was, he should be able to act like a man and the man that he was and win her over.
"Sir?" Sally called out to him.
He started, forgetting she was still on phone. "Oh, I am sorry. Let him in. We shouldn't keep the associates of my future son-in-law waiting, should we?"
She chuckled. "Yes, sir." She dropped the phone.
She turned to Bruce. "He said you can come in, sir."
Bruce grunted as he stood up from where he was seated. "Thank you." He muttered, dusting off his cloth and moved. Slightly rapping on the door with his hardened knuckles, he waited for a response and walked in.
Matthew relaxed in his chair as the bodyguard walked in. He noted his heavy build and how strong he seemed. He hid a smile as he glanced at the several tattoos screaming at him on the man's body.
He was surprised though that the man was older than Adam. He had expected a younger version of Adam as his bodyguard. Young, handsome but good looking.
He waved at Bruce to settle into the seat opposite him. With a slight bow of the head, he did, filling up ghe whole seat as he sat and looked at him, no intimidation in his eyes and ready for anything.
Matthew laughed. Of course, if he was a guy as built and strong as he was and had spent years flipping off people off their feet and breaking their bones, he wouldn't be easily intimidated by an old man like him who spent years bullying people off with words alone and couldn't hold his own down in a battle.
"I see. She said you are Adam's bodyguard." Matthew said, staring at Bruce.
"And his personal assistant." Bruce added, without breaking off the stare.
Personal assistant? He chuckled. There was really no end to how surprising his son-in-law was. He nodded at Bruce. "Okay. Why are you here?"
"Adam sent me."
"Why?"
"He is not opting out of this, is he?"
Bruce shook his head. "He is not though I think he should and understand why he isn't as well. He has endured a lot of troubles from your daughter in the past two days."
Bruce placed a hand on his chin, stroking it as he looked thoughtfully at Bruce. "And you think she is more trouble than she is worth."
"I didn't say that." Bruce said without flinching. "I must ask though why you think you have to place him on this kind of condition. You are his last hope and yet you want to stress and squeeze him dry before you do anything." Bruce scolded.
"What is your story?" Matthew asked.
Bruce frowned. "What?"
"You are much older than Adam and I am sure you have a lot of responsibility than he can solve now. Why do you still stay with him and you also have two job description? Personal assistant and head of security, that must be one hard career profile to keep up with."
Bruce chuckled. "Not that hard when you love your boss."
"Really?" Matthew raised his eyebrows in disbelief.
Bruce nodded. "I have been working for Adam's father before I started working for the son. I know what kind of a great guy he is because I know how great his family was. I can feel his pain of trying to not let the family fortune and good name go to rot and it breaks my heart to see him suffer over your daughter because of the deal he had with you." He scowled. "Can't you just help him without attaching a weird condition as this to it? I doubt Veronica would yield and my boy is going through enough as it is."
My boy? Matthew chuckled. That was interesting. It must be nice to have loyal people who are ready to face fire for you. Adam was truly one lucky dude. He leaned forward, folding his hands over each other and placing them on the desk. He stared at Bruce, his face void of teasing emotions. "Would you believe me if I say I am not proposing this deal with Adam because I want to stress him with my money but because I want him to actually be my son-in-law because I also noticed how great he is?"
Bruce swallowed, shaking his head. "I wouldn't believe that."
Matthew sighed and leaned back into his seat. "Did he send you here to do this? To plead on his behalf?"
Bruce shook his head. "Not at all. Adam is determined to win her and save his business."
"Good." Matthew nodded. "Then why are you here?"
"He told me to get the address of Veronica."
"Why?" Matthew frowned.
"Your daughter is in danger. I have some men at the place she is and they contacted me as soon as she got there as I have told people to be on the watch for her. Adam is on his way where she is and plans to take her home but he needs to know where she lives."
Matthew jolted in his seat and forced himself to calm down. Adam wouldn't let Veronica to be hurt and Bruce wouldn't let Adam to be hurt. He looked at Bruce again and knew they were all safe and he had nothing to worry about.
"You could have called me. He has my number."
"He told me to do that but I wouldn't get to say all what I said to you over the phone if I had done that." Bruce said.
Matthew laughed. He scribbled the address on a piece of paper and handed it to him. "We should talk another time, man. You are good company for an old man like me."
Bruce chuckled, stood up and took his leave. Matthew felt more certain he had done the best thing for his daughter as he watched Bruce walk away. Adam and Veronica would definitely make a good couple.
